    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Consistency in Tension: As always with crochet projects, maintaining consistent tension for the star coaster crochet pattern will give your stars a neat, even shape. If you're planning on stitching two stars together to create a crochet star pouch, make sure your stitches are uniform for a smooth result.
    2. Skill Level: This crochet star coaster pattern is suitable for beginners to intermediate crocheters. You'll be using basic stitches like chain, slip stitch, and triple crochet, so it's a great project if you're looking to expand your skills.
    3. Yarn Choice: For durability and ease of maintenance, choose a sturdy, medium-weight yarn like cotton. Cotton yarn is not only resilient but also holds its shape well over time, making it an excellent choice for projects that require both longevity and easy cleaning, such as kitchen items or home decor.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Lily Sugar n Cream - sunshine yellow
    • 5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring (mr)
    • Chains (ch)
    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Half double crochet (hdc)
    • Double crochet (dc)
    • Triple crochet (tr)
    • Slip stitch (sl st)
    • Increase (inc)

    * The ch x1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch in the round. It is just used to gain height to start the next round.

    * If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

    • Multiple Uses: Beyond just coasters, these stars can be used in a variety of ways. You can add them to garlands, turn them into appliques, or even use them as a base for larger crochet projects. The possibilities are endless!
    • Color Options: The pattern is highly customizable! You can use a single color for a simple look, or experiment with multiple colors to make your star coaster as festive as you like. Crochet Christmas coasters are perfect for seasonal decorations โ€” try using red, green, white, and gold for a Christmas theme, or red, white, and blue for a patriotic 4th of July look.

๐ŸตInstructions for Star Coaster Crochet Pattern

The star coaster crochet pattern will be in rounds. This makes a smaller coaster, perfect for standard 8-12oz cups.

First round of making a crochet star.

Round 1: Make a magic ring and immediately chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Then hdc x10 into the magic ring. To secure the round, sl st to the 1st hdc in the round (10).

Second round of making a crochet star.

Round 2: Ch x1, then hdc inc in every stitch from the previous round. Then sl st to the first hdc in the round (20).

Third round of making a crochet star.

Round 3: Ch x1, then hdc inc, hdc and repeat for the rest of the round. Then sl st to the first hdc in the round (30).

First point of the crochet star.

Round 4: * sl st, sc + hdc in one stitch, dc + tr, then ch x1, and in the next stitch tr + dc, hdc + sc, sl st *

    Finished crochet star coaster.

*Repeat 4 more times. Make sure there are 2 sl st between each star arm.

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Choose the Right Yarn: For the best results, opt for a medium-weight yarn (like Worsted weight) for your crochet star coaster pattern. This gives the star enough structure while remaining soft enough for use as a coaster. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice since it's durable and absorbent, making it perfect for coasters.
    • Avoid Tight Stitches: Make sure not to crochet too tightly, as this can distort the shape of your star and make it difficult to join the stitches properly. If you find that your star is curling or puckering, try loosening your tension a bit.
    • Blocking for Shape: If your star is a little misshapen after you finish, blocking can help you achieve a crisp, clean star shape. Just gently pin it into place and lightly steam it with an iron to set the shape.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

Can I use a different yarn weight for the star coaster crochet pattern?

Yes! While this pattern is designed with medium-weight yarn (Worsted weight) in mind, you can experiment with other yarn weights. Just remember that changing the yarn weight will affect the size of your coaster. For a smaller coaster, try using lighter yarn (like DK or sport weight), and for a larger one, use a heavier yarn (like bulky weight).

How do I make my star coaster sturdier?

If you'd like your crochet star coaster to be more rigid, you can block it by gently pinning the finished piece into shape and steaming it with an iron. You can also use a fabric stiffener to make the coaster stiffer and hold its shape better.

Can I crochet the stars together to make a pouch?

Absolutely! If you make two stars, you can crochet them together around the edges to create a crochet star pouch. This is a fun way to turn your coaster into a small gift pouch or a decorative item for storing little treasures. Just be sure to leave an opening large enough for whatever you plan to keep inside.

I made this star as my first attempt at a coaster, it came out very well. I gifted it to my co-worker who got a promotion. Another co-worker saw it and wanted one but to look like Patrick Star from Spongebob. Would you have any advice on where I should have the color change? I wanted the variety to have half the circle be green for his pants and some of the two bottom stars green with pink tips.

I would do the last half of each of the rounds in green so it creates a green line halfway through the star, then do 2 of the star points in green (maybe do shorter stitches like half double crochets. Then re-add the pink at the bottom of the tips and do hdc,dc,hdc for the pink tips? That might work out, I havent tested it.

I haven't attempted making an extra round, but hypothetically if you wanted to make this pattern bigger you can adjust each stitch to the next larger stitch. For example: Instead of doing hdc, you can make dc stitches, and instead of tr stitches you can do extended tr stitches. You just have to make sure that you adjust each stitch to correlate to the next larger stitch.

I made it bigger by making an extra round of hdc of 30 before starting points turned out perfect!

I just wanted to say that I made pouches using this pattern to sell at my schoolโ€™s market day and they all sold out! And I also made a Star garland that I used to decorate my table. Thank you for making and sharing this pattern!
