My Crochet Tea Bag Bookmark Pattern is the perfect way to combine three things you love: tea, books, and crocheting! It's simple enough for beginners to crochet.

Finished green and brown tea bag bookmarks.

As someone who runs a blog with a caffeinated theme, I thought it would be best to have some caffeinated projects, starting with this lovely tea bag crochet bookmark.

The tea bag bookmark is a great beginner project because it uses very little yarn and is quick to make. Its simplicity also makes it ideal for creating items for markets!

Crocheting a bookmark is straightforward. You just need to create a long chain with an adornment at the top, and occasionally at both the top and bottom. This easy crochet bookmark pattern follows the same concept.

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Choice. I used acrylic worsted weight for this pattern, but any worsted weight yarn will work, including cotton and wool.
    2. Chain Length. Adjust the chain length as necessary. All books are different, so feel free to make your crochet bookmark longer or shorter based on your preference.
    3. Size. The finished tea bag bookmark is approximately 2 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • 4.5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle
    • Red Heart white yarn
    • Red Heart cafe latte yarn for black tea
    • Red heart tea leaf yarn for green tea

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Chain - ch
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Increase - inc
    • Decrease - dec
    • Slip stitch - sl st

    🧋Variations

You can change the length of the crochet tea bag bookmark by altering the number of chains you make.

Experiment with different colors for the tea bags to represent various flavors.

🍵Instructions for Crochet Tea Bag Bookmark Pattern

The tea bag bookmark crochet pattern starts with a chain but is worked in rounds not rows.

    Small brown crochet chain.

To start: With the tea-colored yarn, ch x7

Crochet around the chain in a circle.

Round 1: In the second chain from the hook make a sc. Sc in each of the next 4 chains. In the last stitch make 3 sc into the stitch. This will help you round your corner to get to the otherside of the chain. Then sc for the next 4 chains. In the last stitch make an increase. (14)

A few rounds into the brown part of the tea bag.

Round 2-5: Sc in each stitch. (14) Then fasten off the tea-colored yarn and join the white yarn.

Switching the brown yarn for white yarn on the top of the tea bag.

Round 6-7: Sc in every stitch. (14)

Start decreasing the white part of the tea bag.

    Round 8: Dec, sc x3, dec x 2, sc x3, dec. (10)

Finished portion of the tea bag bookmark.

    Round 9: Dec x5. (5)

Fasten off your yarn but leave enough to sew the top of the tea bag closed. Then sew the tea bag closed.

Rejoining yarn to the top of the tea bag.

Now you want to rejoin the yarn to the top middle of the tea bag and ch x60.

Making a long chain for the bookmark.

Making the tea tag at the other end of the bookmark.

In the 3rd chain from the hook make a dc. Dc x2 and then make a sl st.

Finished tea tag at the other end of the bookmark.

Fasten off and weave in any ends.

And now you have a crochet tea bag bookmark and know the basis of how to crochet a bookmark as well with my easy crochet bookmark pattern! Happy crocheting! Stay caffeinated!

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Pronounced Tea Tag. For a more pronounced tea tag, you can do 2 rows of sc for 3 stitches or make a triple crochet instead of a double crochet.
    • Color Combinations. Don't be afraid to experiment with colors! Mixing shades can create a unique look for each bookmark.
    • Use Different Yarns. While I recommend worsted weight for the bookmark, consider using cotton yarn for a more durable option that will hold its shape better over time.
    • Personalize Your Bookmark. Add embellishments such as beads or charms at the end of the chain to give your bookmark a personalized touch.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

Can I use chunky yarn for making crochet bookmarks?

Using chunky yarn for the ends of the bookmark is fine as long as they aren’t inside the book. However, I highly advise sticking with a worsted weight or smaller yarn for the middle to keep the bookmark as flat as possible.

If I wanted to add a face to the bookmarks, what could I do?

You can either use super small safety eyes and insert them before you start decreasing, or you can embroider the face.

Can I turn this tea bag bookmark into something else?

Yes! You can turn it into a bag charm or keychain by adjusting the chain length.

I love this pattern! I discovered that it also makes an adorable Barbie doll tote. All I did was add a chain strap after finishing the colored part. I'm going ro make some for the little girls in my life that play with Barbies!
