Make yourself a cuddly crochet snowman this year with my easy and free crochet snowman pattern! I promise you this snowman won't melt away in the comfort of a warm home!

Finished crochet snowman with blue background.

Do you wanna build a snowman? I know I do! It may be too early for snow, but thatโ€™s not going to stop me! Besides, the cold never bothered me anyway! Luckily for this snowman amigurumi I donโ€™t have to get cold, I can make the cute crochet snowman pattern in the comfort of my own warm home, and he wonโ€™t melt away!

I started making my crochet Christmas/winter patterns in October this year which to some may be a little late in the season because people plan their holiday crochet projects months in advance! But I am so glad I got to make this crochet snowman pattern and I even made a crochet Santa pattern with leftover yarn!

Traditionally, I use size 4 yarn for all of my projects but recently I keep diving into size 5 and 6 chunky yarns! I love how squishy they feel and how fast crochet projects can work up when using them. Like my crochet tempura shrimp pattern only took an hour or two to make, just like this snowman!

Now let's learn how to crochet a snowman!

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn: I made the crochet snowman pattern using BOTH size 4 and 5 yarn. I made the snowman amigurumi in Bernat Baby Blanket size 5 yarn and the rest in Red Heart size 4 yarn. You will need both yarns. If you are using only chunky/worsted weight the hat and scarf will be the wrong size so adjust the sizing accordingly.
    2. Crochet Level: The chunky yarn I used is not smooth, giving it a nice fluffy/snow/like appearance. Due to this it is very hard to see the stitches and I do not recommend a beginner make this pattern. Intermediate+ who is used to working in fluffy yarn can easily make this.
    3. Size: The crochet snowman pattern makes an 18inch snowman when finished.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn- white - half the skein
    • Red Heart - paddy green -5 yards
    • Red Heart - black - 20 yards
    • Red Heart - cherry red - 1 yard
    • Red Heart - pumpkin - 3 yards
    • Polyfill
    • Tapestry needle
    • 6mm hook
    • 4mm hook
    • Safety Eyes - 8mm, 14mm and 18mm

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring - mr
    • Chain - ch
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Front loop only - flo
    • Back loop only - blo
    • Increase - inc
    • Decrease - dec
    • Slip stitch - sl st
    • Special stitch - crab stitch

    ๐ŸตInstructions for Crochet Snowman Pattern

The cute crochet snowman pattern will be made in rounds.

    Crochet Snowman:

    Crochet snowman body.
    Crochet snowman body and head.

Round 22: In flo โ€”inc, sc x4. Then repeat for the rest of the round (36).

Round 23: Inc, sc x5. Then repeat for the rest of the round (42).

Round 30: Dec, sc x5. Then repeat for the rest of the round (36).

Round 31: Dec, sc x4. Then repeat for the rest of the round (30).

Round 32: Dec, sc x3. Then repeat for the rest of the round (24). If you haven't already, add the eyes and mouth. You can move the eyes and mouth as you see fit, but for my eyes I used 14mm safety eyes, and placed them between rounds 23-24, with 5 spaces between the eyes. The mouth uses 5x 8mm safety eyes below the eyes in a curve to form a smile.

Round 33: Dec, sc x2. Then repeat for the rest of the round (18).

Round 34: Dec, sc. Then repeat for the rest of the round (12).

Round 35: Dec in every stitch (6). Fasten off, sew the hole at the top shut and weave in the ends.

THE REST OF THE PATTERN USES A 4MM HOOK.

Round 4: Inc, sc. Then repeat for the rest of the round (9). Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

    Crochet Scarf:

    Crochet mini red scarf.

Row 1: With the red yarn and a 4mm hook, ch x90. Then in the 3rd ch from the hook make a dc. Continue making dcโ€™s for the rest of the chain length (88). Ch x2 and turn.

Row 2-3: Dc in every stitch. At the end of the row, ch x2. For the last row dont ch x2 at the end, just fasten off. Then weave in any tails.

    Crochet Hat:

    Crochet snowman hat.

Round 1: With the 4mm hook and black yarn, make a mr and sc x8 into the circle. Then pull tight.

Round 2: Inc in every stitch (16).

Round 4: Inc, sc x2. Then repeat for the rest of the round (32).

    Round 5: In blo, sc x32 (32).

Round 6: Dec, sc x6. Then repeat for the rest of the round (28).

Round 13: Ch x1, then do the crab stitch for this round.

*Crab stitch: Insert your hook into the next stitch to the RIGHT. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. Repeat from *.

    Crochet Holly Leaf and Berries:

    Crochet holly leaf and berries.

Holly Leaf: With the 4mm hook and green yarn, ch x6. Make a sl st in the second chain from the hook. Then *sl st, ch x2, and sl st to the same stitch you made the last slip stitch in.

Sl st in the next stitch*. Repeat from* to *.

Sl st, ch, sl st in the last chain. Then turn to the unworked side of the chain.

Repeat from * to* x2. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

    Make x2.

Holly Berry: With the 4mm hook and red yarn, ch x2. Then in the second ch from the hook sc x3. Sl st to the first sc, pull tight and fasten off. Leave a tail for sewing.

Sewing: Sew the holly leaves and berries to the base of the hat, then stuff the hat and sew the hat to the top of the snowman's head at an angle. Then sew the carrot nose to the snowmanโ€™s face between the eyes.

I did not sew the scarf to the snowman, but tied it on instead.

And now you have a finished snowman amigurumi made from my free crochet snowman pattern! I hope you enjoyed this cute crochet snowman pattern!

If you have leftover yarn you can also make my crochet mitten ornament pattern, crochet mini Christmas stocking pattern which are both perfect for holding candy canes. If you have a lot of red and some fluffy yarn leftover, you can make my pattern for a Christmas tree skirt.

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Try not to over stuff the snowman, if you over stuff the plush it can get warped and lumpy.
    • If you are crocheting too loosely and holes are appearing in your work - go down a hook size. It should minimize the holes.
    • If you are having trouble placing the safety eyes for the crochet snowman pattern, switch to buttons or circles of felt and glue them on with hot glue.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

Is the crochet snowman pattern easy for beginners?

While the stitches are easy, seeing the stitches is hard because of the fluffy yarn. I suggest this pattern should be made by intermediate or advanced beginners.

I don't have access to Bernat Blanket Yarn, what can I use for the crochet snowman pattern?

Any white size 5 yarn should work.

How do I wash the crochet snowman pattern?

Spot cleaning and air drying is best, but you can wash on delicate with cold water and a laundry bag to protect the toy. Then air dry.
