Use cotton yarn for the crochet bear pattern; acrylic can be used for a cute bear or teddy bear applique for non-absorbent items.
This pattern is great for beginners, as it’s worked in the round with only 4 rounds.
It’s a simple circle pattern until the bear elements are added in the last round.
The finished bear coaster is about 4.5 inches wide; adjust the hook size for different dimensions.
You can easily switch the yarn color of the bear to create black bears, brown bears, or polar bears for your crochet coasters.
Instructions
This pattern is made in rounds.
Round 1: Using the jute yarn, make a magic ring and ch x2 (does not count as a stitch). Then dc x12 into the magic ring. To secure the round, sl st to the 1st dc in the round (12). Fasten off the jute yarn and switch it to brown yarn.
Round 2: Ch x2, then dc inc in every stitch from the previous round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (24).
Round 3: Ch x2, then dc inc, dc and repeat for the rest of the round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (36).
Round 4: This is the last round for the crochet bear coaster and will help create its overall shape.
Sc, sl st, then we are making the first ear. Skip a stitch and then in 1 stitch: dc, tr x4, and dc. Then skip the next stitch and immediately make a sl st in the following stitch. Sl x5 along the next 5 stitches.
Then we are going to make another ear. Skip a stitch and then in 1 stitch: dc, tr x4, and dc. Then skip the next stitch and immediately make a sl st in the following stitch. After anchoring the ear follow the rest of the round:
Sc, sc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, hdc inc, sc x6, hdc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, sc inc, sl st to 1st sc in the round and fasten off. Then weave in any loose ends.
Embroidery:
Using the black yarn make little eyes on opposite sides of the tan circle (preferably in round 2) and then make an embroidered triangle nose in the top half of the tan circle from round 1. Make sure the embroidery isn't too thick so the coaster lets cups lay flat and not wobble around.
And now your crochet bear coaster is done!
Tips: If you want the back of the coaster to be less messy from the embroidery, slide the yarn underneath the stitches on the back of the coaster until you get to the next embroidery spot so it is less noticeable on the back. Just make sure the yarn doesn't show on the front.
