My Crochet Axolotl Coaster Pattern is a perfect way to accessorize your morning cup of coffee. This silly coaster with a giant grin will surely make you smile.

    Finished crochet axolotl coaster.

I love axolotls, but my child is OBSESSED with them! They are super cute and look so funny with their grins going across their entire face. Also fun fact, did you know that axolotls are native to Mexico? They are also printed on their 50 peso bill. I don;t know about you but I would love it if I had money with axolotls on it.

So here is my ode to the cute and awkward axolotl - a somewhat large axolotl crochet coaster. I say large because it's about 5 inches in diameter with its face frills, so it should fit a variety of coffee cup sizes.

If you enjoy making crochet coasters, I do have a few crochet coaster patterns available that you might be interested in making. Another fun animal you can add to your coasters is my crochet capybara coaster. They are also native to Mexico and central and south America. Another aquatic animal you can make is my crochet frog coaster pattern and then pair it with my crochet lily coaster pattern.

Let's get started on the making this cute coaster!

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Use cotton yarn for the axolotl crochet pattern, if you use acrylic yarn, you can turn the coasters into a cute crochet axolotl applique. Perfect for blankets and other decorative elements that don't require the piece to be absorbent.
    2. This pattern is perfect to learn how to crochet coasters for intermediate crocheters because it is in the round and only 4 rounds. And it is a simple circle pattern until the axolotl elements come in the last round.
    3. The finished axolotl crochet coaster is roughly 4.5-5 inches wide, you can always alter the hook size if you want the axolotl crochet coaster bigger or smaller.

🍵Instructions for Crochet Axolotl Coaster Pattern

This pattern is made in rounds. I will show you how to crochet an axolotl coaster for beginners.

First round of crochet for the coaster.

Round 1: Using the coral yarn, make a magic ring and immediately chain 2. Then dc x12 into the magic ring. To secure the round, sl st to the 1st dc in the round (12).

Second round of crochet for the coaster.

Round 2: Ch x2, then dc inc in every stitch from the previous round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (24).

Third round of crochet for the coaster.

Round 3: Ch x2, then dc inc, dc and repeat for the rest of the round. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (36).

Finished base for the crochet axolotl coaster.

Round 4: This is the last round for the axolotl coaster and will help create its overall shape. Pay close attention to the stitch that you are on.

Sc x13, sc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, hdc inc, sc x8, hdc inc, hdc, dc, dc inc, dc, hdc, sc inc, sc, sl st to beginning (42). Then fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

    Crochet Axolotl Frills:

Showing you the halfway point of the coaster.

Look at the halfway point on your axolotl coaster. There should be a sc inc on either side of the face.

    Starting the axolotl face frills.

Join the red yarn to the sc inc on either side. *Then ch x4,

    Starting the axolotl face frills.

in the second ch from the hook make a sc. Sc 2 more times into the next 2 chains. Then sl st back to the base of the axolotl in the same stitch.

One side of frills are done.

Then sl st to the next stitch and repeat from * 2 more times. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

It doesn't really matter where you place the frills, but make sure you do it on the same stitches across from each other on the face so the face is symmetrical.

If you want, you can use black yarn and make little eyes on opposite sides of the second or third round, and then make a large grin underneath it.

And now your crochet axolotl coaster is done! I hope you enjoyed the coaster pattern!

If you have leftover cotton yarn you can make some crochet 6 petal flower coasters or some crochet cherry blossom coasters.

If you have leftover red cotton and some white cotton yarn you can also make some crochet strawberry coasters and crochet apple coasters.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • If you want the back of the coaster to be less messy from the embroidery, slide the yarn underneath the stitches on the back of the coaster until you get to the next embroidery spot so it is less noticeable on the back. Just make sure the yarn doesn't show on the front.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

What if I didn’t use cotton for the coaster?

Do not fret! Although I do not recommend it being a coaster if it is not made out of cotton, you can have it be a decorative piece for blankets, cardigans etc.

Can I glue a non-slip backing to the back of the axolotl crochet coaster so it doesn’t slide around?

It isn’t necessary to do so, but if you feel like it would help your crochet coasters from slipping around on your desk give it a shot!

Can I use any yarn besides cotton for the coasters?

Wool is a good alternative since it is heat resistant, water absorbent and antimicrobial. But cotton is still best in my opinion. I haven’t worked with bamboo or hemp yarn but since they are natural fibers they should have similar absorbent qualities.
