Turn basic crochet round coasters into watermelons with my Watermelon Crochet Coaster Pattern. These crochet watermelon coasters are a fun way to celebrate summer, especially for those ice-cold summer drinks!

    Finished crochet watermelon coaster.

I love making crochet coasters, and my favorite method is to work in the round. By making crochet coasters this way, you can create a coaster in just a few rounds. For instance, my crochet watermelon coaster can be completed in five rounds and takes only 20 minutes to make.

Similarly, my other round crochet coaster patterns, the Citrus Crochet Coaster Pattern and the Crochet Lemon Coaster Pattern, use a similar number of rounds and require the same amount of time to complete!

If you want to expand your watermelon crochet projects, you can take the crochet watermelon pattern and turn it into granny squares, similar to my Lemon Granny Square Crochet Pattern, and then create a bag like my Crochet Lemon Bag Pattern. The watermelon coaster has the same rounds and measurements as the lemon granny square used in both patterns, making it easy to substitute the lemon for a watermelon round!

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Choice. Use cotton yarn for the crochet watermelon pattern. If you use acrylic yarn, you can turn the coasters into cute watermelon appliqués, perfect for blankets and other decorative elements that don't require absorbency.
    2. Beginner Friendly. This pattern is perfect for beginners, as it is worked in the round and consists of only five rounds.
    3. Size Adjustments. The finished watermelon coaster measures roughly 4.5 inches wide. You can alter the hook size if you want a larger or smaller coaster.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - rose pink
    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - hot green
    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - white
    • Lily Sugar N Cream cotton yarn - black
    • 4.5mm crochet hook
    • Tapestry needle

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Single crochet - sc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Slip stitch - sl st
    • Increase - inc

    🧋Variations

Watermelon Appliqués. Use the watermelon pattern to create appliqués for bags, hats, or other crochet projects. Simply fasten off after round 5 and sew or attach them to your desired item.

Multiple Colors. Experiment with different shades of pink and green to create a unique look for each coaster. Try using variegated yarn for a fun twist on the classic watermelon design.

🍵Instructions for Watermelon Crochet Coaster Pattern

The crochet watermelon coaster pattern is made in rounds.

Starting round of the crochet watermelon coaster.

Round 1: Using pink, make a magic ring and immediately chain 2. Then dc x12 into the magic ring. To secure the round, sl st to the 1st dc in the round (12).

Second round of the crochet watermelon coaster.

Round 2: Ch x2, then dc inc in every stitch from the previous round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (24).

Third round of the crochet watermelon coaster.

Round 3: Ch x2, then dc inc, dc and repeat for the rest of the round (36). Then sl st to the first dc in the round and fasten off the pink yarn and switch it to white.

Fourth round of the crochet watermelon coaster.

Round 4: Ch x1, then sc inc, sc x2 and repeat for the rest of the round (48). Then fasten off the white yarn and switch it to the green.

Fifth round of the crochet watermelon coaster.

Round 5: Sc in every stitch from the last round (48). Then fasten off the green yarn and weave in any ends.

    Finished crochet watermelon coaster.

    Embroidery:

Using the black yarn and tapestry needle, create little watermelon seeds in the pink part of the watermelon. I made 8 seeds around round 2 but you can do it anyway you want.

And now you have your very own watermelon crochet coaster! Perfect to use for those nice cold summer drinks like tea and lemonade.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Clean Color Changes. To achieve a cleaner color change, pull up the new color yarn when making the joining slip stitch.
    • Tension Consistency. Maintaining consistent tension will help prevent curling in your coasters. Try to keep your stitch sizes uniform for the best results.
    • Use of Leftovers. If you have leftover yarn from other projects, use it to create different variations of the watermelon coaster, like adding extra layers for a thicker look or experimenting with different colors for a fun twist.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

What is the best crochet yarn for making coasters?

The best yarn for crocheting coasters is generally cotton because it is durable, absorbent, holds up well to heat, and is easy to wash.

Why do my crochet coasters curl?

Crochet coasters tend to curl if there is a variation in tension. Aim to maintain uniform stitch sizes for the best results.

    Are crochet coasters practical?

Crochet coasters are equally effective as those made from cork, felt, stone, or other materials found in stores. The distinct advantage of crochet coasters is that they are handmade, offering a wider variety in design.
