My Bohemian Crochet Pillow utilizes the popular crochet granite stitch. The granite stitch is well-loved for its striking or subtle appearance and, best of all, it’s super easy to make!
The bohemian crochet pillow pattern is a perfect addition to your collection of desert boho pillows! It pairs nicely with my Crochet Cactus Pillow Pattern and Free Crochet Cactus Pattern if you're looking for variety in boho crochet pillow designs.
This bohemian pillow is made using the granite stitch, also known as the moss stitch. Although it looks complicated, it is quite simple to create. As long as you know how to make single crochet and chain stitches and can work on both sides of a chain, you can make this pattern.
The best part about this hand-crocheted pillow is that you can make it as a pillow or easily adjust the size to create a crochet pillow cover. If you decide to switch out the bohemian pillow for a different throw pillow, you can do so!
Crocheting pillow patterns can be easy or as challenging as you make them. While this crochet pillow pattern is fairly straightforward, the color changes may make it appear more difficult. If you're not very experienced, you may want to limit the number of color changes you incorporate.
I made this free crochet pillow pattern using scrap yarn, so the colors I mentioned are closest to what I used. If, like me, you have a ton of scrap yarn and want to create things other than blankets, consider my Crochet Planets and Solar System Play Set or any of my smaller crochet projects.
The crochet keychain patterns are also a great way to use up small bits, like my Crochet Rainbow Keychain Pattern or Crochet Strawberry Keychain Pattern.

What Makes the Crochet Granite Stitch Unique?
The crochet granite stitch is economical, using less yarn than single crochet due to the chains. It stretches more than standard single crochet while maintaining thick coverage with minimal holes, making it ideal for items like my Crochet Fingerless Gloves in Granite Stitch and Crochet Linen Stitch Scarf Pattern.
This stitch is versatile; you can easily switch colors every few rows to create beautiful patterns. I used nine colors for this crochet scrap yarn pattern, but feel free to add more or keep it simple with just one or a few colors.
While I don’t have labels for the yarn I used, the colors (in order) are:
- Soft yellow
- Yellow
- Dark yellow (almost stone ground mustard)
- Orange
- Red
- Raspberry
- Maroon
- Teal/Turquoise
- Light blue
I followed this sequence, then reversed the order, using light blue or light yellow for one round before alternating again.
🪡 Materials Needed

🧋 Variations

🍵 Instructions for Bohemian Crochet Pillow
This pattern is worked in the round.
The final size of the pillow is 12x12 inches. So a smaller pillow.
If you would like to make the boho pillow bigger based on the size crochet pillow you need, feel free to do so! This is an easy pattern to adjust height and width of, just add more beginning chains and then rows!
Round 1: Ch x66 +1 turning chain. (66 +1)
Round 2: In the second ch from hook, make a sc, ch + skip the chain below, and make a sc into the next chain. Repeat for the rest of the row.
When you get to the last crochet on the end make sc, ch, then turn the piece so the opposite side of the chain that hasn’t been worked is now on top, then sc into the same chain your last sc went into. So that end stitch should be sc,ch,sc.
Crochet the rest of the round like you did in the first part. (68)
Round 3: You are going to switch colors as outlined above in my list of colors used by making a sc in the last rows chain loop (not the chain but its entirety) when yarning over after inserting the hook into the stitch, yarn over with a new color and pull the new color through.
After starting the round with a sc, ch and skip the previous rounds sc, and then sc into the chain loop below.
For every round you are going to ch over the previous rows sc and sc into the chain gaps (not the actual ch) Switching colors for every pass.
Round 4-50: Repeat round 3 but with different colors each time.
When the pillow is as big as you want it, fasten off the last color but leave a long tail for sewing, sew the top of the pillow shut, remembering to stuff the pillow along the way. And your pillow is all ready to use!
🐌Expert Tips
- Color Management: Keep a notebook or chart to plan your color changes in advance. This will help you visualize the final design and ensure a smooth transition between colors.
- Yarn Care: If using scrap yarn, ensure all your yarns are compatible in terms of fiber content (e.g., all acrylic or all cotton) for a cohesive look and feel.
- Blocking: After completing your pillow, consider blocking it to achieve a neat shape and finish. This helps even out any uneven stitches and gives your pillow a polished look.
- Experiment with Texture: Try using different yarn weights for unique textures. A chunky yarn will give a different look than a thinner yarn.
- Mix and Match: Don’t hesitate to mix this pattern with other crochet techniques for a truly unique design. For example, incorporate some popcorn stitches or bobbles for added texture!
🧵 Pattern FAQs
It's also called the moss stitch and linen stitch, but essentially it is where you are alternating single crochet and chain stitches for each row or round.
Absolutely! You will just want to crochet the edges or sew them together. This way also makes it easier to make the pillow into a crochet pillow cover.
In the round, you can say the inside is the wrong side, but when it is made in rows there is no wrong or right side because you flip your work.
