I love poptarts! They are so nostalgic for me that I decided to make my very own crochet poptart pattern of just a few of my favorite flavors!

    Finished crochet pop tarts.

I love this amigurumi poptart pattern that I made because it is just so versatile! You can make it be a strawberry poptart, cinnamon and brown sugar, or even the 2002 Spiderman movie tie-in poptart that was wild berry โ€”which was actually my favorite as a kid and I have a funny story to go with it! Actually the story is very sad for me but I digress.

Growing up my dad was a longhaul truck driver and every summer each of us kids spent a week or so on the truck with him. We usually ate at truck stops, but sometimes we just ate cold food in the truck like pb and jโ€™s and poptarts.

Well when I was 7 years old and did my week on the truck that summer my dad let me buy a big box of poptarts โ€”any flavor I wanted. And I chose the cool new spiderman poptarts. I had one package later that day, but then when I woke up the next morning my dad had thrown them out! Out of his grogginess he thought he was throwing away a bag of trash but they were indeed my 2002 Spiderman wild berry poptarts. And we never rebought them!

I was so sad I think I cried the entire day and I still remember this 23 years later. I laugh about it now but that was a very traumatic event for a little 7 year old me.

Now I have a crochet poptart pattern and I can make any flavor I want to. And yes, I did in fact make a Spiderman poptart.

Let's begin making the crochet poptart pattern, so you can have your very own poptart collection too!

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Size: The crochet poptart pattern is roughly 3x4 inches. It is perfect for keychains, or even a cute card sleeve!
    2. Yarn: I used regular worsted weight for this amigurumi food pattern, which I do for most of my food patterns except the crochet tempura which uses chunky yarn. But if you wanted to use chunky yarn, now this pattern will be about double its current size.
    3. Skeins: This is a small project so you do not need to buy new skeins. I think it's great for trying to use up any of the little remnants of colors you might have lying around.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Red Heart Yarn - aran
    • Scrap yarn for the frosting
    • Furls Streamline 5mm Crochet Hooks
    • Safety Eyes
    • Tapestry needle

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Chain (ch)
    • Single crochet (sc)

    * The ch x1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch in the row, it is a turning chain.

    * If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

    • You can make keychains! I think the strawberry poptart would look good paired with my crochet strawberry keychain pattern!
    • You can turn it into a small single pocket wallet (just make sure the sizing is correct), If you want a larger wallet design you can make my crochet wallet pattern. You can also use it as a crochet gift card holder!

    ๐ŸตInstructions for Crochet Poptart Pattern

The crochet poptart pattern is made in rows.

    Whole Poptart:

Finished base of the whole poptart.

Row 1: Ch x11. Then in the second ch make a sc. Continue making sc for the rest of the ch length (10). Ch x1 and turn.

Row 2-14: Sc in every stitch (10). Then ch x1 and turn. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Make x2.

    Frosting:

Finished frosting of the whole poptart.

Row 1: Ch x9. Then in the second ch make a sc. Continue making sc for the rest of the ch length (8). Ch x1 and turn.

Row 2-12: Sc in every stitch (8). Then ch x1 and turn. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

    Sewing:

Finished sewing frosting to Poptart base.
    Finished cinnamon brown sugar poptart.

Add the safety eyes to the frosting part of the poptart. I chose to add mine 3 rows up from the bottom and 2 stitches from the edges.

Sew the frosting to the top of one of the poptart bases - try and center it the best you can and make sure there is a little bit of crust shown on each side.

Once sewn on, add finishing touches like any embroidery to complete the frosting or a mouth between the eyes.

After the front of the amigurumi pastry is completed, crochet the 2 sides of the pastry together. Make sure the frosting is on the outer side. To crochet the pastry together just rejoin the aran yarn to the edge and single crochet around the poptart. As a general rule you want to add 1 single crochet to each row and then 2 in the corners.

    Bitten Poptart:

    Base of bitten poptart.
Finished bitten frosting for bitten poptart.

Row 1: Ch x11. Then in the second ch make a sc. Continue making sc for the rest of the ch length (10). Ch x1 and turn.

Row 2-11: Sc in every stitch (10). Then ch x1 and turn.

Row 12-13: Sc x8 (8). Then ch x1 and turn.

Row 14: Sc x6 (6). Fasten off and weave in the ends. Make x2.

    Bitten Frosting:

Row 1: Ch x9. Then in the second ch make a sc. Continue making sc for the rest of the ch length (8). Ch x1 and turn.

Row 2-10: Sc in every stitch (8). Then ch x1 and turn.

Row 11-12: Sc x6 (6). Then ch x1 and turn. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

    Sewing:

Assemble just like the normal whole poptart, but add a jam color to the bitten mark when sewing the poptart closed.

Finished crochet bitten strawberry pop tarts.

And now the crochet poptart pattern is finished! I hope you enjoyed making this tasty treat!

If you are wanting to crochet more breakfast foods, check out my new crochet croissant pattern which includes a tiny mustache and beret! Or you can make my crochet egg coaster and crochet toast coaster pattern which are perfect to pair with cups of morning coffee.

If you have any aran yarn color leftover, check out my crochet toast bag pattern! Itโ€™s a nice medium sized purse that can hold all of your daily essentials!

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Poptarts are fairly flat in real life so I did not stuff this pattern, you can if you want but it is not necessary.
    • If you want to make different poptarts embroider different designs โ€”like little dots for sprinkles, a zigzag for a stripe effect, or if all else fails you can buy puffy paint to add intricate designs.
    • The crochet poptart pattern is actually super simple to adjust in size if you want to make the crochet poptart bigger/ All you have to do is make more chains at the beginning and more rows.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

Can I use chunky yarn for the pattern?

Yes! It will just make it twice as big

Do you think I can make the poptart with just a front piece and then use it as an applique?

Of course! You just need to make the frosting and one side of the crochet poptart base.

Is this pattern great for beginners?

Absolutely! This pattern only uses single crochet and chains so as long as you know how to do those stitches you should be golden!
