Add a bit of freshness and zing to your wardrobe with this cute Orange Crochet Bag Pattern! It's a perfectly adorable crochet accessory for spring and summer.

    Finished crochet orange bag.

Itโ€™s no secret that I love making bags that look like food, like my Crochet Strawberry Bag and Crochet Dumping Bag. So, it was only a matter of time before I made one that looks like an orange.

And itโ€™s perfect timingโ€”Chinese New Year is tomorrow, and oranges are believed to signify good luck and happiness! If you're not interested in crocheting a bag, why not crochet an orange to give out to friends and family instead?

This crochet orange bag pattern is easy to make and perfect for beginners. Itโ€™s constructed in three simple parts, and the best part? No sewing is required! You can complete this pattern in just a few hours. The most challenging aspect is simply keeping your stitch count accurate in the orange circle rounds.

    So let's begin!

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Choice: I chose a more coral/orange color to give the bag a softer look compared to a bright orange or carrot shade. However, you can use any orange yarn that suits your preference.
    2. Size: The crochet orange bag pattern is approximately 8 inches in diameter.
    3. Continuous Circle Method: This orange crochet bag pattern is created using the continuous circle method, so thereโ€™s no need for slip stitching and chaining between rounds. My crochet frog bag pattern also uses this method.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Coral colored yarn from Big Twist at Joanns. Otherwise any orange would work
    • Medium Thyme Yarn from Red Heart
    • White Yarn from Red Heart
    • Cornmeal Yarn from Red Heart
    • 4.5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring - mr
    • Chain - ch
    • Slip stitch - sl st
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Double crochet - dc
    • Double Crochet Increase - dc inc
    • Half double crochet - hdc
    • Triple crochet - tr

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

I made the flower and the leaf into crochet bag charms, but feel free to sew them onto the bag if you would prefer that.

๐ŸตInstructions for Orange Crochet Bag Pattern

This part of the orange crochet bag pattern is made mostly in the round, while the handle is made in rows.

Starting round of the crochet orange bag.

Round 1: Make a mr and dc x12 (do not make chains first, we want the middle to look like it's swirling from the center). (12)

2 rounds into the crochet orange bag.

Round 2: Dc Inc in every stitch (24).

A few rounds into the crochet orange bag pattern.

Round 3: Dc Inc, dc, then repeat for the entire round. (36)

Round 4: Dc Inc, dc x2, then repeat for the entire round. (48)

Halfway done with the crochet orange circle.

Round 5: Dc Inc, dc x3, repeat for the entire round. (60)

Round 6: Dc Inc, dc x4, repeat for the entire round. (72)

    Finished crochet orange circle.

Round 7: Dc Inc, dc x5, repeat for the entire round. (84)

Round 8: Dc Inc, dc x6, repeat for the entire round. (96)

At the end make a hdc and then a sl st for a smoother outer seem. Then fasten off the yarn.

    Make 2 orange circles.

Crocheting the two orange circles together.

Once you have made 2 orange circles you want to single crochet the edges together. To do this you want to hold the 2 circles together and line them up in relation to stitch openings. Then rejoin the orange yarn to the outer edge going through both orange circles. Then sc around the edge for about ยพ -โ…˜ of the way.

    Opening left on the bag.

You want to leave an opening about the size of a hand so you can easily grab things out of the bag.

    Start of crochet handle.

Rows 1-115: Sc x 4 on just one side of the orange (not both pieces like we just did). Then ch x1 and turn. Sc x4 and repeat.

Adjust the length of the strap as needed.

To join to the opposite side of the orange you want to crochet the handle and the top of the orange together, close to the end of the opening. When that is done, fasten off the yarn and weave in the ends.

You will do this for the other sideโ€™s handle, but rejoin the yarn on the other orange circle and repeat.

Now the bag should be done.

    Crochet Flower Bag Charm:

This pattern is made in 2 rounds.

Start of crochet yellow flower middle.

Round 1: With the yellow yarn, make a mr then sc x5 into the mr. Fasten off the yellow and join the white yarn.

    First white crochet petal finished.

Round 2: With the white yarn, ch x2 and in the same stitch make a dc, tr, tr, dc. Then ch x2 and sl st back into the same stitch.

    Finished crochet flower.

For the next 4 petals you are going to ch x2, and do the dc, tr ,tr ,dc, ch x2 and slip stitch into the next available stitch from the round below.

Finished crochet flower turned into a bag charm.

After all 5 petals are complete, slip stitch to the first petal, then chain x25 and sl st to the first ch. Fasten off the yarn and weave in any yarn tails.

    Crochet Leaf Bag Charm:

This pattern starts off as a chain but then goes completely around it.

    Green crochet chain for leaf.

    Round 1: Ch x13

Half of the crochet leaf is done.

Round 2: In the second ch from the hook make a sc. In the following chains make a hdc, dc, dc, tr, tr, tr, tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc in the remainder of the chains. Then ch x1, and flip to the other side.

    Full crochet leaf.

You will repeat the same sequence of stitches on the unworked side. Sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, tr, tr, tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc.

    Finished crochet leaf charm.

Then slip stitch to the beginning. Then chain x25 and sl st to the first ch. Fasten off the yarn and weave in any yarn tails.

Now all you have to do is add the charms to the bag and you have a cute orange crochet bag ready to go! I hope you enjoyed my orange crochet bag pattern!

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Prevent Stretching: If you plan to carry heavier items, I suggest lining the bag with fabric to prevent it from stretching out of shape. A phone or wallet should be fine without a liner.
    • Secure the Opening: When working the handle, ensure you crochet it tightly to avoid it loosening over time, especially if you use the bag frequently.
    • Bag Construction: The crochet fruit bag is made flat with no middle piece. If you'd prefer more depth, feel free to add a middle section.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

    Can I use chunky yarn?

Yes! Chunky yarn will transform the bag into a larger tote, which could be perfect if you need more space.

How do I alternatively sew on the flower and leaf?

After completing the flower and leaf (without the chain handles), leave long tails for sewing. Use a tapestry needle to whipstitch or run a stitch to sew them onto the bag, ensuring you stitch through one side only.

    Can I use alternative handles?

Absolutely! You can add store-bought handles if you prefer something stronger than crochet straps. I usually make my handles out of crochet, but you can always add on a different handle if you want it to be stronger.
