If you’re looking for an easy, beginner-friendly project, this moss stitch crochet blanket is perfect for you! Whether you're making it for a newborn gift or a snuggly throw, this versatile pattern is one you'll come back to again and again.
Super Beginner-Friendly: The moss stitch is created using only single crochet stitches and chain spaces. If you know how to chain and single crochet, you’re already good to go! It’s perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a relaxing, no-stress project.
Easily Customizable: This moss stitch blanket can be made in any size and with any yarn weight. You can turn it into a baby blanket, lap throw, or even a full-sized bedspread. Just adjust your starting chain and keep crocheting until you reach the size you want.
No Complicated Stitch Counting: Once you get the hang of the repeat, it’s very meditative—no need to constantly count stitches or rows. It’s a great “TV project” that you can work on while relaxing.
Instructions
The finished size of the blanket without the border is roughly 25 inches by 25 inches. With border and blocking it is closer to 30 inches by 30 inches.

Row 1: With the color yarn, sc in the 4th ch from the hook. *Then make a chain, skip a chain, and make a sc in the following ch. Repeat from * for the rest of the row. Then ch x2 and turn.
Row 2: Skip the first sc in the row below, and in the ch space make a sc. Then ch x1, skip the sc from the row below and make a sc in the next ch space. Repeat from * for the rest of the round. Then fasten off the colored yarn and add the white yarn. Ch x2 and turn.
Row 3: Repeat row 2 but in white. Then fasten off the white yarn and join the color yarn. THen ch x2 and turn.
Row 4-5: Repeat row 2 but with the colorful yarn. Then fasten off the color yarn and ch x2.
For the rest of the blanket repeat row 3-5 until you reach desired length. For my blanket I crocheted 105 rows.
And now you’ve finished your beautiful moss stitch crochet blanket! Whether you made it as a thoughtful gift or a cozy addition to your own home, this simple pattern creates a stunning result every time.
There are lots of ways to finish off your blanket. You can simply weave in the ends and leave it borderless for a clean, modern look. Or, like I did, try the crochet envelope border using two rounds of double crochet for a neat frame. One of my lovely followers shared a great tip: if your border starts to ripple, just drop a hook size for those edging rounds!
Looking to add a bit more personality? Other great finishing options include a single crochet border, a crochet wave border, or even a playful crochet pom pom border. However you finish it, your crochet moss stitch blanket is sure to be cherished.
