What better way to show off your love for books than with my Crochet Love Letter Book Sleeve? It also can keep your Kindle protected!

Sewn heart to the top edge of the book sleeve.

Show your love for books with my Crochet Kindle Cover! This charming creation isn't just for traditional books—it’s also perfect for protecting your Kindle. Whether you're into physical books or e-books, this crochet pattern makes an ideal Kindle cover or book sleeve.

As an avid reader with an ever-growing pile of “must-read” books, I’ve found this book sleeve to be a lifesaver. Most of my books fit perfectly inside, and it shields them from everyday wear and tear caused by being tossed around in my bag. The soft, crocheted fabric provides an extra layer of protection while keeping your books safe and stylish.

What I love most about this sleeve is its poetic touch. The design resembles a love letter envelope, and when you place a book inside, it feels like the book itself is a love letter waiting to be discovered. It’s a beautiful, personal way to safeguard your literary treasures and express your passion for reading.

This crochet book sleeve is more than just a functional accessory—it’s a thoughtful and meaningful way to protect your books while adding a touch of charm to your reading experience. Whether you’re an avid reader or someone who loves gifting handmade creations, this book sleeve is the perfect addition to any book lover’s collection.

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Adjustable Size: This pattern is designed to fit most smaller books and Kindles, but it can easily be adjusted to accommodate larger books if needed. Simply modify the starting chain length and add extra rows to achieve your desired size. This flexibility makes it a versatile pattern for a variety of devices and books.
    2. Stitch Options: While I used double crochet (dc) for this pattern, you can opt for a different stitch depending on your preference for a tighter or looser fabric. If you prefer a denser, firmer texture, try using half double crochet (hdc) or single crochet (sc) instead of double crochet. Keep in mind that switching stitches may require you to add or subtract rows to maintain the correct size.
    3. Width of the Sleeve: TThe finished crochet kindle cover or book sleeve measures approximately 7 inches in width. If you need the sleeve to be wider or narrower, adjust the starting chain length accordingly to match your book or device’s dimensions. By customizing the width and stitch choice, you can create a perfectly sized sleeve to protect your reading materials, whether they’re larger or smaller than the standard fit.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Red Heart Red Yarn
    • Red Heart White Yarn
    • 5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Chains - ch
    • Double Crochet - dc
    • Magic Ring - mr
    • Slip Stitch - sl st
    • Triple Crochet - tr
    • Half Double Crochet - hdc

    🧋Variations

While I left my crochet love letter plain and simple, you can add extra adornments to the pattern if you like! Like a border on the exposed crochet edge, or maybe switching out the double crochet stitch with a more textural stitch like the sedge stitch or crunch stitch.

🍵Instructions for Crochet Love Letter Book Sleeve

    Crochet Envelope:

Finished crochet chain for the crochet book sleeve.

Row 1: Ch x27 and turn.

First double crochet in the second row.

Row 2: In the third chain from the hook, make a dc.

    Finished second row.

Continue making double crochets in each chain for the rest of the row (25). Ch x2 and turn. (Do not crochet in the turning chains, they simply help you turn your work to the other side, never work in them)

Finished rectangle for the crochet kindle sleeve.

Row 3-23: Dc in each available stitch (25) Double check that your book or kindle can fit the sleeve by folding it into 3rds. It should wrap around your device or book fully on the front and back and then halfway only halfway on the third section.

Sew the sides of the sleeve with a little bit of overhang.

Fold your white rectangle into thirds (or near thirds). You want to make sure that 2 of the 3 sections cover the book or kindle, and then the last section only goes down about halfway over the front.

Sew the sides of the sleeve with a little bit of overhang.

Once you fold it the way you want it, sew the sides shut, do not sew the top flap of the envelope to the base. You want to be able to lift it open.

    Crochet Heart Pattern:

This pattern is made in rounds.

Crochet magic circle with double crochets.

Round 1: Make a mr loop, ch x2 then dc x15 inside of the ring. Sl st to the top of the 1st dc you made and then pull the mr tail tight.

Chaining 2 from the first round.

    Round 2: Ch x2

One part of the heart is finished.

and then dc into the same stitch. Make 4tr into the next stitch.

The side of the heart is finished.

     2dc into the following stitch

Starting the point of the heart.

and then make a hdc in each of the next 4 stitches.

Now we are at the bottom of the heart:

Dc, tr, dc in the next stitch (this will help create the point on the hearts bottom as well as help you turn to the other side

    Finished crochet heart.

    Other side of the heart:

Hdc into the next 4 stitches, 2dc into the following stitch, 4tr into the next stitch, dc into the next stitch. Then ch x2 and sl st into the same stitch.

You should now have a heart shape. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Next, take the crocheted heart you’ve created and sew it securely to the center of the front flap of your book sleeve. This will give your sleeve a lovely, personal touch. Be sure to align the heart properly, ensuring it sits in the middle for a balanced look.

Once the heart is in place, carefully weave in any loose yarn ends from both the heart and the rest of the sleeve. You can do this by threading the loose ends into a yarn needle and weaving them through the stitches on the inside of the sleeve. This will help to prevent the yarn from unraveling and keep the finish neat.

After securing the heart and weaving in all the loose ends, your crochet book sleeve or crochet Kindle cover is now complete! You've created a beautifully functional accessory, perfect for protecting your books or Kindle in style.

Whether you made this project for yourself or as a gift, it's sure to be a thoughtful, handmade item that adds a personal touch to your reading experience. Enjoy your cozy, crochet creation!

Sewn heart to the top edge of the book sleeve.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Keep Edges Neat: Since this is a flat pattern project, there is no right or wrong side until after you sew it. Ensure that the sewn edges are on the inside for a cleaner look.
    • Customize Fit: If you are using different yarn weights or sizes, be sure to measure and adjust the chain length and number of rows to ensure a perfect fit.
    • Add Texture: Experiment with textured yarns or variegated colors to add more visual appeal. You can also try alternating between regular and textured stitches for a unique look.
    • Make It a Gift: Personalize the sleeve by embroidering initials, adding decorative buttons, or attaching small crochet appliqués, like flowers or stars, for a lovely gift idea.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

    Can I use chunky yarn?

Absolutely! It will add a bit of cushion for extra protection. Just adjust the chain length at the beginning, otherwise, it will be too big.

Can I add a border to the sleeve?

Yes, you can! The best time to add a border is after constructing the envelope but before adding the heart.

What kind of borders would look best with this?

Try the candy cane stripe, crab stitch, or a shell stitch border for a cute, polished finish!
