The Crochet Lemon Peel Stitch Blanket Pattern with shell edging is an excellent project for both experienced crocheters and beginners alike. All you need to know is how to make single crochet and double crochet stitches to achieve this rich textured crochet stitch.

    Finished crochet lemon peel blanket.

This stunning design combines the classic lemon peel crochet stitch with a delicate shell edging, resulting in a cozy, charming, and best of all easy crochet baby blanket pattern. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also feels incredibly soft to the touch. With little to no holes in the fabric, this blanket is perfect for babies, providing a safe and comfortable space for them to snuggle and play. My crochet rainbow baby blanket pattern and crochet daisy blanket pattern also has little to no holes and would also make lovely baby blankets.

Its thoughtful construction makes it an ideal gift for new parents who want a practical yet lovely addition to their nursery.

The lemon peel stitch also has many different names. It is often referred to as the grit stitch, griddle stitch and seed stitch. I will be referring to it as lemon peel since this post is named after it after all.

Now let me show you how to crochet the lemon peel stitch!

    ✏️ Things to Note:

    1. Yarn Type: I made the lemon peel stitch crochet blanket with worsted weight yarn, feel free to use worsted weight as well or you can try changing the yarn weight if you'd like. This is a stitch that looks great with almost any yarn!
    2. Double Stranding (If you want): Double stranding the yarn is an easy and cost-effective alternative to chunky yarn if you want a chunky look without the higher price. This is also a great way to complete larger blankets faster, just go up a few hook sizes.
    3. Dimensions: The dimensions of the crochet blanket are roughly 36x36 inches. If your blanket is a bit smaller, just add more chains at the beginning. If you want to change the blanket size entirely, feel free! The pattern is extremely versatile and can be adjusted for any blanket size just make sure you crochet an odd amount for the chain.

🍵 Instructions for Crochet Lemon Peel Stitch Blanket Pattern

For the main part of the lemon peel crochet blanket, we will be working in rows.

    Starting chain.

    Ch x121.

After making a single crochet and then a dc in the next stitch.

Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook make a sc. Then a dc in the next stitch. The lemon peel crochet stitch is made alternating single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) stitches.

    Finished first row.

Repeat alternating the stitches for the rest of the row. The last stitch should be a dc. Then ch x1 and turn.

    Starting second row.

Row 2-108: Sc over the dc, and then a dc over the sc. You will repeat this for the rest of the row. Then ch x1 and turn.

You should always have a sc over the last rows dc and vice versa.

After the last row, fasten off the yarn and weave in the tails.

    Crochet Shell Edging:

    Starting the shell border.

Join the white yarn to anywhere on the edge of the crochet baby blanket.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Yarn Selection: Opt for soft, baby-friendly yarns like cotton or bamboo to ensure comfort for sensitive skin. Avoid yarns that may irritate or cause allergies.
    • Lighter Option: If you want a lighter blanket, you can use just one strand of yarn. Be sure to choose a smaller hook and add more chains to the blanket to get the right dimensions. Remember to start with an even number of chains plus 1 for turning to the next row.
    • Color Choices: Consider using soothing pastel colors or bright, engaging shades to stimulate a baby's visual development. You can also customize the colors to match the nursery decor.
    • Washability: Always choose yarn that is machine washable. New parents will appreciate a blanket that can withstand frequent washing without losing its shape or softness.

    🧵 Pattern FAQs

Why does the crochet lemon peel stitch have so many names?

A lot of it has to do with different regions and different generations that have used the stitch.

What if I want to make a larger crochet grit stitch blanket?

Simply increase the number of chains you start with while ensuring you maintain an odd number of chains.

Can I use different types of yarn for the crochet lemon peel stitch blanket?

Absolutely! While I recommend using yarns like cotton, acrylic, or chunky yarn, you can experiment with other fibers as well.

For 1 strand of worsted weight yarn I generally use a 5 - 6mm hook for blankets.
