This beautiful crochet sunflower bag pattern is a great project for all crochet levels and makes a stylish accessory for summer and fall. The texture of the bag is simply scrumptious!

Finished crochet sunflower bag on a wooden table.

Recently, I made a Crochet Sunflower Pillow and instantly knew I wanted to create a version as a crochet phone bag. The texture and gorgeousness of the sunflower pillow needed to be shared with the world, not just kept at home where few could see it in all its glory.

So, I came up with the crochet sunflower purse! It's big enough for a phone, wallet, and a few other small items. The perfect bag for a farmers market trip, a campus stroll, or even a day at the pumpkin patch. I’m OBSESSED with this small crochet phone purse, and I’ll be wearing it to work too!

My husband also loves sunflowers. Although this crochet flower bag is for me, I made him Sunflower Crochet Coasters earlier in the year so he can enjoy sunflowers too.

My crochet sunflower bag pattern is easy to follow, especially if you know how to do the Crochet Bobble Stitch. Just be sure to keep track of the correct number of stitches per round—a common slip-up of mine, haha!

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn and Hook Considerations: The Crochet Sunflower Bag Pattern is made with worsted weight yarn, but you can use any weight yarn. Just keep in mind that lighter (DK) yarns will result in a smaller bag, while bulky yarns will make the bag larger. Remember to adjust your hook size if switching yarn weights.
    2. Crocheting in Rounds: The sunflower bag pattern is crocheted in the round, similar to my Crochet Orange Bag Pattern. The petals are also made in the round along the edge of the bag, making it a “low-sew” project! You’ll only need to sew on the bag strap and the two leaves.
    3. Finished Size: The finished crochet sunflower bag pattern is roughly 10 inches in diameter, not counting the leaves. The size may vary depending on your yarn tension, yarn type, and hook size.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Caron one pound - brown
    • Caron one pound - sunflower yellow
    • Red Heart - medium thyme
    • Red Heart - black
    • Tapestry needle
    • 5.5mm hook

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring - mr
    • Chain - ch
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Increase - inc
    • Half double crochet - hdc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Triple crochet - tr
    • Slip stitch - sl st
    • Bobble stitch - a special stitch to know but no abbreviations will be given

🍵Instructions for Crochet Sunflower Bag Pattern

    Sunflower Middle:

This pattern is made in rounds. Make x2.

First round of bobble stitches for the crochet flower bag.

Round 1: Using the brown yarn, make a mr and sc x6 into it. Then join the 1st stitch to the last with a slip stitch.

Round 2: Make a sc in the next stitch. Then in the same stitch make a bobble stitch*.

*A bobble stitch is made by yarning over, inserting the hook into the stitch, yarn over, draw loop back through stitch, yarn over pull through 2 loops then STOP. You will have a half completed dc hanging from your hook. Repeat the steps 3 more times until you have 4 half completed dc stitches hanging from your hook and 5 loops ON your hook. Then yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.*

Finished middle part of the crochet sunflower bag.

Bobble stitches are usually made with 4 or 5 half completed dc stitches so you can choose either one just make sure to keep it consistent for the project.

You want to continue making a sc and bobble stitch in every stitch for this round. You should end with 6 sc and 6 bobble stitches for round 2 (12). Then sl st to the 1st sc you made in the round.

Round 3: This round is just single crochets, we need to create some distance in between bobble rows so they won’t be too constricted.

Sc inc in every stitch (24). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 4: Sc in the same stitch as the join, then make a bobble stitch in the NEXT stitch. Then make a sc in the following stitch. Each previous round stitch gets only 1 stitch in it this round, instead of 2 like we did in round 2.

Keep repeating and alternating sc and bobble stitches for the rest of the round (24). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

You should have 12 bobble stitches.

