✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Type: I used acrylic yarn for this free, easy crochet duck pattern. Any type of yarn will work—cotton, chunky, etc.
- Tension Tip: If your stitches are a bit loose, try yarning under instead of over to make the stitches tighter and closer together. You can also use a smaller hook for tighter stitches.
- Final Size: By using a 5mm (H) hook, the crochet duck's final size is roughly 4 inches high and 6 inches across.
🪡 Materials Needed
- Yarn colors: 1 skein of white, small ball of orange
- Polyfill
- Safety eyes
- H hook (5mm)
- Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends and sewing pieces together
💭 Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms)
- Magic ring (MR)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Increase (inc) - 2 stitches in the same stitch
- Chains (ch)
- Decrease (dec) - 1 stitch in 2 stitches
🧋 Variations
- If you want a large duck, try using a larger hook and some chunky yarn!
- Switch up the colors for a different look. A bright yellow yarn can make the duck look more like a traditional rubber duck, while pastel colors add a cute, playful vibe.

🐌Expert Tips
- Using Safety Eyes: Add the safety eyes before completing the final stuffing. This ensures you can easily adjust their placement and ensure they're securely attached. Place the safety eyes around Round 12 for the best positioning.
- Stuffing and Shaping: Use small amounts of stuffing at a time to maintain the duck’s shape. Overstuffing can lead to lumps, while too little stuffing can make the duck appear deflated. When stuffing the beak and feet, make sure they are firm but not overstuffed, so they hold their shape without bulging.
- Stitch Markers: Place stitch markers at the beginning of each round. This will help you keep track of your rounds, especially when working in continuous rounds without joining.
- Crochet a Family of Ducks: Create a family by making ducks in different sizes using various yarn weights and hook sizes. You can make a mama duck and a few ducklings, each slightly smaller than the last.
- Experiment with Colors: Don’t limit yourself to just white or yellow! Use fun pastel colors, or even make a rainbow duck for a whimsical touch.
🧵 Pattern FAQs
Yes! Any type of yarn will work for this pattern. Cotton, chunky yarn, or even specialty yarns can add a unique touch. Just make sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.
To make a larger duck, use a larger hook and thicker yarn, like chunky yarn. For a smaller duck, use a smaller hook and lighter yarn. Adjusting your stitch count proportionally can also help create the desired size.
It's best to add the safety eyes once the head and body of the duck are partially stuffed, typically around Round 12. Position them before completely closing up the body to ensure they’re securely fastened.
