Decorate for Saint Patrick's Day with this simple and cute Free Crochet Shamrock Coaster Pattern! Start your day with a bit of luck and your morning coffee!

I love crocheting things for holidays, like my crochet jack o'lanterns for Halloween, crochet candy cane striped blanket for Christmas, and crochet heart keychains for Valentine's Day. But I always find it challenging to make things for Saint Patrick's Day.
Saint Patrick's Day falls on March 17th every year, which can sometimes coincide with other holidays like Easter, Mardi Gras, etc. This often means that by the time you make and set up decorations, it's already time to take them down for the next celebration.
During this time of year, I like to keep decorations simple so I can easily switch them out for spring festivities. This year, my favorite crochet item for Saint Patrick's Day is my crochet shamrock coasters, made using my free pattern.
The design was inspired by Valentine's Day hearts I crocheted as small gifts for my preschooler to hand out at a school party. After making a few, my kid arranged them into patterns, and I realized they resembled shamrocks!
Who knew you could make a shamrock from just a few hearts? Itโs one of the easiest ways to create that iconic shape. So, let's get started on the pattern!

โ๏ธ Things To Note:
- Yarn Choice: I used cotton yarn for the free crochet shamrock coaster pattern. I do not recommend using acrylic yarn, as it doesnโt absorb liquid well, especially condensation. If you use acrylic yarn, you can turn them into appliques! I did this for my crochet strawberry blanket pattern with my crochet strawberry coaster pattern!
- Assembly Method: This pattern is made by sewing the hearts together strategically. If you prefer, you can also crochet them together if that is easier for you.
- Finished Size: The shamrock is roughly 4.5-5.5 inches wide, making it perfect for most cups of any size.
๐ชก Materials Needed
- Cotton worsted (size #4) green yarn
- 5mm hook
- Tapestry needle
๐ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)
- Magic ring - mr
- Chains - ch
- Single Crochet - sc
- Half Double Crochet - hdc
- Double Crochet - dc
- Triple Crochet - tr
- Slip Stitch - sl st
๐งVariations
Feel free to switch out the colors if you'd like. You can also optionally crochet around the shamrock once it's sewn together for a cleaner finish.
By adding an extra heart to the shamrock, you can make a four-leaf clover version.
๐ตInstructions for Free Crochet Shamrock Coaster Pattern
This pattern is made in individual pieces and then sewn together.

Round 1: Make a mr, then ch x2 (does not count as a stitch) and dc x15 inside of the ring. Pull the ring tight, then sl st to the top of the FIRST dc you made (15).

Round 2: Ch x2 and then dc into the same stitch. Tr x4 into the next stitch. Dc x2 into the following stitch. Then make a hdc in each of the next 4 stitches.
Now we are at the bottom of the heart:
Dc, tr, dc in the next stitch (this will help create the point on the hearts bottom as well as help you turn to the other side.

Other side of the heart:
Hdc into the next 4 stitches. Dc x2 into the following stitch. Tr x4 into the next stitch. Make a dc in the next stitch. Then ch x2 and sl st over the sl st you made at the conclusion of the first round.
You should now have a heart shape. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Make 3 hearts and arrange them with pointy ends touching each other.
Sew the edges of the hearts that are touching together. I usually sew the hdc and part of the dc stitches together from the adjoining hearts.

Then after the sewing has been completed you will want to create the stem for the shamrock.
Rejoin the yarn at the base of the hearts and ch x8. Then in the second chain from the hook make a hdc. Make 6 more hdc in the chains. Then sl st to the base of the shamrock.

Sc around the shamrock (not the stem) to create a cohesive look. To make the crochet shamrock coaster lay flat, make 2 sc stitches in the tops of the tr crochet stitches. All the other stitches just need 1 sc. A sl st in the heart indents is also something you can do to add more definition in the shamrock leaves.
Fasten off and weave in any ends.
And now you have a cute crochet shamrock coaster, perfect for a Saint Patrick's Day decoration! I hope you enjoyed my free crochet shamrock coaster pattern! And now that you know how to make 1, you can make a whole set of them!

๐Expert Tips
- Use Clips or Pins for Better Alignment: When sewing the hearts together for the free crochet shamrock coaster pattern, consider using clips or pins to hold the pieces in place. This will help ensure the hearts line up neatly while you sew.
- Choose the Right Yarn for Absorbency: Natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, hemp, and wool are best for coasters since they can absorb liquids. Avoid synthetic yarns, as they tend to repel water and may not withstand heat. If you use acrylic the free crochet shamrock coaster pattern would be better suited as an applique.
- Leave Long Tails for Sewing: When fastening off the hearts for the crochet shamrock coaster, leave long tails. This makes sewing the pieces together easier and reduces the need for additional knots, which can create unwanted bulk.
- Crochet Around the Edges for a Finished Look: Crocheting around the edges of the assembled shamrock will give it a cleaner, more professional appearance. It can also help make the coaster more durable.
๐งตPattern FAQs
Yes! Just add an additional heart to the pattern to create a four-leaf version.
I recommend natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, hemp, and wool for their heat resistance and ability to absorb moisture. Synthetic yarns should be avoided as they can melt or fail to absorb liquids properly.
Pretty much! Just keep in mind the sizeโyou don't want it too small or too big, so adjust as needed.

How does one do a magic ring? Or how do u do it the other way?
Kimberly Arenas says
Magic rings also known as magic circles are how most people crochet in the round, its hard to explain how to make one since they can be tricky to make. An alternative to this is to ch x4 and then sl st to the 1st chain you made - then work inside of the circle.
Katie says
Love the pattern! When you say "crochet around the edges for a cleaner edge", do you use a specific stitch? Thanks!
Kimberly Arenas says
You can do single crochet, but if you have a different stitch in mind that can work you can do that too!
Wanda Poole says
I have used patterns for these designs through the years. Simple & โค๏ธ beautiful. Great as a ๐ pin to wear on coat. Great kitchen items. Even to make Baby's Blanket. Thanks for these reminders of beauty.
