Add a bit of love and cute decoration to your home by adding a crochet heart coaster to your desk or coffee table. My Crochet Heart Coaster Pattern is made in rows, making it easy to make without the pesky magic circle.
hdc = Half Double Crochet (optional- for the shell border)
sl st = Slip Stitch
Notes
Use scrap cotton yarn for small hearts; avoid acrylic as it isn't water-absorbent.
Stick to worsted weight; avoid chunky yarn for better stability.
Simple crochet heart coaster measures no larger than 4 inches.
Change colors, add a shell border or lacy edge.
Create conversation hearts by embroidering words on top.
Instructions
The crochet heart coaster pattern is made in rows.
Row 1: Ch x11, then turn.
Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, make a sc. Then sc x8 for the rest of the row (except the last chain). In the last ch make an inc. Ch x1 and turn. Do not work in the turning chain, it's just there to help you turn to the next row.
Row 3: Inc, then make a sc in every stitch for the rest of the row. (12) Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 4-7: Sc in every stitch (12). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 8: Sc x10, then make a dec for the last 2 stitches. Then ch x1 and turn (11).
Row 9: Dec, then sc x9 for the rest of the row. Then ch x1 and turn (10).
Row 10: Sc x7 (7). Then ch x1 and turn.
This row is where we start making the second side of the heart, you do not want to go completely across, only half across.
Row 11-12: Sc in every stitch (7). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 13: Dec, sc x3, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (5).
Row 14: Dec, sc x1, dec. Then ch x1 and turn (3). Now your heart is done.
If you want a cleaner edge, single crochet around the outside of the crochet heart coaster. When you get to the center of the top of the heart make a sl st a full row down (a spike slip stitch) then proceed like normal for the rest of the heart until you reach the bottom point. When you get to the bottom of the heart, sc, ch, sc, in the same stitch at the very tip.
When you are done fasten off and weave in the ends.
Optional shell border:
Join white cotton yarn (or any color) to the edge of the heart. Then *in the next stitch make 3 hdc stitches. And then a sl st in the next.Repeat from* for the rest of the round.
At the top of the heart, make a sl st into the sl st you made from the previous round. Then sl st in the next stitch, make 3 hdc stitches in the next stitch and proceed like you did earlier for the side of the heart.Try and make the bottom of the heart have a nice shell at the bottom so it has a tip. This can be fudged a bit if you don't have enough stitches to work in, as you can always do a sl st in the same stitch as the hdc stitches or where you joined the white yarn at the beginning.
