This Free Crochet Duck Pattern is perfect for spring! And it only takes a few hours to make! Making it also perfect for markets.

2 ducks are being held up to a plain background.

This free crochet duck pattern is designed to be simple, making it ideal for beginners who want to stretch their wings (heehee) and learn new skills or a more complex pattern. As long as you know the basic crochet stitches, you'll find this pattern easy to follow.

The only thing that might be tricky in this pattern is yarning under. I yarn under in a few (not all) of my plushies for a more polished look. My crochet gingerbread man plushie pattern also uses yarn under for the pattern and it looks fabulous!

My crochet panda pattern which is similar in shape, isn't made in the yarn under method so you can see the difference between how the crochet duck pattern might differ if you do the normal yarn over method.

The crochet duck pattern is perfect for those who prefer simple shapes and want something cute. Even experienced crocheters can enjoy making this charming little duck without feeling overwhelmed.

So, grab your yarn and hook, and let's get started on this adorable crochet duck pattern!

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Type: I used acrylic yarn for this easy, free crochet duck pattern. Any type of yarn will workโ€”cotton, chunky, etc. The crochet giraffe pattern uses cotton for the pattern making it nice and soft for babies and toddlers, maybe consider cotton if making for a small child.
    2. Yarn Under: I make the crochet duck pattern in yarn under, instead of yarning over when you make a sc, you go under the hook. If you choose to do normal single crochet stitches for this pattern, you will end up with a slightly different shape.
    3. Final Size: The free crochet duck pattern roughly makes a 10 inch plushie.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Red Heart Yarn - lemon
    • Red Heart Yarn - pumpkin
    • Polyfill
    • Safety eyes - 18mm
    • 4.5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle

๐Ÿ’ญ Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms)

    • Magic ring (mr)
    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Increase (inc) - 2 stitches in the same stitch
    • Chains (ch)
    • Decrease (dec) - 1 stitch in 2 stitches

    ๐Ÿง‹ Variations

    • If you want a large duck, try using a larger hook and some chunky yarn!
    • Switch up the colors for a different look. A bright yellow yarn can make the duck look more like a traditional rubber duck, while pastel colors add a cute, playful vibe.

If you have leftover orange yarn and are wanting to make another easy crochet project, check out my crochet orange pattern. Or the crochet lemon pattern for any leftover yellow yarn.

If you made a mallard and have extra yarn, try making my crochet frog pattern or crochet bear keychain pattern. Both are small and use hardly any yarn and take no time at all!

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Stuffing and Shaping: Use small amounts of stuffing at a time to maintain the crochet duck pattern's shape. Overstuffing can lead to lumps, while too little stuffing can make the duck appear deflated.
    • Stitch Markers: Place stitch markers at the beginning of each round in the crochet duck pattern. This will help you keep track of your rounds, especially when working in continuous rounds without joining.
    • Crochet a Family of Ducks: Create a family by making ducks in different sizes using various yarn weights and hook sizes for the crochet duck pattern. You can make a mama duck and a few ducklings, each slightly smaller than the last.
    • Experiment with Colors: Donโ€™t limit yourself to just white or yellow! Use fun pastel colors, or even make a rainbow duck for a whimsical touch.

    ๐Ÿงต Pattern FAQs

Can I use a different yarn for the crochet duck pattern?

Yes! Any type of yarn will work for the crochet duck pattern. Cotton, chunky yarn, or even specialty yarns can add a unique touch. Just make sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.

How can I make the crochet duck pattern bigger or smaller?

To make a larger duck, use a larger hook and thicker yarn, like chunky yarn. For a smaller duck, use a smaller hook and lighter yarn.

Do safety eyes need to be added at a specific point in the crochet duck pattern?

It's best to add the safety eyes before decreasing. Position them before completely closing up the head to ensure theyโ€™re securely fastened.
