My Crochet Cactus Coaster Pattern is looking sharp! But I promise these cactus coasters won’t hurt when you touch them.
I have a friend who is obsessed with all things cactus, including succulents. She grew up in Arizona, and with her birthday coming up, I decided to make her a pair of crochet cactus coasters to remind her of home.
Her favorite type of cactus is the saguaro, which inspired the design of my crochet coaster set. You can see this in the offset little arms on each side of the cactus coasters—so cute!
If you enjoy my cactus coaster pattern and want to create more cactus-themed projects, I also offer a Crochet Cactus Pillow Pattern with Flower, which is round, and a more saguaro-inspired Crochet Cactus Pattern that can be used as decorative pillows.
And if you have leftover green cotton yarn from making the cactus coasters, you can make my Crochet Frog Coaster Pattern because it uses the same vibrant green from Lily Sugar 'n Cream yarns. If you have another green cotton yarn, you can even make my Crochet Lily Pad Coaster Pattern!

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Choice. Use cotton yarn for the crochet cactus pattern. If you use acrylic yarn, you can turn the coasters into cute cactus appliqués, perfect for blankets and other decorative elements that don't require absorbency.
- Beginner Friendly. This pattern is ideal for beginners because it is worked in the round and consists of only a few rows.
- Size Adjustments. The finished cactus crochet coaster measures roughly 4.5 inches wide. You can adjust the hook size if you want a larger or smaller coaster.

🍵Instructions for Crochet Cactus Coaster Pattern
The crochet cactus coaster pattern is made in curved rows, not rounds.
Row 1: Using the green, ch x11 and then turn (11).
Row 2: In the 3rd chain from the hook make a dc. Dc another 7 more times in the following 7 chains. There should be 1 chain at the top of the chain that has not been worked in yet. For that chain, dc x6 into that one chain space. This will help you round the top so you can work on the other side of the chain.
Then on the other side of the chain, dc 8 times,1 in each chain. (22)
Then ch x2 and flip your work.
Row 3: Dc x8, then in the next 6 stitches make a dc inc (where you make 2 dc in 1 stitch). Then dc x8 along the straight edge. (28)
Then ch x2 and flip your work.
Row 4: Dc x8, then (dc inc, dc) x6. After doing the curved part of the cactus, you want to dc x8 down the straight side again. (34)
Then ch x1 and turn your work.
Row 5: This last round is done mostly in sc and it is to make your edgework look clean as well as make the little cactus arms.
Sc x3, then in the following stitch make a dc, tr x3, and dc in the same stitch. Then in the following stitch make a sc. DO NOT SKIP ANY STITCHES. Sc x4, then (sc inc, sc x2) x6 times.
Now we are going to make the second cactus arm. In the next stitch dc, tr x3, dc in the same stitch like before. Then sc in the next stitch and make 6 more sc along the side of the cactus. Make 2 sc in the bottom corners of the cactus to turn it to the raw edge of the cactus bottom.
Here you want to make 2 single crochet stitches for each double crochet or 2 chains that are along the edge (12). Then make sure the corner has 2 single crochet stitches like the previous one, sl st to the first sc stitch in the round and fasten off. Weave in any ends.
Crochet Cactus Flower
The crochet cactus flower pattern is made in 2 rounds.
Round 1: Using the pink yarn, make a magic ring and then sc x 6 inside of it. Then sl st to the first sc in the round and pull the circle tight by pulling on the yarn. (6)
Round 2: Ch x3 and then sl st into the next stitch. Repeat this step 5 more times. After 6 petals completed, fasten off the yarn leaving a tail for sewing.
Finishing:
Sew the pink flower to the top right of the cactus coaster with your pink yarn.
Next, embroider little white V’s over the front of the cactus to give it some little prickles.
Finally, weave in any ends if you haven't done so already.

🐌Expert Tips
- Minimize Back Messiness. If you want the back of the cactus coaster to be neater, slide the yarn underneath the stitches on the back until you reach the next embroidery spot. This will help keep it less noticeable. Just make sure the yarn doesn't show on the front.
- Use a Stitch Marker. When working in rounds, consider using a stitch marker to keep track of your starting point. This can help ensure your coasters have a uniform shape.
- Experiment with Colors. Feel free to experiment with different colors for your coasters. Using a variety of shades can add a fun and vibrant touch to your decor!
🧵Pattern FAQs
The best yarn for crocheting coasters is generally cotton because it is durable, absorbent, holds up well to heat, and is easy to wash.
Crochet coasters tend to curl if there is a variation in tension. Aim to maintain uniform stitch sizes for the best results.
Crochet coasters are just as effective as those made from cork, felt, stone, or other materials found in stores. The distinct advantage of crochet coasters is that they are handmade, offering a wider variety in design.
