A beary cute crochet coaster for any occasion! This Bear Coaster Crochet Pattern can be completed quickly and is irresistibly cute for everyday use.

3 finished crochet bear coasters with cup.

This crochet bear coaster pattern is ideal for beginners who are comfortable with basic crochet stitches. Itโ€™s also great for last-minute gifts, whether for Christmas, housewarmings, baby showers, and more. Plus, these bear tea or coffee coasters are perfect for selling at markets or online as finished products (though the pattern itself is not for resale).

The bear coaster pattern is designed to use cotton yarn, which is essential for making coasters. Cotton is the best choice because it's breathable and absorbent, making it practical for everyday use.

I enjoy working with cotton yarn and have several patterns that feature it, like my Crochet Duck Hat Pattern, Crochet Strawberry Coaster Pattern, and Crochet Spa Set. Cotton is also excellent for projects like summer hats, washcloths, and, of course, coasters because of these beneficial qualities.

If you're interested in other crochet home dรฉcor patterns that use different yarn types, I recommend trying decorative projects like the Crochet Strawberry Pillow Pattern or Crochet Star Garland Pattern.

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Use Cotton Yarn: Cotton yarn is crucial for absorbency. If you prefer acrylic, then use it to create cute bear appliques for blankets and other decorative items where absorbency isnโ€™t needed.
    2. Beginner-Friendly Design: The bear coaster crochet pattern only has 4 rounds, and itโ€™s a great way to learn how to crochet coasters. The design is simple, with the bear features added in the last round.
    3. Adjustable Size: The finished bear coaster crochet pattern is approximately 4.5 inches wide. You can change the hook size to make the coaster bigger or smaller.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - brown
    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - jute
    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - black
    • 4.5mm crochet hook
    • Tapestry needle

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring - mr
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Half double crochet - hdc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Triple crochet - tr
    • Slip stitch - sl st
    • Increase - inc, in this pattern we see it mostly as a "dc inc" which is 2 dc stitches in 1 stitch.

    * The ch x2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Skip over it and sl st to the first dc you made.

    * If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

You can switch the yarn color of the bear to turn the crochet bear coasters into black bears, brown bears, or even polar bears fairly easily.

๐ŸตInstructions for Bear Coaster Crochet Pattern

The crochet bear coaster pattern is made in rounds. I will show you how to crochet a bear for beginners.

Second round of the crochet bear face is done.

Round 1: Using the jute yarn, make a magic ring and ch x2 (does not count as a stitch). Then dc x12 into the magic ring. To secure the round, sl st to the 1st dc in the round (12). Fasten off the jute yarn and switch it to brown yarn.

Round 2: Ch x2, then dc inc in every stitch from the previous round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (24).

Third round of the crochet bear face is done.

Round 3: Ch x2, then dc inc, dc and repeat for the rest of the round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (36).

First ear of the crochet bear face is done.

Round 4: This is the last round for the crochet bear coaster and will help create its overall shape.

Sc, sl st, then we are making the first ear. Skip a stitch and then in 1 stitch: dc, tr x4, and dc. Then skip the next stitch and immediately make a sl st in the following stitch. Sl x5 along the next 5 stitches.

Second ear of the crochet bear face is done.

Then we are going to make another ear.

Skip a stitch and then in 1 stitch:

dc, tr x4, and dc. Then skip the next stitch and immediately make a sl st in the following stitch.

Finished crochet bear face, without the eye and nose details.

After anchoring the ear follow the rest of the round:

Sc, sc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, hdc inc, sc x6, hdc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, sc inc, sl st to 1st sc in the round and fasten off. Then weave in any loose ends.

    Finished crochet bear coaster.

    Embroidery:

Using the black yarn make little eyes on opposite sides of the tan circle (preferably in round 2) and then make an embroidered triangle nose in the top half of the tan circle from round 1. Make sure the embroidery isn't too thick, so the coaster lets cups lay flat and not wobble around.

And now your crochet bear coaster is done! I hope you enjoyed my bear coaster crochet pattern!

If you have leftover cotton yarn, then you can make my Crochet Capybara Coaster Pattern since it uses the same yarn as the crochet bear coaster set.

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Neat Embroidery: To keep the back of the coaster tidy, slide the yarn under stitches when moving between embroidery spots. Make sure the yarn doesnโ€™t show on the front.
    • Use of Starch for Stiffness: For a firmer coaster, lightly spray with starch and press with a warm iron. This will help maintain the shape without losing the coaster's softness.
    • Adjusting Hook Size: If your coaster turns out too tight or too loose, try adjusting your hook size. A smaller hook will tighten stitches, and a larger one will loosen them, giving a slightly different look.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

What is the best crochet yarn for making coasters?

Cotton yarn is durable, absorbent, heat-resistant, and easy to wash, making it ideal for coasters.

Why do my crochet coasters curl?

Curling usually occurs due to uneven tension. Aim for consistent stitch sizes for the best results.

    Are crochet coasters practical?

Yes, they are as functional as store-bought coasters made from cork, felt, or stone. The added advantage of crochet coasters is their handmade touch and variety in designs.

    • And now your crochet bear coaster is done!
    • Tips: If you want the back of the coaster to be less messy from the embroidery, slide the yarn underneath the stitches on the back of the coaster until you get to the next embroidery spot so it is less noticeable on the back. Just make sure the yarn doesn't show on the front.
