✏️ Things To Note:
- Use Scrap Yarn: Although you could use new skeins for this pattern, it’s also a great project for scrap yarn since the hearts are small and use minimal yarn. Just make sure to use cotton, as acrylic isn’t water-absorbent.
- Recommended Yarn Weight: I used worsted weight yarn for this project. Avoid thick yarns like chunky yarns, as they can make your cup unstable.
- Size: A crochet heart coaster without frills is no bigger than 4 inches.
🪡 Materials Needed

🍵Instructions for Crochet Heart Coasters
This pattern is made in rows.
Row 1: Ch x11, then turn.
Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, make a sc. Then sc x8 for the rest of the row (except the last chain). In the last ch make an inc. Ch x1 and turn.
Do not work in the turning chain, it's just there to help you turn to the next row.
Row 3: Inc, then make a sc in every stitch for the rest of the row. (12) Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 4-7: Sc in every stitch (12). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 8: Sc x10, then make a dec for the last 2 stitches. Then ch x1 and turn (11).
Row 9: Dec, then sc x9 for the rest of the row. Then ch x1 and turn (10).
Row 10: Sc x7 (7). Then ch x1 and turn.
This row is where we start making the second side of the heart, you do not want to go completely across, only half across.
Row 11-12: Sc in every stitch (7). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 13: Dec, sc x3, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (5).
Row 14: Dec, sc x1, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (3). Now your heart is done.
If you want a cleaner edge, single crochet around the edge.
When you get to the center of the top of the heart, make a decrease so the point is more defined, then when you get to the bottom tip of the heart, sc, ch, sc, in the same space at the very tip.
Weave your thread to the center of the heart, right where the yarn is sticking out on my picture, then loop around the top of the heart indent so the needle goes through the backside. Make sure the needle is going in downwards motion going down through the stitches.
Pull tight and the indent is more visible.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional shell border:
Join white cotton yarn (or any color) to the edge of the heart.
Then skip a stitch and make 6 dcs in one stitch.
Next skip a stitch and then make a slip stitch.
You just made a shell stitch. Repeat for the rest of the heart's edge. If the shells don’t fit perfectly you can always fudge the shell border by squeezing some of the shells together.
A tip: when you get to the top indent of the heart, slip stitch the middle 3 stitches before moving on to the next shell stitch.
And now your fancy crochet heart coaster is done!
If you have any leftover cotton yarn, you can make a few more of my coaster designs! My colorful crochet donut coasters can be easily made if you used pastel or bright cotton yarns for the heart coasters.
You can also make any of my flower coaster designs like my 6 petal crochet flower pattern and my crochet daisy coaster.
🐌Expert Tips
- Perfecting the Heart Shape: When crocheting around the edge, make a decrease at the top indent, and a sc, ch, sc at the bottom tip to enhance the heart’s shape.
- Yarn Choice Matters: Always use cotton or wool yarn for coasters, as they absorb moisture. Acrylic yarn is not recommended since it doesn’t absorb water and may become slippery.
🧵Pattern FAQs
It’s not recommended because chunky yarns add extra cushion, which can make cups unstable.
Absolutely! It also uses minimal materials, so if you make a mistake, there’s not much yarn waste. The shell border might be a bit advanced for beginners, but you can still create cute heart coasters without it.
I highly suggest avoiding acrylic for coasters because it isn’t good at retaining heat and doesn’t absorb water. Cotton or wool yarn is your best bet.

Thank you for making this pattern! How did you go from 10 stitches in round 9 to 7 stitches in round 10? Not sure how to continue from here 🙁

Hi, although there is 10 stitches for the entirety of the row, you only crochet in 7 of them. Then ch x1 and turn. It will create the second top bump of the crochet heart. You do not work in the last 3 remaining stitches in the row.
