Capybara-bara! My Crochet Capybara Coaster Pattern is a perfect way to accessorize your morning cup of coffee. The capybara with oranges on its head is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face.
I love capybaras, but my husband is on another level obsessed with them. And honestly, who could blame him? They are super cute and look so relaxed when they're in hot springs with fruit floating around them. Capybaras with oranges, lemons, and tangerines—it's all so adorable!
So, here's my ode to the majestic capybara—a somewhat large crochet coaster. I say large because it's about 5 inches in diameter, so it should fit a variety of coffee cup sizes.
The capybara coaster is a cute, cartoon-style capybara with an orange or tangerine on its head. Because it's so small, I like to think of it as a capybara with tangerines, but you can imagine any citrus you want. You could also skip the citrus on its head and pair it with my Citrus Crochet Coaster Pattern or my Crochet Lemon Coaster Pattern.
You can also make two crochet capybara coasters and sew them together (leaving the top open) to create a little pouch. Add a small crochet strap, and pair it with my Crochet Lemon Bag Pattern or Orange Crochet Bag Pattern.

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Choice: Use cotton yarn for the capybara coaster. If you use acrylic yarn, it can be transformed into a cute crochet capybara applique—perfect for blankets and other decorative items that don’t require absorbency. My Crochet Strawberry Blanket Pattern uses a variation of my Crochet Strawberry Coaster Pattern as a blanket applique since it is made with acrylic yarn.
- Skill Level: This pattern is ideal for intermediate crocheters learning how to crochet coasters. It is worked in the round with only four rounds, but it involves a few color changes. It starts as a simple circle, with the capybara elements added in the final round.
- Finished Size: The completed coaster is roughly 4.5-5 inches wide. You can always adjust the hook size if you want the capybara crochet coaster to be larger or smaller.
💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

🍵Instructions for Crochet Capybara Coaster Pattern
This pattern is made in rounds. I will show you how to crochet a capybara for beginners.
Round 1: Using the brown yarn, make a magic ring and immediately chain 2. Then dc x12 into the magic ring. To secure the round, sl st to the 1st dc in the round (12). Fasten off the brown yarn and switch it to jute yarn.
Round 2: Ch x2, then dc inc in every stitch from the previous round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (24).
Round 3: Ch x2, then dc inc, dc and repeat for the rest of the round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (36).
Round 4: This is the last round for the crochet bear coaster and will help create its overall shape.
Sc, sl st, and switch the jute yarn to brown. You don't have to fasten off the jute yarn, just tuck it under the stitches needed for the ear. In the next stitch (do not skip a stitch) make: dc, tr x2, and dc.
Then immediately make a sl st in the following stitch and switch colors back to jute. You do not need to fasten off the brown yarn, just tuck it under the next couple of stitches until you need to use it again for the next ear. Then sc x6 along the next 6 stitches. Then make a sl st and switch the color back to brown.
Now make the second ear like you did before: dc, tr x2, dc in the following stitch. Then sl st in the next stitch and switch the yarn back to jute. This is where you can fasten off and weave in the ends for the brown yarn.
After anchoring the ear, follow the sequence of stitches for the rest of the round:
Sc, sc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, hdc inc, sc x8, hdc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, sc inc, sl st to 1st sc in the round and fasten off. Then weave in any loose ends.
Crochet Tangerine:
Round 1: Using the orange yarn, make a mr and make sc x6 in the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x6 in the second chain from the hook. (6)
Round 2: Inc in every sc. (12) then fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Finishing:
Sew the tangerine/orange to the top of the crochet capybara’s head.
Then using the black yarn make little eyes on opposite sides of the brown circle, and then make an embroidered Y nose in the brown circle from round 1.
And now your capybara coaster is done! I hope you enjoyed my crochet capybara pattern!
If you have leftover brown and jute yarns, you can make my Bear Coaster Crochet Pattern since it uses the same yarn colors.
🐌Expert Tips
- Avoid Messy Backs: To keep the back of your coaster tidy, slide the yarn under the stitches on the back until you reach the next spot for embroidery. This minimizes visibility of the yarn on the back. Just ensure the yarn doesn't peek through on the front.
- Securing the Magic Ring: When making the magic ring, pull the yarn tight enough to avoid a hole in the center. Consider double-threading the tail through the stitches for extra security.
- Even Tension: Keep a consistent grip on your hook and yarn to avoid curled edges. Adjust your tension or switch to a smaller hook if your coaster tends to curl.
🧵Pattern FAQs
Crochet coasters are just as good as cork, felt, stone, and other store-bought coasters. They are just handmade and more versatile in shape and design.
It is because you have tension variation. Try keeping your crochet stitches the same size by having the same grip on your hook and yarn throughout your project.
Yes! They use very little yarn and can be completed in minutes. You can have a whole crochet coaster set made in just an hour.
