My Crochet Heart Granny Square Pattern is perfect for Valentine’s Day or for showing someone how much they mean to you! This crochet heart granny square is ideal for making bags, blankets, and other flat heart crochet projects.
The crochet heart granny square is very simple and can be easily achieved if you already know how to do color changes. I will guide you step by step so you can learn how to make a solid granny square! My crochet moon granny square and crochet sun granny square also look complicated but are easy to do once you know how to do color changes.
I personally love solid and continuous granny squares over the more traditional cluster granny squares because sometimes the motifs get lost in translation. With the solid granny square, the design remains clear and distinct as there are no holes to work around. I love using solid granny squares for blankets like my crochet sunflower blanket and crochet rainbow baby blanket pattern.
The solid crochet heart granny square is perfect for bags, cardigans, blankets—you name it!

✏️ Things to Note:
- Yarn Choice: I used standard worsted acrylic yarn for this free heart granny square crochet pattern. You can also use cotton or chunky yarn for larger squares (10-12 inches), ideal for bags, pillows, or blankets.
- Beginner-Friendly: The pattern primarily uses double crochet (dc), making it super easy for beginners to follow.
- Seamless Color Changes: To change colors seamlessly, complete a double crochet as normal, switch the yarn after the first two loops, and finish the stitch with the new color.

🍵 Instructions for Crochet Heart Granny Square
For the crochet heart granny square pattern, we will be working in rounds.
Round 1: With red yarn, make a mr, then ch x3. Dc x2 into the mr. Then ch x2. After that (dc x3 into the magic ring and ch x2). Repeat what is in the brackets 2 more times. You should have 4 clusters. Slip stitch into the top of the ch space at the beginning of the round
Round 2: Ch x2. Dc into each dc stitch from the previous round, dc x2 + ch x2 + dc x2 in each chain 2 corner stitch, sl st to the first dc in the row.
Switch colors to white. You will trail the red into the stitch when making the next couple of dc’s in white, so make sure to keep the red yarn next to the stitches you will be going through. Do not trail it outside of the stitch. Do not cut.
Round 3: Ch x2. Dc x2 with the white yarn, then switch colors back to red and trail the white for the rest of the round. Dc into every stitch and dc x2 + ch x2 + dc x2 in each corner.
Switch colors back to white right at the end of the round and sl st to the first dc in the row.
Round 4: Ch x2. Dc x4 with the white yarn, then switch back to red. Dc in every stitch in the row, then do the corner as described above.
On the second side of the square work in red until you are 2 dc AWAY from the corner, then switch back to white. Do the last 2 dc in white and then make a white corner for the second corner in this round, after the corner dc x2. Make a color change back to red.
Make dc x7 in red for the third side of the round. When you get 2 away from the third corner, switch back to white and dc x2, corner (dc x2, ch x2, dc x2), and then dc x2 on the fourth side. Switch Back to red.
After changing the yarn back to red, dc the rest of the side, the last corner, and then 2 more dc on the last part of the first side. Switch back to white for the last 2 dc in the round. Sl st to the beginning of the round.
Round 5: Ch x2. Dc the first side of the square and corner in white. On the second side dc x2 in white and then switch to red. Dc x7. Switch back to white. Dc x6, make a corner, and then dc x 6 all in white. Then switch back to red. Dc x3 in red. Then switch back to white for dc x6, make a corner, then dc x6. Switch back to red and dc x7 before making your last switch to white. Dc x7 for the rest of the round. Sl st to the first dc in the round.
Round 6: In white, ch x2 and then dc in every previous dc in the row. Remember to make each corner dc x2 + ch x2 + dc x2. You don't have to trail the red in this row because you will not be using it. Once the round is done, slip stitch to the first dc and fasten off. Weave in both the red and white yarn ends.
And now you have a really cute and easy crochet heart granny square ready for any project you want!
If you have any extra red yarn, you can make a crochet heart keychain!
🐌Expert Tips
- Choose the Right Yarn: Use yarn that is easy to work with, such as acrylic or cotton, especially for beginners. Avoid yarns that are too slippery, as they can be challenging for color changes.
- Master Color Changes: Always keep the trailing yarn on the inside of the square to avoid loose ends on the back. Practice your color-changing technique on a swatch before starting your project.
- Blocking Your Squares: After finishing, consider blocking your granny squares to help them maintain their shape. This is particularly helpful for more intricate designs.
🧵 Pattern FAQs
Trailing the yarn outside of the stitch will cause lines on the back of the granny square and can easily snag on something or become loose, pulling on the stitches. By cutting the yarn each time you need to change colors, you will have many ends to weave in, which can lead to visibility issues from the front side.
Absolutely! You can use thicker or thinner yarn and adjust your hook size to create larger or smaller squares. Just remember to modify your stitch counts accordingly to maintain the square's shape.
No worries! You can use whatever yarn you have on hand, as long as it’s similar in weight. If you don’t have a tapestry needle, try using a safety pin or another sharp object to weave in the ends. The key is to get creative with what you have!

Hi, I was wondering what the size of the squares is? I need a square thats 13x13cm..
Kimberly Arenas says
it is a little bit bigger than that, you can always use a smaller hook for a smaller size square.
