Dive into the warmth of sunshine with my Crochet Sunflower Blanket Pattern! This delightful design offers all the charm of traditional granny squares without the hassle of sewing them together. Perfect for cozy evenings or as a thoughtful gift, this blanket will brighten any space!

    Finished sunflower granny square blanket

Check out my unique Crochet Sunflower Blanket Patternโ€”crafted without the fuss of extensive sewing! I adore the classic look of granny square sunflower blankets but find the assembly tedious. So, why not simplify things and create one giant square instead?

While a small amount of sewing is needed to finish the blanket, itโ€™s significantly less than what youโ€™d face with a traditional granny square sunflower design.

This easy crochet sunflower afghan is technically still a granny square; however, itโ€™s a continuous granny square, allowing you to make it in any size you desire. For instance, I designed my crochet sunflower blanket pattern to be the perfect size for a baby blanket.

You can also pair the sunflower blanket with my crochet sunflower pillow pattern!

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Choice. I made the crochet sunflower blanket pattern with acrylic yarn, but you can use any yarn you wish to complete it.
    2. Blanket Dimensions. The dimensions of the crochet sunflower blanket pattern are roughly 36x36 inches. If your blanket is a bit smaller, just add more rows. The pattern is extremely versatile, allowing you to customize the size to your preference.
    3. Flower Colors. I made the flowers into sunflowers, but you can use any color to create different flowers. You can use my crochet flower applique pattern or even a few of my coasters as appliques like my crochet cherry blossom coaster pattern or my crochet 6 petal flower coaster pattern.

    • Caron one pound yarn -1 skein of cream (for baby blanket size, you will need 1-3 more skeins if you want to make a larger blanket)
    • 1 skein Red Heart Soft with Love - Lettuce
    • Small ball of Red Heart Yarn - Lemon
    • Small ball of Red Heart Yarn - Cafe Latte
    • 5.5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle

๐Ÿ’ญ Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms)

    ๐Ÿง‹ Variations

    • Use different shades of yellow to create unique sunflowers.
    • Adjust the size of the blanket for larger coverage!

๐Ÿต Instructions for Crochet Sunflower Blanket Pattern

The crochet sunflower blanket pattern is worked in rounds and is one singular base with appliques added.

First row of crochet granny square.

Round 1: Make a mr, ch x2 (counts as a dc) and then dc x2 in the circle then ch x2. Then dc x3, ch x2 into the magic ring another 3x.

Then join to the first dc (the ch x2 from the beginning of the round). You should have 4 sides.

Second row of crochet solid granny square.

Round 2-25: Ch x2. Then dc in each dc stitch from the previous round, dc x2, ch x2, dc x2 in each ch x2 corner stitch. Then sl st to the first dc (the beginning ch x2) at the end of each round to join.

completed base for the crochet sunflower baby blanket.

You want the baby blanket to be roughly 36 x36 inches.

When you get to the size blanket you would like to make, sc the entire edge. The corners should be sc x3.

    Crochet Wave Border:

This is a 2 steps forward 1 step back type of edging.

Make 3 chains after joining the yarn.

Step 1: Join the light thyme colored yarn to the edge in any stitch.

Step 2: Ch x3, going BACKWARDS, skip 2 and sl st into the 3rd stitch.

    Go back 3 stitches.

Chain 3 for the next step in making the wave border.

Step 3: Ch x3, dc x6 in the chain space you just created going FORWARD.

Double crochet x6 in the chain space.

Secure wave stitch to the base of the blanket.

Step 4: Counting FORWARDS skip 2 and sl st into the 3rd stitch. You now created the first wave in the border.

    Finished border on blanket.

Repeat steps 2-4 until you reach the end of the row.

NOTE: when you go backwards, you want to go BEHIND the previous wave, not in front of it to make the next wave stitch.ย

When you are finished, join to the beginning, fasten off and weave in the end.

    Crochet Sunflower Appliques:

    Make x3 appliques.

    Start of crochet sunflower middle.
Puff stitch round for the crochet sunflower.

Round 1: Using light brown yarn, make a mr and sc x6 into the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x6 in the second chain from the hook. (6)

Round 2: Inc in every sc. (12)

Round 3: Make a puff stitch in the next stitch.

*How to make a puff stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, go back into the stitch, yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over, go back into the stitch, yarn over, go back through the stitch and then go through all 7 loops on the hook at once.

Then ch and make a puff stitch into the following sc. Repeat for the rest of the round. Make sure to make a ch after every puff. (24)

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Finished petal round on the crochet sunflower applique.

Round 4: Join the yellow yarn to one of the ch spaces from the brown circle. Make an increase in that ch space, then a sc in the next stitch. Repeat for the rest of the round (36).

Round 5: This is the row to make the sunflower petals. In the first stitch: *Dc x2 + tr. Then ch + skip the next stitch and make a tr + dc x2 in the following stitch. Sl st into the next stitch. You just made 1 petal. Repeat from * for the rest of the round.

And now you have a crochet sunflower! But what's a sunflower without the leaves:

    Crochet Sunflower Leaves:

    Make x6.

Finished leaf for the sunflower applique.

With the green yarn, ch x11 + 1 turning ch (12 chains total). In the second chain from the hook make a sc. Then hdc, dc, tr x5, dc, hdc, sc, ch and turn the piece over to the other side of the ch row. Next, sc, hdc, dc, tr x5, dc, hdc, sc. Fasten off and leave the tail for sewing.

    Sewing:

Sew leaf to the bottom side of the sunflower. I like putting 2 leaves on each crochet sunflower.ย

Then, sew the crochet sunflowers onto the blanket. I put 2 crochet sunflowers in one corner and 1 sunflower into the opposite corner.ย

If you are making a larger blanket feel free to make as many crochet sunflower appliques as you want for your blanket.

Once all the sewing is done, you now have a crochet sunflower blanket! Perfect for fall evenings to snuggle up with.

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Choose Your Yarn Wisely: Opt for a soft and durable yarn, especially if the blanket will be used frequently. Acrylic is great for easy care, while cotton offers breathability.
    • Use a Larger Hook for Looser Stitches: If you prefer a more open and airy design, consider using a larger hook size to create a looser stitch pattern.
    • Experiment with Borders: Besides the wave border, try other borders like scallops or picots for added texture and visual interest.
    • Add Personal Touches: Personalize your blanket with initials, names, or other appliques that reflect your style or the recipient's interests.

    ๐Ÿงต Pattern FAQs

The crochet wave border is a bit too difficult for me to do, are there any alternatives I can use to get a similar effect?

The crochet wave border is similar to a shell border, so you could use a simple shell border instead.

Can I use different yarn types for this pattern?

Yes! You can experiment with different yarn types such as cotton or chunky yarn. Just keep in mind that this may affect the final size and drape of the blanket.

How do I wash my finished blanket?

Most acrylic yarns are machine washable; however, always check the care instructions on your yarn label. Itโ€™s usually safe to wash on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low.
