Add a bit of love and decoration to your home with a crochet heart coaster on your desk or coffee table. My Crochet Heart Coaster Pattern is made in rows, making it easy to create without the need for a magic circle.

    Finished crochet heart coasters.

This crochet heart coaster pattern is very simple. You don’t even need to know how to make a magic ring! These crochet heart coasters are made using just chains and single crochets, making it especially easy for beginners. You can also test your skills by adding a frilly shell border to the edge, but that is completely optional!

These crochet Valentine’s Day heart coasters can be given as Valentine's Day gifts, a thoughtful present for a loved one, or used as a cute decoration for your daily cup of coffee.

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Use Scrap Yarn: Although you could use new skeins for the crochet heart coaster pattern, it’s also a great project for scrap yarn since the hearts are small and use minimal yarn. Just make sure to use cotton, as acrylic isn’t water-absorbent.
    2. Recommended Yarn Weight: I used worsted weight yarn for this project. Avoid thick yarns like chunky yarns, as they can make your cup unstable.
    3. Size: A crochet heart coaster without frills is no bigger than 4 inches.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Lily Sugar n Cream cotton yarn
    • Tapestry needle
    • 4.5mm hook

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Single crochet - sc
    • Chain - ch
    • Increase- inc
    • Decrease - dec
    • Double Crochet - dc (optional-for the shell border)

    🧋Variations

    • Change the colors freely, add a shell border, or a lacy edge.
    • Make them into conversation hearts by embroidering words on top!

    🍵Instructions for Crochet Heart Coasters

This pattern is made in rows.

    Crochet chain for heart coaster.

Row 1: Ch x11, then turn.

    Second row for heart coaster.

Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, make a sc. Then sc x8 for the rest of the row (except the last chain). In the last ch make an inc. Ch x1 and turn.

Do not work in the turning chain, it's just there to help you turn to the next row.

    Third row for heart coaster.

Row 3: Inc, then make a sc in every stitch for the rest of the row. (12) Then ch x1 and turn.

    Finished half of the heart.

Row 4-7: Sc in every stitch (12). Then ch x1 and turn.

    Finished half of the heart.

Row 8: Sc x10, then make a dec for the last 2 stitches. Then ch x1 and turn (11).

    Finished half of the heart.

Row 9: Dec, then sc x9 for the rest of the row. Then ch x1 and turn (10).

Start of the second heart top.

Row 10: Sc x7 (7). Then ch x1 and turn.

This row is where we start making the second side of the heart, you do not want to go completely across, only half across.

    Second heart top midway done.

Row 11-12: Sc in every stitch (7). Then ch x1 and turn.

Row 13:  Dec, sc x3, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (5).

    Finished crochet heart.

Row 14: Dec, sc x1, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (3). Now your heart is done.

Crochet around the edge of the heart.

If you want a cleaner edge, single crochet around the edge.

When you get to the center of the top of the heart, make a decrease so the point is more defined, then when you get to the bottom tip of the heart, sc, ch, sc, in the same space at the very tip.

Crochet around the edge of the heart.

Weave your thread to the center of the heart, right where the yarn is sticking out on my picture, then loop around the top of the heart indent so the needle goes through the backside. Make sure the needle is going in downwards motion going down through the stitches.

Crochet around the edge of the heart.

Pull tight and the indent is more visible.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Optional shell border:

Start of crochet shell border for the heart coaster.

Join white cotton yarn (or any color) to the edge of the heart.

Start of crochet shell border for the heart coaster.

Then skip a stitch and make 6 dcs in one stitch.

Start of crochet shell border for the heart coaster.

Next skip a stitch and then make a slip stitch.

You just made a shell stitch. Repeat for the rest of the heart's edge. If the shells don’t fit perfectly you can always fudge the shell border by squeezing some of the shells together.

Showing how the top indent looks with the shell border.

A tip: when you get to the top indent of the heart, slip stitch the middle 3 stitches before moving on to the next shell stitch.

And now your fancy crochet heart coaster is done!

If you have any leftover cotton yarn, you can make a few more of my coaster designs! My colorful crochet donut coasters can be easily made if you used pastel or bright cotton yarns for the heart coasters.

You can also make any of my flower coaster designs like my 6 petal crochet flower pattern and my crochet daisy coaster.

    Finished crochet heart coaster.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Perfecting the Heart Shape: When crocheting around the edge, make a decrease at the top indent, and a sc, ch, sc at the bottom tip to enhance the heart’s shape.
    • Yarn Choice Matters: Always use cotton or wool yarn for coasters, as they absorb moisture. Acrylic yarn is not recommended since it doesn’t absorb water and may become slippery.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

Can I use chunky yarn for this project?

It’s not recommended because chunky yarns add extra cushion, which can make cups unstable.

Is the crochet heart coaster beginner friendly?

Absolutely! It also uses minimal materials, so if you make a mistake, there’s not much yarn waste. The shell border might be a bit advanced for beginners, but you can still create cute heart coasters without it.

    Can I use acrylic yarn?

I highly suggest avoiding acrylic for coasters because it isn’t good at retaining heat and doesn’t absorb water. Cotton or wool yarn is your best bet.

Thank you for making this pattern! How did you go from 10 stitches in round 9 to 7 stitches in round 10? Not sure how to continue from here 🙁

Hi, although there is 10 stitches for the entirety of the row, you only crochet in 7 of them. Then ch x1 and turn. It will create the second top bump of the crochet heart. You do not work in the last 3 remaining stitches in the row.
