Bring a bit of brightness to your morning with this cute Sunflower Coaster Crochet Pattern. Despite its intricate look, this crochet sunflower coaster is fairly simple to make!

    Finished crochet sunflower coaster.

Sunflowers are one of my husband's favorite flowers, so adding crochet sunflowers around the house is a great way to keep him happy when I "accidentally" buy too much yarn. I promise it's for more crochet sunflower patterns winks. Does he believe me? Not really, but as long as I keep my yarn organized, he doesn't seem to mind.

For me, crocheting coasters is a great way to add simple, easy decorations around the house for holidays and seasons. But truth be told, the crochet sunflower coaster set might stay on our coffee table all year round.

Well, these and the crochet capybara coasters and maybe the crochet strawberry coasters too—honestly, we have so many favorites that we keep crochet coasters in every room of the house.

My husband isn't the only sunflower lover in our home! I also love them, and I am slowly working on creating many sunflower patterns. So far, I have a Sunflower Crochet Blanket, a sunflower crochet bag, and a sunflower crochet pillow.... to say we are sunflower obsessed is to put it mildly.

    So, let's get started!

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Type: I used cotton yarn for this sunflower coaster crochet pattern. I only recommend cotton if you're making a coaster, as it absorbs liquid well. Acrylic does not, so if you opt for acrylic, consider using your sunflower coaster as an applique or a decorative doily instead.
    2. Yarn Weight: Stick to worsted weight or lighter yarn when making the sunflower coaster crochet pattern. Bulky yarns can make the sunflower coaster unstable.
    3. Finished Size: The completed sunflower coaster is approximately 5 inches in diameter.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Lily Sugar n Cream yellow cotton yarn
    • Lily Sugar n Cream brown cotton yarn
    • 5mm crochet hook
    • Tapestry needle

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring - mr
    • Chain - ch
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Slip Stitch - sl st
    • Increase - inc (will be marked as a dc inc (2 dc in one stitch) or sc inc (2 sc in 1 stitch))

    * If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

🍵Instructions for Sunflower Coaster Crochet Pattern

This sunflower coaster crochet pattern is made using rounds not rows.

Double crochet first round of the crochet sunflower coaster brown center.

Round 1: With the brown yarn, make a mr then immediately ch x2 and dc x11 into the ring. Then sl st to the top ch, this now counts as a dc (12).

Double crochet second round of the crochet sunflower coaster brown center.

Round 2: Ch x2, dc into the same place you made the chains. Then dc inc x11. Sl st to the top of the beginning chs to finish the round (24).

Double crochet third round of the crochet sunflower coaster brown center.

Round 3: Ch x2, dc into the same place you made the chains. Then make a dc in the next stitch. Repeat making a dc inc, and then a dc in the next stitch for the rest of the round (36). Sl st to the beginning of the chains and fasten off the yarn.

Start of the first round of sunflower petals.

Round 4: Join the yellow yarn anywhere on the edge and make a ch. Sc into the same stitch. Then immediately after *ch x4, sc inc into the next stitch, skip the next stitch and make a sc inc in the following stitch.

First round of the sunflower petals is complete.

Repeat from * for the rest of the round. Have the last stitches be a sc inc and a skipped stitch. Sl st to the first chain you made at the beginning.

Crocheting one half of the sunflower petal.

Round 5: Do not make any starting chains, instead *dc x4 into the ch-4 space you made in the previous row.

Chain 3 to do the picot stitch.

Then make a picot stitch at the top by chaining 3 and slip stitching it the third chain from your hook.

Slip stitch to do the picot stitch.

Finish the other half of the crochet petal.

After that, make 4 more dc stitches on the other side of the ch space.

Slip stitch to anchor the crochet sunflower petal.

Then make a sl st in between the sc inc stitches right where you skipped a stitch in the previous row.

2 crochet sunflower petals are done.

You just completed your first petal. Repeat from * onwards. Then when the round is finished, fasten off the yarn and weave in any ends.

Now you've finished my sunflower coaster crochet pattern! Didn't I tell you it was an easy project?

If you have any extra brown cotton yarn left over, you can try making my crochet bear coaster pattern. You'll also need a lighter brown, but it mostly uses dark brown yarn.

If you have extra yellow yarn leftover plus a little bit of white yarn, then you can make my crochet daisy coaster pattern and my crochet flower coaster pattern with 6 petals.

Alternatively, I do have a crochet apple coaster pattern and a crochet pumpkin coaster pattern if you're looking for more fall-themed designs.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Petal Overlap: The petals might overlap slightly, but this makes the flower look fuller. As long as the middle section lays flat, it will work well as a coaster since that's where the cup sits.
    • Keeping Yarn Tidy: When changing colors, make sure to weave in your ends neatly. This prevents them from unraveling and keeps your coaster looking clean.
    • Blocking Your Coaster: For an even finish, consider blocking your coasters after crocheting. Gently wet the coasters, shape them, and let them dry. This helps to set the stitches and keep the coaster flat.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

What if I didn’t use cotton for the crochet coaster?

No problem! While cotton is best for absorption, using a different yarn can still make for a great decorative piece. Consider using it for blankets, cardigans, or other projects.

Can I glue a non-slip backing to the back of the crochet sunflower, so it doesn’t slide around?

It isn’t necessary to do so, but if you feel like it would help your crochet sunflower coasters from slipping around on your desk give it a shot!

Can I use any yarn besides cotton for the crochet coasters?

Wool is a good alternative since it is heat resistant, water absorbent, and antimicrobial. But cotton is still best in my opinion.

I think round 3 is confusing. If I dcinc all the way around 24 stitches, I will end up with 48 stitches, not the 36 as stated. Then there are too many petals. Is the correct pattern Chain 2, dc in same stitch, dcinc, dc, dcinc around?

Each round for the middle of the sunflower increases by 12 stitches. Rnd 1 is 12 dc stitches, rnd 2 is made from dc inc in every stitch which is 24 stitches, then rnd 3 is a single dc stitch followed by a dc inc making the 3rd round 36. I don't necessarily dc in the same stitch after chaining 2 because I don't treat the chains as a stitch and skip over them to slip stitch to the first dc stitch in the round. If you choose to count the chains as a dc stitch and dc in the same stitch - that would be your dc increase, in the next stitch make only 1 dc. As long as you have 36 stitches at the end of the 3rd round you are ready for making the petals. Hope this helps!