Round 5: Sc inc, sc, then repeat for the rest of the round (36). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 6: Repeat round 4, but you’ll end up with 6 more bobbles than the last round (36). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 7: Sc inc, sc x2, then repeat for the rest of the round (48). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 8: Repeat round 4 (48). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 9: Sc inc, sc x3, then repeat for the rest of the round (60). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 10: Repeat round 4 (60). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 11: Sc inc, sc x4, then repeat for the rest of the round (72). Then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Make 2 of these so you have a front and a back. Fasten off one but keep the second one attached to the skein.

Round 12: With the bobble sides facing out, line up the 2 crochet circles and crochet them together. Make sure you only crochet ONE SIDE of the sunflower for 15 stitches (this is the opening) (72). Now you can fasten off the yarn and weave in any tails.

    Sunflower Petals:

Start of the first round for the crochet sunflower petal pattern.

Round 13: USING 2 STRANDS OF THE YELLOW YARN: Join the yellow yarn to anywhere on the crochet circles and make a ch. Then sc into the same stitch. Then ch x5 and sc inc into the next stitch, skip the following stitch and make a sc inc in the next.

Finished first round of the petals for the crochet flower purse.

Repeat ch x5, sc inc, skip stitch, and sc inc for the rest of the round. Sl st to the chain you made at the beginning of the round.

fully finished crochet sunflower petal for the crochet sunflower purse.

Round 14: In the chain loop, hdc x2, dc x2, ch x1, dc x2, hdc x2. Then make a sl st in between the two sets of sc inc you made in the row below, right where you have a skipped stitch.

Finished crochet sunflower bag base on a wooden table.

Repeat this process for the rest of the round. Join to the beginning of the round and fasten off the yarn. Weave in any yarn ends.

    Sunflower Leaves: Make x2

First round of the crochet sunflower leaf pattern.

Round 1: USING 2 STRANDS OF THE GREEN YARN: Make a mr, and then sc x7 in it. After, sl st to the 1st stitch.

Finished second round for the crochet sunflower leaf.

Round 2: Ch x2 and make 3 dc in the next stitch, then make a dc inc in the next 2 stitches. Next, make 3 tr stitches in the following stitch. Then dc inc in the next 2 stitches. After, make 3 dc in the next stitch. Ch x2 and make a sl st to the 1st sc in round 1.

    Finished crochet sunflower leaf.

Round 3: Ch x2 and make a sc + hdc in the next stitch. In the following stitch make 3 dc. Then make a dc inc in the next 6 stitches. Next tr + ch + tr in the following stitch. Dc inc in the next 6 stitches. Make 3 dc in the next stitch. Hdc + sc in the following stitch. Finally ch x1 and sl st to the last ch of round 2.

A crochet chain made out of black yarn.

    Bag Strap:

You can either buy a strap, or crochet one. I made a simple one by doubling the strands of black yarn like I did for the leaves and petals and made a chain of 141.

    Assembly:

The flower part is assembled earlier, but you will need to sew the strap to the top of the opening of the bag and add the leaves to where you would like them to be placed on the bag. I chose to have both on the same side under the bag opening.

And there you have it—a completed crochet sunflower bag! Perfect for summer and fall, and a great way to show off your love for sunflowers.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Stitch Counting: Count your stitches between each round to maintain accuracy. It helps prevent errors and ensures your crochet sunflower bag is consistent.
    • Consistent Bobble Stitching: Make sure your bobble stitches are uniform. Pulling too tight or too loose can cause them to look uneven.
    • Snug Assembly: When crocheting the two sunflower circles together, ensure the bobble sides are facing out for a consistent, polished look.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

    Can I use chunky yarn?

Yes! Chunky yarn will transform the Crochet Sunflower Bag Pattern into a larger tote rather than a phone bag. Just keep this size change in mind.

Can I use alternative handles for the crochet sunflower bag pattern?

Absolutely! While I prefer crochet handles, you can use a store-bought strap for extra durability.

How do I make a fabric liner for the bag?

After completing the brown flower middle, lay it on fabric and cut two slightly larger circles. Sew them together, then hand-stitch or machine-sew the liner to the inside of the crochet sunflower bag’s top edge.
