While crochet sling bags are very stylish right now, I wanted to make one that was more my style -one that elevated the basic crochet sling bag and made it more fun and exciting. I have always thought that sling bags look like bananas, and that's where the idea eventually came from. The perfect place to wear the crochet fruit bag is obviously in the grocery store!

🍵Instructions for Crochet Banana Bag Pattern
Solid Granny Squares:
Make x4.
This part of the crochet banana bag pattern is worked in rounds.
Round 1: Using the yellow, make a mr, ch x3 (counts as a dc) and then dc x2 in to the circle. Ch x2, *dc x3, ch x2 and repeat from * 2 more times. Then sl st to the beginning chains. You should have 4 sides. Pull the magic circle closed to form a square.
Round 2-5: Ch x3. Dc in to each dc stitch from the previous round, dc x2, ch x2, dc x2 in each ch x2 corner space.
When you get to the end of each round, sl st to the beginning chains. After the last round fasten off and weave in any tails.

Small Banana Spot:
Make x2.
Round 1: Using the brown yarn, make a mr and make sc x6 in the circle (6). Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Large Banana Spot:
Make x1.
Round 1: Using the brown yarn, make a mr and make sc x6 in the circle (6).
Round 2: Inc in every sc (12). Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Small Banana Stem End:
This is for the bottom end of the banana.
Row 1: Using the brown, ch x12 and then starting in the second ch from the hook, sc x11 (11). Ch x1 and turn.
Row 2: Dec, sc x7, dec (9). Ch x1 and turn.
Row 3: Dec, sc x5, dec (7). Fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. You can also add 1 more row if you feel it's too small.
Large Banana Stem End:
This is the stem end of the banana.
Row 1: Using the brown yarn, ch x16 and then starting in the second ch from the hook, sc x15 (15). Ch x1 and turn.
Row 2: Dec, sc x11, dec (13). Ch x1 and turn.
Row 3: Sc in every stitch. Ch x1 and turn.
Row 4: Dec, sc x9, dec (11). Ch x1 and turn.
Row 5: Sc in every stitch (11). Ch x1 and turn.
Row 6: Dec, sc x7, dec (9). Ch x1 and turn.
Row 7: Sc in every stitch (9). Fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Sewing:
Sew the yellow squares together as shown in the picture. I just did a simple whip stitch but do whatever sewing technique you like. You want to fold the 2 squares on the end to become triangles, so half of the square is on the front and back. If you want to add a zipper and have the bag open like a traditional sling bag, leave the top open.
Alternatively, you could opt for a smaller opening. Just sew the top of the bag closed and leave one of the side seams open.
- Sew the small and large dots to the banana.
- Fold the small banana stem in half then sew to the lower portion of the banana. Make sure it is nice and secure.
- Fold the large banana stem in half then sew to the upper portion of the banana.
Handle:
You can either buy a strap for your banana bag, or make one.
If you want to make the banana bag strap, this is what I do:
With black yarn, ch x6, make a sc in the second stitch from the hook. Then sc for the rest of the row (5). Then ch x1 and turn. Sc in every stitch (5). Repeat until the handle is the length you want (100 rows is roughly the length you want) and then sew it to the bag ends.
All you have to do now is line the crochet bag (optional) and add a zipper! You can use regular thread and needle for this.
And now you have your very own crochet sling bag that looks like a banana. The perfect crochet market bag to go to the grocery store. Everyone will look at you and ask where you got your very cool and original crochet banana bag from!

- How to Add a Liner: Lay the bag down over fabric and cut out two pieces that are slightly larger than the actual crochet banana bag. Sew them together, attach them to the inside of the bag, and then add a zipper!

I would avoid chunky yarn for this bag, unless you want it to be an oversized crochet sling bag.
Of course! I usually make my handles out of crochet, but you can always add on a different handle if you want it to be stronger.
When the bag is done, lay it down over fabric, then cut out 2 fabric pieces that are the shape of the bag, just make sure that they are slightly bigger than the actual bag. Sew the 2 pieces of fabric together either by hand or machine then sew to the inner top of the bag.
