    🍵Instructions for Crochet Marshmallow Pattern

For this crochet marshmallow pattern, we will be working in rounds.

    Crochet Marshmallow:

    Crochet marshmallow pattern in progress.
Finished crochet marshmallows in a bowl of marshmallows.

Round 1: Using the white yarn, make a mr and make sc x6 in the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x6 in the second chain from the hook. (6)

Round 2: Sc inc in every sc. (12)

Round 3: Inc, sc. Then repeat until the end of round (18).

Round 4: Inc, sc x2. Then repeat until the end of round (24).

Round 5: In blo, sc in every stitch (24). Back loop only is only for this round, now you can go back to doing normal single crochet stitches.

Round 6-10: Sc in every stitch (24). Then add the eyes between rounds 7 and 8.

Round 11: In blo, dec, sc x2. Then repeat for the rest of the round (18). Back loop only is only for this round, now you can go back to doing normal single crochet stitches.

Round 12: Dec, sc. Then repeat for the rest of the round (12). Stuff the crochet marshmallow with polyfill.

Round 13: Dec. Then repeat for the rest of the round (6). Fasten off and leave a long tail, sew the bottom of the crochet marshmallow closed.

Now, to make the bottom and top of the marshmallow flatter, take the yarn to the middle of the marshmallow, then go down the center of the marshmallow all the way to the otherside. Pull the yarn slightly so that it pulls the middle of the marshmallow down a little so it appears flatter. Do this a few times. Then tie off the yarn and tuck the tail.

Embroider a mouth if you would like.

    Marshmallow on Fire:

Do not add safety eyes, instead using yarn or embroidery floss, make little eyes that look like this > < in the middle of the face. If you didnt change the color of the yarn, and you have it available use brown and black paint for the burnt marks (best to use acrylic or fabric paint)

    Crochet Flame:

First step of crochet fire for marshmallows.
Third step of crochet fire for marshmallows.

With yellow yarn, ch x5, in 2nd ch from the hook make a sc, dc, and sc in the same stitch. In the next stitch make a sl st. Then in the next stitch make a sc, and the following stitch a dc. Ch x2 and sl st to the last foundation ch (where you made the dc).

Now fasten off the yellow yarn and attach the orange yarn. You want to join the yarn to the first sc you made in the last row.

Fourth step of crochet fire for marshmallows.
    Finished crochet burning marshmallows.

Make a sc above the last rows sc and the dc. After that ch x3 and sl st into the 3rd ch from the hook (a picot stitch). Next, sc in the following stitch (the sc from the previous row) and make a sl st above the other sl st. Sc in the next 3 stitches, the last one being above the chains, ch x3 and then sl st into the last chain from the hook. Sc down the ch length and then fasten off the yarn. Leave a tail for sewing.

Now if you used paint to “burn” your marshmallow, you will need to apply it and let it dry. Once it is dry, sew the flame over the burnt area of the crochet marshmallow.

    Crochet Logs:

    Make 4 logs.

One piece of the crochet campfire logs.
Connected 4 pieces of the crochet campfire logs.

Round 1: With the lighter brown, make a mr then sc x6 into the ring and pull tight (6).

Round 2: Sc inc in every stitch (12). Then fasten off the light brown and attach the darker brown.

Round 3: In blo, sc x12 in the dark brown color (12). Back loop only is only for this round, now you can go back to doing normal single crochet stitches.

Round 4-10: Sc in every stitch (12). Then stuff the log with polyfill.

Round 11: Make a dec in every stitch (6). Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Once you have 4 logs made, sew each log completely closed so polyfill doesnt escape, then attach the logs together in a plus shape.

    Crochet Fire:

    Finished crochet fire.
    Finished crochet campfire.

Round 1: Using the orange yarn, make a mr and make sc x6 in the circle.

Round 5: Inc, sc x3. Then repeat until the end of round (30).

Round 6-10: Sc in every stitch (30).

Round 11: Dec, sc x8. Then repeat 2 more times (27).

    Round 12: Dec x3. Then sc x 21 (24).

    Round 13: Dec x3. Then sc x18 (21).

    Round 14: Dec x3. Then sc x15 (18).

    Round 15: Sc x6, dec x3, sc x6 (15).

    Round 16: Sc x5, dec x3, sc x4 (12).

    Round 17: sc x3, dec x3, sc x3 (9).

    Round 18: Sc x9 (9).

Round 19: Dec, sc. Then repeat 2 more times (6). Then fasten off and weave in any ends.

Sew the bottom of the fire to the top of the logs.

    Conclusion:

And now your crochet marshmallow pattern set is complete! If you want to make a stitch for the marshmallows you can crochet one by using rounds of 6 or if it is for an older kid, you can use a wooden skewer for the marshmallow stick.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Use Stitch Markers: Working in continuous rounds? Then a stitch marker is your best friend! Mark the first stitch of each round to keep track and ensure your marshmallow stays nice and even.
    • Tension Matters: Keep your stitches snug—not too tight, not too loose. A tighter tension helps keep stuffing from showing through and gives your marshmallow that perfect squishy firmness.
    • Make It Kid-Safe: If you're making this as a toy, then skip safety eyes or buttons and embroider any facial features for little ones under 3.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

Are crochet food toys safe for kids?

Yes! When made with safety in mind (like using embroidered details instead of safety eyes for children under 3), crochet food toys are soft, durable, and perfect for imaginative play.

What yarn is best for crochet food toys?

Cotton or cotton-blend yarns are ideal—they hold their shape well, have great stitch definition, and are easy to clean. Acrylic yarn also works and gives a softer, fluffier feel, especially great for marshmallows or ice cream.

How do I keep my toys looking clean and fresh?

Spot clean with a damp cloth or gently hand wash with mild soap and let air dry. Cotton yarn is more durable if you expect lots of handling by little ones.

Hi ! I was wondering if you could post a video of you making the fire that you sewed on top of the marshmallow. I am not the best with written instructions, and my fire is looking a little bit off. Thank you so much for this awesome free pattern. It really means a lot, and you can really tell how much time and effort you put into everything.
