Today, we’re making a cute Crochet Orange Pattern with a Crochet Leaf! Crochet food has gained popularity recently, especially crochet fruits, and these crochet oranges are perfect additions to any crochet food playset.

2 finished crochet oranges on a table.

As mentioned, crochet food has risen in popularity, especially with crochet pop tarts, dino nuggets, and other things like fruit like my crochet lemon pattern!

As a fruit lover myself, I just had to crochet some of my favorites, like oranges! They are sweet, tart, and super juicy.

While it's not preferred for crochet plushies to be juicy, we can still appreciate a good crochet orange because they can be made to look super cute.

Whether you are making an orange amigurumi for yourself, your kids, for decoration, or as a soft item to toss (hee hee), it is sure to bring a smile to someone’s face! Also, if you are looking for more crochet orange themed patterns, check out my crochet orange bag pattern.

So, let's get started on making the crochet orange pattern!

    ✏️ Things to Note:

    1. Yarn Choice: I used acrylic yarn for this crochet citrus pattern. You can also use cotton and even chunky yarn if you want to create a giant orange. I would stay away from wool unless you’re okay with it shrinking after washing.
    2. Basic Stitches: The base of the pattern only requires single crochet (sc), so if you can single crochet, you can make this crochet orange pattern! If you want to make the leaf and flower, a few extra stitches are needed, including Chains, Half Double Crochet (hdc), and Double Crochet (dc).
    3. Tight Stitches: My stitches are tight when I single crochet, but if you have trouble keeping your stitches tight, try yarning under instead of yarning over during a sc. This creates a naturally tighter stitch. It might take some getting used to, but most amigurumi enthusiasts suggest yarning under.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Red Heart - Pumpkin orange
    • Red Heart - Spring green
    • Red Heart - White
    • Red Heart - Gold
    • 10mm Safety eyes
    • 4.5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
    • Polyfill

💭 Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms):

    • Magic ring (mr)
    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Increase (inc) - 2 stitches in the same stitch
    • Chains (ch)
    • Decrease (dec) - 1 stitch combining 2 stitches
    • Double Crochet (dc)
    • Half Double Crochet (hdc)
    • Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog)

🍵 Instructions for Crochet Orange Pattern with Crochet Leaf

For the crochet orange we will mostly be working in rounds.

    Crochet Orange Pattern:

7 rounds of the orange are completed and on a table with a hook.

Round 3: Inc, sc, then repeat until end of round (18).

Round 4: Inc, sc x2, then repeat until end of round (24).

Round 5: Inc, sc x3, then repeat until end of round (30).

Round 6: Inc, sc x4, then repeat until end of round (36).

Round 7: Inc, sc x5, then repeat until end of round (42).

Round 8-15: Sc in every stitch (42).

Round 16: Dec, sc x5, then repeat for the entire round (36).

Round 17: Dec, sc x4, then repeat for the entire round (30). And add the eyes between rounds 10-11, about 5 stitches apart.

Round 18: Dec, sc x3, then repeat for the entire round (24). Stuff the ball if you haven’t already yet.

Round 19: Dec, sc x2, then repeat for the entire round (18).

Round 20: Dec, sc, then repeat for the entire round (12).

    Crochet Orange Blossom:

Round of yellow for the middle of a flower, on a table.

Round 1: With the yellow yarn make a mr and sc x5 into the circle. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off the yarn. Join the white yarn.

Round 2: *Ch x2, and dc2tog in the same stitch you made the chains from. Then ch x2 and sl st to the next stitch. Repeat from * for the rest of the round. Fasten off the white and leave a tail for sewing.

    Crochet Leaf Pattern:

Crochet leaf, in hand, above a table.

With the green yarn, ch x8. Then in the second ch from the hook make a sl st. Then follow this sequence: sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Make a chain and work the unworked side of the leaf.

Sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Then fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing, you will use 1-2 leaves per orange.

    Sewing:

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Yarn Selection: Choose a soft, durable yarn that holds its shape well. Cotton yarn is great for summer projects, while acrylic offers versatility.
    • Safety Eyes: If using safety eyes, ensure they are securely fastened, if it is for a small child - embroider the eyes instead.
    • Stuffing Options: Consider using eco-friendly stuffing alternatives, like cotton or recycled materials, for a sustainable project.

    🧵 Pattern FAQs

    What is Amigurumi?

Amigurumi is the Japanese word for crocheted dolls and other crocheted toys. It is more commonly associated with any crocheted stuffed object that has a bit of cuteness - like this orange!

Are there different ways to make a crochet leaf?

Absolutely! Leaves come in all different sorts of shapes and sizes in real life, and the same goes for crocheted leaves! Find a few patterns that work for you and try them out!

How do you sew on the leaf securely to the crochet orange?

I make sure my yarn tail is long, thread it on my tapestry needle, and insert it under a loop under the leaf. Before pulling tight, I pass the tapestry needle through the loop created from the yarn and repeat a few times at various spots under the leaf, ensuring to go through both the leaf and the orange each time.
