Say goodbye to summer and hello to fall with my Crochet Sunflower Pillow Pattern that is free and easy to make! And the texture of the crochet flower pillow middle is fun to run your hands over!
Did you know that sunflowers move their heads to follow the sun? In the morning they will face the east and by nightfall they will face west. It is only when their heads get too heavy from the sunflower seeds that they stop switching directions and permanently face east.
Last year I grew sunflowers to test this theory out and it was at least true for me!
My husband and I love sunflowers. In fact we can probably place them both in our top 3 favorite flowers. Earlier this year I made Crochet Sunflower Coasters for my husband to use at his gaming desk, and now that we moved into a new apartment I wanted to brighten the place up with a few flowers, like my Crochet Daisy Coasters, but I wanted more!
In this case a large crochet flower pillow that looks like a sunflower! It's close to 18 inches in diameter and makes for a great crochet support pillow. And it's a cute crochet throw pillow when it's not in use. And can we talk about the texture? It’s pure bliss if you like running your hands over highly textured things!
The crochet bobble pillow part of the crochet sunflower pillow tutorial looks complicated, but I can reassure you that it is not. It is super easy once you learn how to make a bobble stitch.
If you are looking to practice making bobble stitches in a row before attempting to learn them in the round, that is fine, and you can use my Crochet Sheep Pattern to help.

✏️ Things To Note:
- The crochet sunflower cushion is made with worsted weight yarn, but you can use any weight yarn to create the pattern. Just now that dk and smaller yarns can result in a smaller pillow and bulky yarns will make the pillow even larger. Remember to switch your hook size if you are switching the yarn size.
- The crochet sunflower petals are individually sewn on. You could probably get away with crocheting them on if you were wanting to avoid sewing anything and make this a no sew crochet pattern.
- The finished size for this crochet decorative pillow is 18 inches give or take your yarn tension, yarn and hook size.
💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)
- Magic ring - mr
- Chain - ch
- Single crochet - sc
- Increase - inc
- Decrease - dec
- Bobble stitch - a special stitch to know but no abbreviations will be given
🍵Instructions for Crochet Sunflower Pillow Pattern
How to crochet a sunflower pillow:
This pattern is made in rounds.
Round 1: Using the brown yarn, make a mr and sc x6 into it. Then join the 1st stitch to the last with a slip stitch.
Round 2: Make a sc in the next stitch. Then in the same stitch make a bobble stitch*.
*A bobble stitch is made by yarning over, inserting the hook into the stitch, yarn over, draw loop back through stitch, yarn over pull through 2 loops then STOP. You will have a half-completed dc hanging from your hook. Repeat the steps 3 more times until you have 4 half completed dc stitches hanging from your hook and 5 loops ON your hook. Then yarn over and pull through all 5 loops. *
Bobble stitches are usually made with 4 or 5 half completed dc stitches so you can choose either one just make sure to keep it consistent for the project.
You want to continue making a sc and bobble stitch in every stitch for this round. You should end with 6 sc and 6 bobble stitches for round 2 (12). Then sl st to the 1st sc you made in the round.
Round 3: This round is just single crochets, we need to create some distance in between bobble rows so they won’t be too constricted.
Sc inc in every stitch (24). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.
Round 4: Sc in the same stitch as the join, then make a bobble stitch in the NEXT stitch. Then make a sc in the following stitch. Each previous round stitch gets only 1 stitch in it this round, instead of 2 like we did in round 2.
Keep repeating and alternating sc and bobble stitches for the rest of the round (24). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.
You should have 12 bobble stitches.
Round 5: Sc inc, sc, then repeat for the rest of the round (36). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.
Round 6: Repeat round 4, but you’ll end up with 6 more bobbles than the last round (36). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.
Round 7: Sc inc, sc x2, then repeat for the rest of the round (48). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Stuff the petal but try to push the stuffing to the sides so that way you can sew a line in the middle of the petal. Take your needle and yarn and weave your needle in and out of both sides of the middle of the petal. Do this for 10-12 rows then snake it back to the opening. Add more stuffing if needed.
Make 12 petals.
Crochet Sunflower Assembly:
With the bobbles sides facing out, sc the 2 brown circles together.
Stuff with polyfill when you are almost done single crocheting the 2 circles together.
Sew your sunflower petals onto the sunflower edge, you can sew them directly to the crochet edge you just made, or to the sc round before that on both sides, it's up to you. Make sure that each crochet petal only takes up 8 crochet stitch places because 96/12 = 8. This will allow the crochet flower pillow to look the most uniform when it's completed.
After all the crochet sunflower petals have been attached, weave in any ends that may be poking out.
And now you have a finished sunflower crochet pattern made from my crochet sunflower pillow pattern! I hope you have enjoyed the free crochet sunflower pattern!

🐌Expert Tips
Count the stitches you are sewing into when you are sewing on a petal. You should be only using 8 crochet stitch spaces. This will make the crochet sunflower pillow pattern more uniform as a finished project.
🧵Pattern FAQs
Yes! Just make sure you change the hook size you are using so it matches the corresponding yarn size. Changing the type of yarn and hook size ultimately change the size of the pillow.
Absolutely, any type of yarn is okay to use. Cotton, wool, acrylic, bamboo - just pick your favorite!
You can use cotton polyfill instead of the synthetic kind I use, or yarn scraps, fabric scraps, even a tiny 12" round pillow for the middle so you can crochet the middle around it and use little polyfill or alternatives for the petals.
