The Grit Stitch Crochet Pattern, also known as the lemon peel crochet stitch or the crochet seed stitch, is an easy stitch to learn if you know the crochet basics! All you need to know is how to make single and double crochet stitches.

    Finished grit stitch dishcloth.

I personally refer to it as the grit stitch because it creates a textured surface that helps remove grit and grime from dishes when used as a dishcloth. Heavily textured crochet stitches are perfect for creating crochet dishcloths and washcloths.

Some of my favorites, besides the lemon peel stitch, are the Crochet Crunch Stitch, the Crochet Wattle Stitch Pattern, and the Suzette Stitch Crochet Pattern. All of these unique stitches can create a lovely housewarming gift.

Another great gift idea is to pair a grit stitch dishcloth with my Crochet Spa Set for a thoughtful last-minute housewarming present.

    1. Yarn Choice: I used Lily Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn to create the crochet lemon peel stitch dishcloth. While any yarn can work for a crochet stitch swatch, cotton is the best choice for dishcloths and washcloths. In addition to dishcloths, you can also make a Crochet Grit Stitch Blanket Pattern which makes a wonderful gifts!
    2. Versatility: This pattern can be used to create a washcloth, dishcloth, or even a blanket by adjusting the chain size! Itโ€™s easy and works up quickly, making it suitable for various projects.
    3. Finished Size: The finished size is roughly 8 inches x 8 inches.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • 1 ball of light yellow Sugar n Cream cotton yarn
    • H hook (5mm)
    • Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends

๐Ÿ’ญ Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms)

    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Chains (ch)
    • Double crochet (dc)

    ๐Ÿง‹ Variations

Color Options: Try different colors to create a variety of washcloths!

Project Sizes: Adjust the chain length to make larger items like blankets, or, if you're advanced enough, a textured sweater.

๐Ÿต Instructions for the Grit Stitch Crochet Pattern

The grit stitch crochet pattern is made in rows.

    Starting chain for crochet dishcloth.

Row 1: Using light yellow cotton yarn, ch x30 +1 for the turning ch. (30 +1)

    Or any multiple of 2 + 1.

    Double crochet for second stitch.

Row 2: Starting in the second chain from the hook make a sc. Then a dc in the next stitch.

Crochet lemon peel stitch row done.
Second row: single and double crochet.

The grit stitch is made alternating single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) stitches.

Repeat the process of alternating sc, dc for the rest of the row. The last stitch in the row should be a dc. Then ch x1 and turn. The ch is a turning ch so do not work in it. Skip over it in the next row and go directly to the last stitch worked. (30)

Row 3-24: Make a sc on top of the last rows dc, and a dc over the last sc. Repeat that for the rest of the row. Then ch x1 and turn (30). When all the rows are complete, fasten off and weave in the tail.

Alternatively, when all rows are completed you can crochet along the edge for a cleaner finish.

    Start of next row.

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Use Quality Cotton Yarn: When making dishcloths, it's essential to use quality cotton yarn for better absorbency and durability. Cotton is naturally highly absorbent, making it perfect for tasks like dishwashing and cleaning. Choosing a good-quality yarn ensures your dishcloth will last longer, handle frequent use, and maintain its shape over time.
    • Practice Makes Perfect: If you're new to the grit stitch, remember that practice makes perfect. Start by making a larger swatch to get comfortable with the stitch alternation before tackling a full project. The more you practice, the more confident youโ€™ll become with the stitch pattern.
    • Experiment with Stitches: Donโ€™t be afraid to experiment with different crochet techniques. Mixing the grit stitch with other stitches or textures can add variety and originality to your projects. Whether you combine it with clusters, shells, or other motifs, experimenting allows you to create unique patterns that will make your dishcloths and other crochet items stand out. Let your creativity flow!

    ๐Ÿงต Pattern FAQs

Is the grit stitch a good stitch to make a blanket?

Yes! It is easy to mindlessly do so you can easily make a crochet blanket while watching your favorite TV shows.

What if my first row ended with a sc and not a dc?

This indicates that you had an incorrect number of chains at the beginning. Since this is a small project, you can easily frog it, add an extra chain, and return to the next row.

What does it mean to frog something?

It means to rip out a row or round. The term "frog" is used because it sounds similar to "ribbit," representing the act of "ripping it" in a project.
