Dive into the warmth of sunshine with my Crochet Sunflower Blanket Pattern! This delightful design offers all the charm of traditional granny squares without the hassle of sewing them together. Perfect for cozy evenings or as a thoughtful gift, this blanket will brighten any space!
Check out my unique Crochet Sunflower Blanket Pattern—crafted without the fuss of extensive sewing! I adore the classic look of granny square sunflower blankets but find the assembly tedious. So, why not simplify things and create one giant square instead?
While a small amount of sewing is needed to finish the blanket, it’s significantly less than what you’d face with a traditional granny square sunflower design.
This easy crochet sunflower afghan is technically still a granny square; however, it’s a continuous granny square, allowing you to make it in any size you desire. For instance, I designed my sunflower crochet blanket to be the perfect size for a baby blanket.

🍵 Instructions for Crochet Sunflower Blanket
This pattern is worked in rounds.
Round 1: Make a mr, ch 2 and then dc x3 in the circle. Ch x2, dc x3, ch x2 and dc x3, ch x2 and dc x3, ch x2 and join the first dc. You should have 4 sides.
Round 2-25: Ch x2. Dc in each dc stitch from the previous round, dc x2, ch x2, dc x2 in each chx2 corner stitch. Join to the first dc at the end of each round.
This is the size you need for a baby blanket, if you want the blanket bigger make more rows until the size you want is reached.
When you get to the size blanket you would like to make, sc the entire edge. The corners should be 2 sc, 1 ch, 2sc.
Crochet Wave Border:
This is a 2 steps forward 1 step back type of edging.
Step 1: Join the light thyme colored yarn to the edge in any stitch.
Step 2: Ch x3, going BACKWARDS, skip 2 and sl st into the 3rd stitch.
Step 3: Ch x3, dc x6 in the chain space you just created going FORWARD.
Step 4: Counting FORWARDS skip 2 and sl st into the 3rd stitch. You now created the first wave in the border.
Repeat steps 2-4 until you reach the end of the row. NOTE: when you go backwards, you want to go BEHIND the previous wave, not in front of it to make the next wave stitch.
When you are finished, fasten off and weave in the end.
Crochet Sunflower Appliques (x3)
Round 1: Using light brown yarn, make a MR and make sc x6 in the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x6 in the second chain from the hook. (6)
Round 2: Inc in every sc. (12)
Round 3: In every sc from the previous round make a puff stitch (yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, go back into the stitch, yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over, go back into the stitch, yarn over, go back through the stitch and then go through all 7 loops on the hook at once). Then ch and make a puff stitch into the following sc. Repeat for the rest of the round. Make sure to make a ch after every puff. (24)
Fasten off and weave in the end.
Round 4: Join the light yellow yarn to one of the ch spaces from the brown circle. Make an increase in that ch space, then a sc in the next stitch. Repeat for the rest of the round (36).
Round 5: This is the row to make the sunflower petals. [Dc x2, tr in one stitch. Then ch + skip the next stitch and make a tr, dc x2 in the following stitch. Sl st into the next stitch.] You just made 1 petal. Repeat what's in the brackets for the rest of the round. And now you have a sunflower! But what's a sunflower without the leaves:
Crochet Leaf Pattern (x6):
With the green yarn, ch 11 + 1 turning ch (12 chains total). In the second chain from the hook make a sc. Then hdc, dc, tr x5, dc, hdc, sc, ch and turn the piece over to the other side of the ch row. Sc, hdc, dc, tr x5, dc, hdc, sc. Fasten off and leave the tail for sewing.
Sew leaf to the bottom side of the sunflower. I like putting 2 leaves on each sunflower.
Sew the sunflowers onto the blanket. I put 2 sunflowers in one corner and 1 sunflower into the opposite corner.
If you are making a larger blanket feel free to make as many sunflower appliques as you want for your blanket.
Once all the sewing is done, you now have a crochet sunflower blanket! Perfect for fall evenings to snuggle up with.
🐌Expert Tips
- Choose Your Yarn Wisely: Opt for a soft and durable yarn, especially if the blanket will be used frequently. Acrylic is great for easy care, while cotton offers breathability.
- Use a Larger Hook for Looser Stitches: If you prefer a more open and airy design, consider using a larger hook size to create a looser stitch pattern.
- Experiment with Borders: Besides the wave border, try other borders like scallops or picots for added texture and visual interest.
- Add Personal Touches: Personalize your blanket with initials, names, or other appliques that reflect your style or the recipient's interests.
🧵 Pattern FAQs
The crochet wave border is similar to a shell border, so you could use a simple shell border instead.
Yes! You can experiment with different yarn types such as cotton or chunky yarn. Just keep in mind that this may affect the final size and drape of the blanket.
Most acrylic yarns are machine washable; however, always check the care instructions on your yarn label. It’s usually safe to wash on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low.
