It’s fall which means its chestnut season! I wanted to celebrate by making a crochet chestnut pattern! It’s super easy and can be made in under an hour.

When I was in college, I went to school in Rome for 2 years. During my first winter there I was walking around and came across roasted chestnut vendors. At this point in my life I never had a chestnut, but had 3Euros in my pocket and decided to give them a try. It shortly became my favorite mid-day treat in winter, well besides the Cannella de Arancia (cinnamon and candied orange) gelato when I was closer to my favorite gelato spot - Fiore De Luna in the Trastevere neighborhood.
The crochet chestnut pattern is an ode to the winters in Italy, while my crochet lemon bag pattern is my ode to Italy’s summers. One of these days I will be back!
Enough talking, let’s get started making this crochet chestnut pattern!

✏️ Things To Note:
- Size: The crochet chestnut pattern, minus the shell, is roughly 2.5 inches tall, making it fast to complete. My crochet candy corn pattern and crochet poptart pattern are also similar in size in case you were wanting to make more food crochet patterns.
- Yarn Type: I used worsted weight acrylic, but you can use any yarn for this pattern.
- Yarning Over: Because its small, I decided to yarn over like I normally do, but you can complete this easily using the yarn under method.
🪡 Materials Needed
- Big Twist - brown (any medium/dark warm brown will do)
- Bernat Value - Topaz
- Red heart - Frosty Green
- Eyelash Yarn - Green
- 9 or 10mm Safety eyes
- Black, white, and pink yarn for embroidery
- Polyfill
- 4mm hook
- Tapestry needle
💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)
- Chains - ch
- Slip stitch - sl st
- Single crochet - sc
- Increase - inc
- Decrease - dec
* If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.
🍵Instructions for Crochet Chestnut Pattern
The Crochet Chestnut Pattern is made in the round.

Round 1: With the light brown yarn, ch x9, then make a sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Make another 6 sc stitches. Make 3 sc in the last stitch and turn to the unworked side of the chain, sc x6.
In the last ch make 2 sc stitches and then sl st to the first sc you made in the round. This marks the end of the round and will be your new starting point. This is also the only round you will make a sl st to finish it off (18).

Round 2: Sc x6, inc x3 and then repeat for the other half of the round (24).
Round 3: Inc, sc x3 and then repeat for the rest of the round (30). Then fasten off the light brown yarn at the end of this round and join the darker brown yarn.

Round 4-9: Sc in every stitch (30). You want to add eyes to the crochet chestnut now. I added mine between rounds 6 and 7 with about 4 stitches in between them.
Round 10: Dec, sc x8, then repeat for the rest of the round (27).
Round 11: Dec, sc x7, then repeat for the rest of the round (24).
Round 12: Dec, sc x6, then repeat for the rest of the round (21). Begin to stuff the crochet chestnut!
Round 13: Dec, sc x5, then repeat for the rest of the round (18).
Round 14: Dec, sc, then repeat for the rest of the round (12). You decreased 6 times instead of 3 for this round!
Round 15: Dec, sc x2, then repeat for the rest of the round (9).
Round 16: Dec, sc, then repeat for the rest of the round (6). Fasten off your yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Take your needle and sew the top of the chestnut closed. Weave in the tails.

Embroidery:
Add white to the outer side of the eye balls to make them pop! This can be tricky due to the backings on the safety eyes.
Add a smile in between the eyes by using the black yarn.
Then add a dash of pink to right below the outer eye. I have my blush only going over 1 stitch.
And now the crochet chestnut pattern is done! Time to move onto the chestnut shell!

Crochet Chestnut’s Inner Shell:
You want to make the inner before the outershell.
Round 1: Using the light thyme yarn, make a mr and sc x6 in the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x6 in the second chain from the hook. (6)
Round 2: Inc in every sc (12).
Round 3: Inc, sc, then repeat until end of round (18).
Round 4: Inc, sc x2, then repeat until end of round (24).
Round 5: Inc, sc x3, then repeat until end of round (30).
Round 6-7: Sc in every stitch (30). Fasten off and weave in the yarn.
Crochet Chestnut Outer Shell:
DOUBLE STRAND this portion of the pattern using BOTH the light thyme yarn and the eyelash yarn (this makes it easier to see your stitches). Follow the inner shell pattern.
You want to make sure your stitches are tight because you are now using 2 strands of yarn and the inner shell will be a bit smaller than the outer shell because of this (that's okay).
Why not double strand the inner shell too? Well, you can but that would be a 4 weight + 4 weight yarn and the outer shell is a 4 weight + 2 weight, so the inner shell will end up bigger.

Once the outer shell is made,do not fasten off the yarn, instead sc together the inner and outer shell. Make sure the fluffiest side of the shell is facing out. Once the shell is crocheted together fasten off and weave in any ends.
Repeat making the inner and outer shell for the other side of the chestnut.
If you want to sew the 2 shells together, you can! Just sew 10-12 stitches together. Then you can add a chestnut to the middle to make it look like it is peaking out!
And there you have it! The crochet chestnut pattern is done! I hope you had a fun time making the pattern as I did! And if you are looking for some more fun crochet fall patterns check out my crochet fall garland pattern and crochet acorn bag pattern.

🐌Expert Tips
- Try making invisible decreases in the crochet chestnut pattern to make your decreases less visible. To make one, go through the front loop of the 2 stitches you want to decrease and leave the back loop alone. Yarn over and pull through the loops to finish off the stitch.
- If you want more expressive eyes, try using bigger safety eyes and add a little white embroidery line to the side of the eyes.
- Before placing the eyes, try and flatten the chestnut out and visualize where you want the eyes to be placed then place the safety eyes and double check you like the placing before putting the backs on.
- Because the crochet chestnut pattern is made in the round, try using stitch markers so you know where the rounds begin and end.
🧵Pattern FAQs
If you are wanting to make the chestnut shell, yes. It creates the hairlike spikes that chestnut shells have, otherwise you can crochet something similar that has texture using just worsted yarn, but it will not look the same.
Absolutely! It is a great size for a keychain pal, just add the chain to the top of the chestnut.
You don’t have to have the exact brands of yarn that I have to make this. You just want a nice buff/beige color for the bottom and a warm medium brown for the top of the chestnut. Any lighter more muted green tones can work for the shell.
