Football season is here so why not make yourself a cute squishable football with my crochet football pattern! It’s perfect to squeeze during those stressful moments while you're watching the game!

    Finished crochet football plushie.

Am I a sports fan? No not really, but I have family that are and I know that watching sports games can get pretty intense. Including football. The closest I get to watching any sports is the Olympics, the winter Olympics is particularly my favorite - I watch just about all the different sports! Luge, speed skating, ice skating, curling etc.

With the Superbowl coming up I decided to crochet a football! My husband said something about our local team making it to the playoffs, so I‘ll just have to trust him since I don’t follow it (go Seahawks!).

The crochet football pattern is fairly simple to make and can be completed in just a few hours! The football amigurumi uses large safety eyes but you can forgo making a face if you just wanted to have it as a normal football instead.

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Size: The crochet football pattern is roughly 7 inches tall. I yarn under for this football  pattern so my rounds are tighter, if you do the normal yarn over it will come out just slightly bigger. Examples of a few patterns where I chose to yarn under instead of yarn over are my crochet croissant pattern and my crochet gingerbread man pattern. I think it creates a more polished overall appearance.
    2. Yarn: I chose to do worsted weight (size 4 yarn). You can make this pattern in any weight of yarn - smaller weighted yarn will yield a smaller football and a bigger weight will create a larger football. Just change the hook size according to your yarn type.
    3. Shape: This crochet football pattern is made to appear rounder than a typical football or other crochet football patterns out there - if you would like a football plush with more pronounced tapered ends you will need to use a different pattern.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Big Twist Yarn - white
    • Big Twist Yarn - warm brown
    • 18mm safety eyes
    • Tapestry needle
    • Polyfill
    • 4mm hook

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring - mr
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Increase - inc
    • Decrease - dec

Round 2: Inc in every stitch (12). +6

Round 3: Inc, sc x3. Then repeat for the rest of the round (15). +3

Round 10: Inc, sc x12. Then repeat for the rest of the round (42). +3

Fasten off the white yarn and join the brown yarn.

Starting to decrease the crochet football pattern.

Round 11: With the brown yarn: Inc, sc x6. Then repeat for the rest of the round (48). +6

Round 12: Inc, sc x15. Then repeat for the rest of the round (51). +3

    Round 14 - 27: Sc in every stitch (54).

Round 28: Dec, sc x16. Then repeat for the rest of the round (51). -3

Round 29: Dec, sc x15. Then repeat for the rest of the round (48). -3

Round 32: With the brown yarn: Dec, sc x11. Then repeat for the rest of the round (36). -3

    Finished crocheting the football.

Round 33: Dec, sc x4. Then repeat for the rest of the round (30). -6

Round 34: Dec, sc x8. Then repeat for the rest of the round (27). -3

Round 35: Dec, sc x7. Then repeat for the rest of the round (24). -3

Start to stuff the football. Make sure to fill the other tip of the football really well.

Round 36: Dec, sc x2. Then repeat for the rest of the round (18). -6

Round 37: Dec, sc x4. Then repeat for the rest of the round (15). -3

Round 38: Dec, sc x3. Then repeat for the rest of the round (12). -3

Round 39: Dec in every stitch (6). Fasten off the brown yarn and then sew the end closed.

Now you have a basic football shape.

    Embroidery:

    Finished embroidering the face.

I like to use some black yarn to embroider a mouth right between the eyes by making a little v.

I also add a little bit of white to the outer half of the eyes by taking white yarn and getting the yarn as close to the safety eyes as I can. It doesn't matter if you go from top down or vice versa, but make sure you are careful when pulling the loop tight because it can go underneath the eye.

    Embroidering the football stitch marks.
    Embroidering the football stitch marks.

For embroidering the stitch marks I start by making the larger horizontal line first. I have the line stretching from rounds 13 to 27. And I embroidered that line 2x.

Next I add the shorter vertical lines. I made 4 lines a little less than an inch apart and about an inch long straddling the horizontal line. I made sure to go over every vertical line 2x.

Fasten off any loose yarn and the crochet football pattern is done!

    Finished crochet football plushie.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Since we are working in a continuous spiral for the crochet football pattern it can be hard to tell where each round begins and ends. I suggest using stitch markers if you need extra help.
    • The stitches for this free crochet football pattern are fairly simple, but if you are not used to doing yarn under it can be confusing, you can always opt to yarn over instead.
    • If you want to avoid embroidery, you can always keep the football plain or use fabric paint and even felt.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

How long does the football crochet pattern take to make?

It took me roughly 3 hrs, but it might take others shorter or longer depending on how fast they can crochet. (I am a pretty slow crocheter)

    What is amigurumi?

Amigurumi is the Japanese term for a crochet doll made from yarn. It has gained popularity over the years so we see more and more designers using the term “amigurumi” versus a “plush toy”.

Can the football pattern be made with chenille yarn or chunky yarn?

Absolutely! Just keep in mind that the football will be bigger and the hook will need to be a different size.
