My Crochet Dumpling Bag Pattern is the perfect way to accessorize if you are a passionate foodie who loves dumplings. The crochet dumpling bag is big enough to hold a few things like your phone and wallet.
I love food. If you look through most of my crochet patterns a lot of them are food related. I love food so much that now I’m crocheting it constantly! Like my strawberry crochet bag and my crochet lemon bag pattern.
The dumpling bag came to fruition because my husband and I were having a lengthy car ride talk about dumplings; from how versatile they were, are practically found in every culture and were just little nifty packages for food and flavor.
That got me thinking about how I could make them in crochet and I settled on a small purse because the “stuff” it contains would be the “filling”. Each person carries different things in their purse, so the dumpling filling would be based on what each individual person carries in it if you catch what I am trying to say.
The crochet dumpling bag is an easy pattern to follow, so it is perfect for beginners and those who are more advanced!
So let's begin!

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Choices: I use chunky yarn for the bag, but you can opt for worsted weight for a smaller bag or super chunky yarn for a larger one. Any type of yarn will work for this pattern.
- Size: The bag is designed to hold a phone and other small items; it is not a large purse or bag.
- Shape and Stability: If you want a firmer dumpling purse that doesn't stretch easily and holds its shape, go down a hook size. Alternatively, lining the bag is a great option.

💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

🧋Variations
If you want to create a soup-like dumpling with a frilly top, continue making rounds after the row with gaps by adding 3 sc to each chain gap for the next row, then sc in each stitch normally after that.
🍵Instructions for Crochet Dumpling Bag
For this pattern we will be working in rounds.
Round 1: Using white chunky yarn and the 7mm hook, make a mr and then sc x6 into the mr. (6)
Round 2: Inc in every sc. (12)
Round 3: Inc, sc, then repeat until end of round (18)
Round 4: Inc, sc x2, then repeat until end of round (24)
Round 5: Inc, sc x3, then repeat until end of round (30)
Round 6: Inc, sc x4, then repeat until end of round (36)

Round 10-26: Sc in every stitch (54)
Round 27: Ch x2 + skip 2 stitches, then sc into the following stitch. Repeat for the rest of the round and slip stitch to the beginning of the round. Fasten off the yarn.
Drawstring:
Row 1: Using the yarn and the 5mm hook, ch x170-200 (depending on the length you want)
Weave the drawstring in between the holes made at the top of the bag. Once that is done, sew the drawstring ends together so it becomes one loop.
Cheeks:
Round 1: Using white light pink yarn and the 5mm hook, make a mr and then sc x6 into the mr. (6) Fasten off, but leave a long tail for sewing.
Finishing:
Attach the safety eyes where you would like the face to be.
Then sew on the cheeks and embroider the mouth.
Weave in any loose ends.
Then if needed make a lining for the bag (optional).
And tah-dah! Your crochet dumpling bag is completed!
If you want to add even more fun to your purse, consider crocheting a crochet dumpling or bao keychain for the bag.
The picture below will give you reference of size difference if you use size 5 yarn versus size 4 yarn, either one will work but one bag is just ever so slightly smaller!
🐌Expert Tips
- Drawstring Testing: For bags, I always suggest making the drawstring without fastening it off. Add it to your project and test it on yourself (even if it's for someone else) to see if it sits where you intend the bag to rest on a person.
- Color Experimentation: Consider using different colors for the cheeks or mouth to add a fun twist to your dumpling bag.
- Embellishments: You can also add small charms or embellishments to the drawstring for a personalized touch.
🧵Pattern FAQs
It’s about the size of a phone bag. It can hold a phone, wallet, and chapstick comfortably.
You can make it bigger by using super chunky yarn, or doubling up the chunky yarn and using 2 strands instead of 1.
Absolutely! Just make a magic ring, sc x6, and then a row of increases if you want them to be larger, then sew on.
