โ๏ธ Things To Note:
- Use Scrap Yarn: Although you could use new skeins for the crochet heart coaster pattern, itโs also a great project for scrap yarn since the hearts are small and use minimal yarn. Just make sure to use cotton, as acrylic isnโt water-absorbent.
- Recommended Yarn Weight: I used worsted weight yarn for this project. Avoid thick yarns like chunky yarns, as they can make your cup unstable.
- Size: A crochet heart coaster without frills is no bigger than 4.5 inches.

๐ตInstructions for Crochet Heart Coaster Pattern
The crochet heart coaster pattern is made in rows.

Row 1: Ch x11, then turn.
Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, make a sc. Then sc x8 for the rest of the row (except the last chain). In the last ch make an inc. Ch x1 and turn.
Do not work in the turning chain, it's just there to help you turn to the next row.
Row 3: Inc, then make a sc in every stitch for the rest of the row. (12) Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 4-7: Sc in every stitch (12). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 8: Sc x10, then make a dec for the last 2 stitches. Then ch x1 and turn (11).
Row 9: Dec, then sc x9 for the rest of the row. Then ch x1 and turn (10).
Row 10: Sc x7 (7). Then ch x1 and turn.
This row is where we start making the second side of the heart, you do not want to go completely across, only half across.
Row 11-12: Sc in every stitch (7). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 13: Dec, sc x3, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (5).
Row 14: Dec, sc x1, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (3). Now your heart is done.

If you want a cleaner edge, single crochet around the outside of the crochet heart coaster.
When you get to the center of the top of the heart make a sl st a full row down (a spike slip stitch) then proceed like normal for the rest of the heart until you reach the bottom point.
When you get to the bottom of the heart, sc, ch, sc, in the same stitch at the very tip.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional shell border:

Join white cotton yarn (or any color) to the edge of the heart.
Then *in the next stitch make 3 hdc stitches. And then a sl st in the next.
Repeat from* for the rest of the round.

At the top of the heart, make a sl st into the sl st you made from the previous round.
Then sl st in the next stitch, make 3 hdc stitches in the next stitch and proceed like you did earlier for the side of the heart.

Try and make the bottom of the heart have a nice shell at the bottom so it has a tip. This can be fudged a bit if you don't have enough stitches to work in, as you can always do a sl st in the same stitch as the hdc stitches or where you joined the white yarn at the beginning.
And now your fancy crochet heart coaster is done!
If you have any leftover cotton yarn, you can make a few more of my coaster designs! My colorful crochet donut coasters can be easily made if you used pastel or bright cotton yarns for the heart coasters.
You can also make any of my flower coaster designs like my 6 petal crochet flower pattern and my crochet daisy coaster.

๐Expert Tips
- Perfecting the Heart Shape: When crocheting around the edge, make a spike slip stitch at the top indent, and a sc, ch, sc at the bottom tip to enhance the heartโs shape.
- Yarn Choice Matters: Always use cotton for coasters, as they absorb moisture. Acrylic yarn is not recommended since it doesnโt absorb water and may become slippery.
๐งตPattern FAQs
Itโs not recommended because chunky yarns add extra cushion, which can make cups unstable.
Absolutely! It also uses minimal materials, so if you make a mistake, thereโs not much yarn waste. The shell border might be a bit advanced for beginners, but you can still create cute heart coasters without it.
I highly suggest avoiding acrylic for coasters because it isnโt good at retaining heat and doesnโt absorb water. Cotton or wool yarn is your best bet.

I love the heart shape coaster! Would love to make it a couple rounds bigger, would be really happy if you could help ๐ thank you ~

my crochet chicken potholder pattern is a larger version of the heart coaster pattern ๐ https://thecaffeinatedsnail.com/crochet-chicken-potholder-pattern/

What a nice pattern - thank you so much! I made one modification - at the top of the heart, instead of a shell, slip stitch, shell, I did a single HDC, SL ST, single HDC. I felt it helped it lay a little flatter where the heart curved down.
I used Lily's Sugar 'n Cream in Black Currant for the heart and for the shell stitch, I used Premier Home Cotton (85% cotton, 15% polyester) in the Fruity Speckle. It turned out just darling!

Thank you for making this pattern! How did you go from 10 stitches in round 9 to 7 stitches in round 10? Not sure how to continue from here ๐
Kimberly Arenas says
Hi, although there is 10 stitches for the entirety of the row, you only crochet in 7 of them. Then ch x1 and turn. It will create the second top bump of the crochet heart. You do not work in the last 3 remaining stitches in the row.
Amy says
I would love to make this bigger to use as a hotpad. Would you be able to adjust the pattern to make it about 8-10"?
Thanks!
Kimberly Arenas says
I am hoping to make a larger version for a potholder soon, but my crochet chicken potholder uses a heart shape as the base and you can modify that to make it look like a heart with frills ๐
