If you’re looking for an easy, beginner-friendly project, this moss stitch crochet blanket is perfect for you! Whether you're making it for a newborn gift or a snuggly throw, this versatile pattern is one you'll come back to again and again.

One of the best things about the moss stitch—also known as the linen stitch or grit stitch—is how simple and soothing it is to crochet. I love the texture it creates, and I use it often! I’ve featured this stitch in several patterns, including my crochet linen stitch scarf and my crochet moss stitch scarf. It also makes a lovely appearance in my Scrapy Bohemian Pillow, giving it a touch of rustic charm.
This moss stitch blanket is a great go-to project, and what’s even better is that it can be adapted to any size. Want to make a throw? Just add more chains. Working with bulky yarn? Go for it! It’s completely customizable to your needs.

✏️ Things To Note:
- Super Beginner-Friendly: The moss stitch is created using only single crochet stitches and chain spaces. If you know how to chain and single crochet, you’re already good to go! It’s perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a relaxing, no-stress project.
- Easily Customizable: This moss stitch blanket can be made in any size and with any yarn weight. You can turn it into a baby blanket, lap throw, or even a full-sized bedspread. Just adjust your starting chain and keep crocheting until you reach the size you want.
- No Complicated Stitch Counting: Once you get the hang of the repeat, it’s very meditative—no need to constantly count stitches or rows. It’s a great “TV project” that you can work on while relaxing.

🧋Variations
- Color Changes / Striping: Switch colors every few rows for bold stripes or a color-block effect. You can also use self-striping or gradient yarns for a stunning ombré look with minimal effort.
- Use a Variegated or Gradient Yarn: Let the yarn do the work! Using a colorful yarn adds depth and interest to the simple stitch, creating a visually rich blanket without having to change yarns.
- Different Stitches: Instead of using a single crochet stitch try using a half double crochet stitch or double crochet stitch.

There are lots of ways to finish off your blanket. You can simply weave in the ends and leave it borderless for a clean, modern look. Or, like I did, try the crochet envelope border using two rounds of double crochet for a neat frame. One of my lovely followers shared a great tip: if your border starts to ripple, just drop a hook size for those edging rounds!
Looking to add a bit more personality? Other great finishing options include a single crochet border, a crochet wave border, or even a playful crochet pom pom border. However you finish it, your crochet moss stitch blanket is sure to be cherished.
🐌Expert Tips
- Use a Stitch Marker on the First Row: The moss stitch is simple, but those first few rows can feel a little tricky while you’re getting the rhythm down. Use a stitch marker to mark the first and last stitch of your row so you don’t accidentally add or skip stitches.
- Don’t Crochet Too Tightly: The moss stitch needs a bit of space to shine. If your stitches are feeling stiff, try going up a hook size. A looser tension will help the fabric stay soft and drapey—especially important if you're making a moss stitch crochet baby blanket.
- Watch Your Corners (If Adding a Border): When adding a crochet border for moss stitch blanket, especially one like the crab stitch or double crochet envelope style, make sure you place 3 stitches in each corner. This helps keep the edges flat and prevents curling or puckering.
- Block It: Blocking your finished crochet moss stitch blanket helps even out the stitches and gives your blanket a polished, professional look—especially if you used natural fibers like cotton or wool.
