If you're anything like me, you probably have a basket (or five) of yarn scraps just waiting to become something useful, why not make my crochet granny square coaster pattern! Just make sure that they are cotton yarn scraps!

    Finished granny square coasters.

This colorful granny square coaster crochet pattern uses the classic granny cluster stitch of making 3 double crochets in every little window made from the previous round, and you switch up your yarn color every row for a bold pop (but you can keep it all one color if you want!). To finish off the coaster, you make a round of single crochets so that the coaster keeps its shape easier. It also creates a cute finished edge which gives the granny square a more polished look.

Itโ€™s great for using up scraps and works up in no time, especially if you're already familiar with granny squares. I love using up my scrap yarn, and if you have extra scraps after this project, you can make my crochet popsicle holder pattern and my crochet ice cream cozy pattern!

Whether you're looking for an easy crochet coaster for your morning coffee or a thoughtful, handmade gift for a friend, this crochet square coaster pattern might just become your new go-to.

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. The Popularity of the Granny Square: Granny squares have been around since the early 1800s and became wildly popular in the 1970s. Their beauty lies in their versatility: you can stitch them into blankets (like my granny square baby blanket pattern), bags (like my crochet lemon bag pattern and my crochet backpack pattern), garments, and of course - these coasters!
    2. Design: This square crochet coaster pattern follows the classic cluster-style granny square. If you're brand new to granny squares and wondering how to crochet a square coaster for beginners, don't worryโ€”this is a gentle and satisfying way to learn. Youโ€™ll get to practice working in the round, changing colors, and finishing neatly.
    3. Size: The crochet square coaster pattern is roughly 4.5-5 inches wide.

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

One of the best parts about this pattern is how customizable it is. Here are a few ideas:

    • Monochrome: Use the same color for all rounds and just add a contrasting color for the final single crochet border.
    • Themed sets: Create color-themed sets for holidays, seasons, or personal preferences.
    • Mix & match: Pair them with other granny square projects like my crochet sun granny square pattern, crochet moon granny square pattern, or crochet lemon granny square pattern to create a matching set!

๐ŸตInstructions for Crochet Granny Square Coaster Pattern

For the crochet granny square coaster pattern, we will be working in the round:

First round of a granny square.

Round 1: With color A, make a magic ring and then ch x3 (counts as a dc) and dc x2 into the mr. After, * ch x2 and then dc x3 into the circle. Repeat from * 2 more times, then ch x2 and connect to the top of the ch x3 you made at the beginning by making a sl st, pull tight and fasten off.ย

Second round of a granny square.

Round 2: Join color B in any ch x2 space from the round before. Ch x3, then dc x2, ch x2, and dc x3 into that corner space. *Dc x3, ch x2, dc x3 into the next corner space and repeat from * 2 more times. Then sl st to the beginning chains and fasten off the yarn.

Third round of a granny square.

Round 3: Join color C in any ch x2 space from the round below. Ch x3, then dc x2, ch x2, and dc x3 into that corner space. *Then dc x3 in the next space between the 2 corner clusters from the round below. Then in the corner space - dc x3, ch x2 and dc x3. Repeat from * 2 more times, then dc x3 in that last space  before the first corner. Then sl st to the beginning chains and fasten off.

Fourth round of a granny square.

Round 4: Join color D in any ch x2 space from the round below. At this point you want to repeat round 3, but add an extra cluster of 3 dc on the side. At the end, sl st to the beginning chains and fasten off.

Last round of the granny square crochet coaster pattern.

Round 5: Join the white yarn in any stitch and sc the complete edge of the square into the tops of the dc stitches. When you get to the corners, sc x3. Then when you are done sl st to the first sc in the round.

And now your crochet granny square is done!

If you're in need of a thoughtful, handmade gift or a small project to whip up between larger makes, this crochet granny square coaster is a delightful choice. It's simple, fast, and endlessly customizable. Plus, you'll finally have a use for all those colorful little yarn bits you couldn't part with.

Pair a set with a mug and some tea, and youโ€™ve got an easy, heartfelt present. Or keep a stack by your own coffee tableโ€”theyโ€™re just too cute not to use!

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Use a smaller hook than usual to keep your coasters sturdy and flatโ€”no one likes a floppy coaster!
    • Block your coasters for a clean, polished look. It only takes a minute but makes a huge difference.
    • Weave in ends as you go if you're changing colors every round. Trust me, future-you will thank you.
    • Stash buster alert: This is the perfect project for those tiny yarn scraps.

Absolutely! I suggest chaining 5, and slip stitch together to form a ring.
