If you’re looking for an easy, beginner-friendly project, this moss stitch crochet blanket is perfect for you! Whether you're making it for a newborn gift or a snuggly throw, this versatile pattern is one you'll come back to again and again.

    Finished moss stitch crochet blanket.

One of the best things about the moss stitch—also known as the linen stitch or grit stitch—is how simple and soothing it is to crochet. I love the texture it creates, and I use it often! I’ve featured this stitch in several patterns, including my crochet linen stitch scarf and my crochet moss stitch scarf. It also makes a lovely appearance in my Scrapy Bohemian Pillow, giving it a touch of rustic charm.

This moss stitch blanket is a great go-to project, and what’s even better is that it can be adapted to any size. Want to make a throw? Just add more chains. Working with bulky yarn? Go for it! It’s completely customizable to your needs.

If you’re looking for a thicker blanket—especially for those chilly winter days or as a soft baby play mat—check out my Crochet Linen Baby Blanket with a crab stitch edging. It’s plush, warm, and has a beautiful texture. Don’t forget, the right crochet border for moss stitch blanket can really elevate the final look! Whether you want a simple edge or something more decorative, keep reading for tips on finishing your moss stitch blanket in style.

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Super Beginner-Friendly: The moss stitch is created using only single crochet stitches and chain spaces. If you know how to chain and single crochet, you’re already good to go! It’s perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a relaxing, no-stress project.
    2. Easily Customizable: This moss stitch blanket can be made in any size and with any yarn weight. You can turn it into a baby blanket, lap throw, or even a full-sized bedspread. Just adjust your starting chain and keep crocheting until you reach the size you want.
    3. No Complicated Stitch Counting: Once you get the hang of the repeat, it’s very meditative—no need to constantly count stitches or rows. It’s a great “TV project” that you can work on while relaxing.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Loops and thread - amethyst (1 or more depending on size)
    • Loops and thread - white (1)
    • 5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Chain (ch)
    • Single crochet (sc)

    🧋Variations

    • Color Changes / Striping: Switch colors every few rows for bold stripes or a color-block effect. You can also use self-striping or gradient yarns for a stunning ombré look with minimal effort.
    • Use a Variegated or Gradient Yarn: Let the yarn do the work! Using a colorful yarn adds depth and interest to the simple stitch, creating a visually rich blanket without having to change yarns.
    • Different Stitches: Instead of using a single crochet stitch try using a half double crochet stitch or double crochet stitch.

🍵Instructions for Moss Stitch Crochet Blanket Pattern

The finished size of the blanket without the border is roughly 25 inches by 25 inches. With border and blocking it is closer to 30 inches by 30 inches.

    Crochet chain.

    Foundation Row:
Ch x100 (must be an even number).

Starting the first row of the moss stitch.

Row 1: With the color yarn, sc in the 4th ch from the hook.

Starting the first row of the moss stitch.

*Then make a chain, skip a chain, and make a sc in the following ch.

Finished first row of the moss stitch.

Repeat from * for the rest of the row. Then ch x2 and turn.

Second row of the moss stitch.

Row 2: Skip the first sc in the row below, and in the ch space make a sc. Then ch x1, skip the sc from the row below and make a sc in the next ch space.

Repeat from * for the rest of the round.

    Starting the white row.

Then fasten off the colored yarn and add the white yarn. Ch x2 and turn.

    Moss stitch in white.

Row 3: Repeat row 2 but in white. Then fasten off the white yarn and join the color yarn. THen ch x2 and turn.

    Finished panel of moss stitch.

Row 4-5: Repeat row 2 but with the colorful yarn. Then fasten off the color yarn and ch x2.

For the rest of the blanket repeat row 3-5 until you reach desired length. For my blanket I crocheted 105 rows.

And now you’ve finished your beautiful moss stitch crochet blanket! Whether you made it as a thoughtful gift or a cozy addition to your own home, this simple pattern creates a stunning result every time.

There are lots of ways to finish off your blanket. You can simply weave in the ends and leave it borderless for a clean, modern look. Or, like I did, try the crochet envelope border using two rounds of double crochet for a neat frame. One of my lovely followers shared a great tip: if your border starts to ripple, just drop a hook size for those edging rounds!

Looking to add a bit more personality? Other great finishing options include a single crochet border, a crochet wave border, or even a playful crochet pom pom border. However you finish it, your crochet moss stitch blanket is sure to be cherished.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Use a Stitch Marker on the First Row: The moss stitch is simple, but those first few rows can feel a little tricky while you’re getting the rhythm down. Use a stitch marker to mark the first and last stitch of your row so you don’t accidentally add or skip stitches.
    • Don’t Crochet Too Tightly: The moss stitch needs a bit of space to shine. If your stitches are feeling stiff, try going up a hook size. A looser tension will help the fabric stay soft and drapey—especially important if you're making a moss stitch crochet baby blanket.
    • Watch Your Corners (If Adding a Border): When adding a crochet border for moss stitch blanket, especially one like the crab stitch or double crochet envelope style, make sure you place 3 stitches in each corner. This helps keep the edges flat and prevents curling or puckering.
    • Block It: Blocking your finished crochet moss stitch blanket helps even out the stitches and gives your blanket a polished, professional look—especially if you used natural fibers like cotton or wool.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

What stitch is used in this crochet blanket?

The moss stitch is made using a simple repeat of single crochet stitches and chain spaces. It’s also known as the linen stitch or grit stitch, so if you've seen those names, they’re all the same technique!

Can I use any yarn for this pattern?

Yes! One of the best things about this moss stitch blanket free pattern is that it works with any yarn weight. Just adjust your hook size accordingly. Bulky yarn makes a thick, cozy blanket, while lighter yarns create a soft and breathable one.

How do I resize the blanket?

Super easy—just start with an even number of chains to make the foundation row as wide as you want. Then repeat the stitch pattern until it reaches your desired length.
