This is my free Crochet Cowl Pattern made with chunky yarn! It is easy to make and can be completed in just half an hour.

Chunky yarn is great because it allows you to complete larger projects in less time, especially when using a larger hook.
This crochet cowl pattern is no exception. I initially had just 1 skein of size 7 yarn and thought of all the projects I could complete with it. However, I discovered that it’s challenging to come up with a one-skein project unless you have a lot of this yarn.
Since it was fall, I settled on making a small cowl. I used Bernat size 7 yarn with an S hook. The yarn itself is so soft, even though it is acrylic, but the cowl would be amazing if made with wool roving.
The stitch I will be using today is the lemon peel stitch, which adds visual interest and is super easy to complete. I have completed other projects using the lemon peel stitch, like the Lemon Peel Blanket, but I just love this stitch so much. It’s perfect for beginners and looks lovely no matter what size yarn you use.
So without further ado, let's start making a cowl with my free crochet cowl pattern!

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Type: I used size 7 acrylic yarn for the free crochet cowl pattern. You can use any type of chunky yarn for this project as long as it’s size 7, such as acrylic or wool roving.
- Stitch Simplicity: The base of the pattern only calls for single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc). It’s super easy and perfect for beginners.
- Cowl Dimensions: The finished crochet cowl measures about 4 feet in length and 6 inches wide, allowing me to double wrap it, which is my preference.
🪡 Materials Needed
- 1-2 skeins of Lion Brand Wool Ease Wow! Yarn. I used only 1 skein but some people may want 2 to make it slightly thicker or longer.
- Size S hook (19mm)
- Tapestry or darning needle for weaving in the ends.
💭 Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Double crochet (dc)
- Chains (ch)
🧋 Variations
Try making the cowl wider or using wool roving for a lush-looking cowl.
🍵 Instructions for Crochet Cowl Pattern
This pattern is made in rows.
Row 1: With the size 7 yarn, ch x6 (6) + 1
Row 2: Starting in the second chain from the hook make a sc. Then a dc in the next stitch. The lemon peel stitch is made alternating single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) stitches.
Repeat the process of sc, dc for the rest of the row.
Ch x1 and turn. The ch is a turning ch so do not work in it. Skip over it in the next row and go directly to the last stitch worked. (6)
Row 3-40: Sc, dc and then repeat for the rest of the row. (6) Ch x1 and turn.
After the last row fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Sew the 2 ends of the scarf together and weave in the ends.
[If you feel the cowl needs additional rows feel free to add them!]
By doing 40 rows with a size S hook, you should be able to wrap the cowl around your neck twice.
Some cowls are a bit like infinity scarves but are a bit smaller and hug the neck more, like this one.
Once all the sewing is done, you are now the proud owner of a new wrap around cowl, made from my free crochet cowl pattern!

🐌Expert Tips
- Chunky Yarn Alternatives: If you don’t have size 7 yarn, consider using two strands of a smaller yarn held together to achieve a similar chunky look.
- Adjusting Length: If you prefer a longer cowl, simply add more rows. Just keep in mind that the cowl will wrap around your neck more snugly if you stick to around 40 rows.
- Color Play: Experiment with different color combinations for each row to create a striped effect, making your cowl unique!
🧵 Pattern FAQs
Yes, you can! Just be aware that you will need to adjust your starting chain and the number of rows to achieve the desired width and length. The yardage required will also change accordingly.
I would suggest 22-25 rows depending on how snug you want it and if it can fit over your head.
To increase the width of the scarf, add 2 chains or any even number of chains to your starting chain.
