The Grit Stitch Crochet Pattern, also known as the lemon peel crochet stitch or the crochet seed stitch, is an easy stitch to learn if you know the crochet basics! All you need to know is how to make single and double crochet stitches.
Yarn Choice: I used Lily Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn to create the crochet lemon peel stitch dishcloth. While any yarn can work for a crochet stitch swatch, cotton is the best choice for dishcloths and washcloths. In addition to dishcloths, you can also make a Crochet Grit Stitch Blanket Pattern which makes a wonderful gifts!
Versatility: This pattern can be used to create a washcloth, dishcloth, or even a blanket by adjusting the chain size! It’s easy and works up quickly, making it suitable for various projects.
Finished Size: The finished size is roughly 8 inches x 8 inches.
Instructions
The grit stitch crochet pattern is made in rows.
Row 1: Using light yellow cotton yarn, ch x30 +1 for the turning ch. (30 +1)
Or any multiple of 2 + 1.
Row 2: Starting in the second chain from the hook make a sc. Then a dc in the next stitch.
The grit stitch is made alternating single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) stitches.
Repeat the process of alternating sc, dc for the rest of the row. The last stitch in the row should be a dc. Then ch x1 and turn. The ch is a turning ch so do not work in it. Skip over it in the next row and go directly to the last stitch worked. (30)
Row 3-24: Make a sc on top of the last rows dc, and a dc over the last sc. Repeat that for the rest of the row. Then ch x1 and turn (30). When all the rows are complete, fasten off and weave in the tail.
Alternatively, when all rows are completed you can crochet along the edge for a cleaner finish.
Congratulations on completing your own grit stitch crochet dishcloth!
