Coffee and donuts? Thereโ€™s no better pairing! This Crochet Donut Coaster Pattern is a delightful way to accessorize your home for morning coffee. Itโ€™s quick to make, taking only 3 rounds, so you'll have a dozen ready in no time!

Multiple crochet donut coasters on table with cup.

This pattern is ideal for beginners who know the basic crochet stitches. Itโ€™s perfect for last-minute gifts like Christmas, housewarming, or baby showers. Impress your guests at breakfast by letting them know you made these adorable coasters! Theyโ€™re also great for selling at markets or online (finished products only).

The coaster pattern uses cotton yarn. It is very important that you use cotton yarn for coasters. Cotton yarn is a great fiber of choice because of how breathable it is, and absorbent.

I love working with cotton yarn and even have a few crochet patterns that use it like my Crochet Duck Hat Pattern, Crochet Strawberry Coaster Pattern, and my Crochet Spa Set. Cotton yarn is great for summer hats, wash rags, and coasters because of the aforementioned qualities in its fiber. Acrylic isnโ€™t absorbent and would be a poor yarn choice for this product.

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Use Cotton Yarn: Cotton yarn is essential for absorbency. If using acrylic, try turning the coaster into a cute applique for blankets or dรฉcor that doesnโ€™t need absorbency, like my crochet strawberry applique pattern.
    2. Beginner-Friendly Pattern: This simple pattern uses only 3 rounds, making it ideal for beginners.
    3. Adjustable Size: The finished crochet donut coaster pattern is about 4.5 inches wide. Change the hook size if youโ€™d like it larger or smaller.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - frosting colors (pink)
    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - tan
    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - various colors for sprinkles
    • 4.5mm crochet hook
    • Tapestry needle

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Half double crochet - hdc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Slip stitch - sl st
    • Increase - inc
    • Back Loop Only - blo

    * The ch x2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Skip over it and sl st to the first dc you made.

    * If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

You can switch the yarn color of the frosting and sprinkles to create a variety of donuts.

๐ŸตInstructions for Crochet Donut Coaster Pattern

The crochet donut coaster pattern is made in rounds.

First round of the crochet donut is done.

Round 1: Using frosting color, make a magic ring and immediately chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). Then dc x24 into the magic ring. To secure the round, sl st to the 1st dc in the round (24). When you pull the magic ring tight there will be a hole in the center of your coaster. This is the donut hole.

Second round of the crochet donut is done.

Round 2: Ch x2, then dc inc, dc and repeat for the rest of the round (36). Then sl st to the first dc in the round and fasten off the frosting color and switch it to tan.

Start of the hdc blo only round of the crochet donut.

Round 3: Ch x1, then in blo hdc inc, hdc x2 and repeat for the rest of the round (48). Every stitch this round will be in blo. Then fasten off the tan yarn and fasten off the yarn. Finally weave in any ends.

The crochet donut is done, just without the embroidered sprinkles.

    Embroidery:

Using 1-3 colors of cotton yarn, create sprinkles on the frosting of the crochet donut coaster. You can change the direction of the sprinkles, and also the lengths if you want.

Now the crochet donut coaster pattern is finished! I hope you enjoy your new donut coasters!

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Clean Back Embroidery: To keep the back neat, slide the yarn under stitches when moving to new spots. Ensure it doesnโ€™t show on the front.
    • Clean Backside of the Coaster: If you don't want to be careful with your embroidery stitches you can still hide the messy back of the coaster! Just trace, cut and glue (with fabric glue) a piece of felt to the backside of the coaster.
    • Think Outside the Coaster: You can turn this into a crochet donut applique or crochet donut garland!

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

What is the best crochet yarn for making coasters?

The best yarn for crocheting coasters is generally cotton because it is durable, absorbent, holds up well to heat, and is easy to wash.

Why do my crochet coasters curl?

Crochet coasters tend to curl if there is a variation in tension. Aim to maintain uniform stitch sizes for the best results.

    Are crochet coasters practical?

Crochet coasters are equally effective as those made from cork, felt, stone, or other materials found in stores. The distinct advantage of crochet coasters is that they are handmade, offering a wider variety in design.
