This bag is bananas! It really is because it is a Crochet Banana Bag. Turn a simple crochet sling bag pattern into this iconic fruit by following my crochet banana bag pattern tutorial.

I’m not one to shy away from unusual and unique crochet bags. Just check out my Crochet Strawberry Bag Pattern or Crochet Camera Bag Pattern for instance. Giant fruit and inanimate objects are my weakness! I personally love a statement bag that catches everyone's attention.
While crochet sling bags are very stylish right now, I wanted to make one that was more my style—one that elevated the basic crochet sling bag and made it more fun and exciting. I have always thought that sling bags look like bananas, and that's where the idea eventually came from. The perfect place to wear the crochet fruit bag is obviously in the grocery store!
I love having a crochet purse that matches every occasion!
- Going to the zoo? Carry the crochet orca bag or whale shark bag.
- Visiting the summer farmers' market? The crochet lemon bag would look stunning!
- Dining at your favorite dumpling house? The crochet dumpling bag is obviously the only choice.
And now you can make a crochet banana bag that can be your grocery store bag!

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Type. I used acrylic worsted weight for the pattern, but any yarn type could work. If you have use cotton for the bag and have leftover cotton yarn, check out my crochet sunflower coaster pattern!
- Size. The finished crochet banana bag is roughly 12 inches long.
- Granny Squares. I used basic solid granny squares as the base of the banana bag crochet. pattern, but you could use other granny squares as long as they are just one color; it should still be recognizable as a banana.

Large Brown Square:
This is the stem end of the banana.
Round 1: Using the brown, make a mr, ch 2 and then dc x3 in the circle. Ch x2, dc x3, ch x2 and dc x3, ch x2 and dc x3, ch x2 and join the first dc.

Sewing:
Sew the yellow squares together as shown in the picture. You want to fold the 2 squares on the end to become triangles, so half of the square is on the front and back.. If you want to add a zipper and have the bag open like a traditional sling bag, leave the top open.
Sew the small triangle to one end of the banana, and the larger brown square at the opposite side. Fold the larger square in half before sewing it so it has a more thin stem like appearance.
Sew the banana spots to the banana.
Handle:
You can either buy a strap for your banana bag, or make one.
If you want to make the banana bag strap, this is what I do:
With black yarn, ch x6, make a sc in the second stitch from the hook. Then sc for the rest of the row (5). Then ch x1 and turn. Sc in every stitch (5). Repeat until the handle is the length you want (100 rows is roughly the length you want) and then sew it to the bag ends.
All you have to do now is line the crochet bag and add a zipper! You can use regular thread and needle for this.
And now you have your very own crochet sling bag that looks like a banana. The perfect crochet market bag to go to the grocery store. Everyone will look at you and ask where you got your very cool and original crochet banana bag from!
🐌Expert Tips
- How to Add a Liner: Lay the bag down over fabric and cut out two pieces that are slightly larger than the actual crochet banana bag. Sew them together, attach them to the inside of the bag, and then add a zipper!
- Choosing the Right Yarn: For best results, choose a yarn that holds its shape well. Cotton yarn is ideal for a structured look, while acrylic yarn provides softness and flexibility.
- Color Variations: Feel free to experiment with different shades of yellow and brown to create a unique banana bag that stands out!
- Adding Embellishments: Consider adding small crochet flowers or leaves to the bag for an extra touch of flair.
- Care Instructions: Always wash your bag gently by hand or on a delicate cycle to preserve its shape and color.
🧵Pattern FAQs
I would avoid chunky yarn for this bag, unless you want it to be an oversized crochet sling bag.
Of course! I usually make my handles out of crochet, but you can always add on a different handle if you want it to be stronger.
When the bag is done, lay it down over fabric, then cut out 2 fabric pieces that are the shape of the bag, just make sure that they are slightly bigger than the actual bag. Sew the 2 pieces of fabric together either by hand or machine then sew to the inner top of the bag.
