It’s getting cold, and what’s better than crocheting a new scarf with the Crochet Houndstooth Pattern? This fabric pattern has a crochet twist that you’ll love.
One of my all-time favorite patterns is houndstooth. It can be dressed up for a classic look or used casually for a more edgy, punk style, depending on your ensemble. It’s perfect for anyone to wear!
Although the crochet houndstooth pattern looks complicated, it is actually quite simple. As long as you know how to do double crochet and single crochet, you’re good to go.
If you’ve ever done the lemon peel or seed stitch, this is very similar, except it changes the yarn color every row so the design shows through.

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Type: I used acrylic for the crochet houndstooth scarf, but you can use any yarn type. Wool would be a nice touch, as it is meant to keep you extra warm. Just avoid blanket or fuzzy yarn, as the design can get lost.
- Color Choices: The colors I used for the houndstooth scarf were black and white. You can use any colors you like; just remember to switch the yarn color after every row.
- Dimensions: The finished scarf is about 6 feet long and 6 inches wide. If you need more or less length or width, adjust the beginning chains or the number of rows you add.
🪡 Materials Needed
- 1 partial skein of Caron 1lb black yarn
- 1 partial skein of Caron 1lb white yarn

💭Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms)

- Single Crochet - sc
- Double Crochet - dc
🧋Variations
Once you master the crochet houndstooth stitch, you can create anything: scarves, blankets, vests, sweaters, etc. You can even crochet in the round with it, which I won’t be demonstrating here.
🍵Instructions for Crochet Houndstooth Pattern
This pattern will be worked in rows longways for the scarf.
Row 1: With black yarn, ch x200 + 1 (this is the turning ch never work in this ch).
[ Row 2: In the second ch from the hook make a sc, then make a dc in the following ch. Continue repeating sc, dc, for the entire row. (200) Fasten off the black yarn. Join the white yarn and then ch x1 and turn.
Row 3: In the second ch from the hook make a sc, then make a dc in the following ch. Continue repeating sc, dc, for the entire row. (200) Fasten off the black yarn. Join the black yarn and then ch x1 and turn.]
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for the width of scarf you would like. I did 7 rows of white and 9 rows of black.
Scarf Fringe:
For the fringe cut 32x black yarn pieces about a foot long each. And 28x white yarn pieces again about a foot long each.
Group the black yarn in groups of 2 strands and then do the same for the white.
To attach the fringe to the crochet houndstooth scarf, pinch the 2 strands of yarn at the middle and make a loop, insert a hook into the short side of the scarf,
and pull the yarn through the stitch.
Then using your fingers take the ends of the fringe and loop them through the hole you made,
and then pull tight.
Repeat the above step alternating black and white for the entire width of the scarf. Repeat on the other side of the scarf. I put 1 group of fringe per row.
After all the fringe is attached, trim the bottom so the yarn is nice and all lined up.
Now you have a beautiful crochet houndstooth scarf in black and white! Most importantly, you’ve learned the crochet houndstooth stitch, which you can use in many more projects!

🐌Expert Tips
- Using Fringe to Hide Ends: If you don’t like weaving in ends, you can always add them to the fringe at the ends of the scarf.
- Reversible Pattern: Whatever 2 colors you use for the houndstooth, one side will be dominant in one color, and the other side will feature the other color. This is just because of the way the stitches lay, so you technically have a reversible pattern.
- Managing Color Changes: To create smoother transitions between colors, ensure your last stitch of the previous color is tight. This will help keep the colors from blending together.
🧵Pattern FAQs
You can if you’d like, but the carried yarn might show and could bulk up your scarf.
Unfortunately, no. You’ll need 2 colors for the houndstooth pattern to appear. Otherwise, it will just be a bumpy texture similar to the lemon peel stitch.
The houndstooth crochet stitch alternates single crochets and double crochets, while the lemon peel pattern alternates single crochets and half double crochets.
