It’s time to embrace the spirit of the spooky season and make a Crochet Halloween Blanket! In this post, we’ll guide you through creating a charming crochet blanket that’s sure to add a touch of festive flair to your home.
Do you love Halloween? I sure do! I love all the decorations and costumes everyone wears. This is also the time of year when more crochet projects start popping up, and I am here for it! Especially if its more cute than spooky!
Featuring adorable crochet ghost appliques and sweet crochet candy appliques, this Crochet Halloween Blanket Pattern is perfect for cozying up on chilly October nights. Plus, we'll finish it off with a delightful, modified crochet bobble border that adds an extra pop of texture.
The ghost appliques will look very familiar to you if you have checked out my crochet ghost garland pattern since it uses the exact same pattern for all of the ghosts that are wearing Halloween costumes.
While the crochet ghost blanket largely uses ghosts and candies as accents, you can add in other Halloween elements like my crochet pumpkin coasters which would be great as an applique.
Get ready to unleash your creativity and make a crochet Halloween blanket that will be the highlight of your autumn decor!

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Choice: I used acrylic yarn to crochet this blanket, but you can use any yarn fiber you prefer. This Crochet Halloween Blanket should work well with any yarn type and thickness, so feel free to experiment.
- Design & Customization: The blanket is a basic double crochet pattern with added appliques on top to give it a Halloween theme. It's similar to my crochet sunflower blanket pattern, where the appliques add a seasonal touch, making it feel like the beginning of fall. You can place the appliques wherever you like on the blanket to create your own unique design!
- Finished Size & Adjustments: The finished crochet blanket measures approximately 40 inches by 40 inches, making it perfect for a small throw or lap blanket. If you want a larger blanket, add more starting chains or additional rows as needed. You may also need to create extra crochet ghosts and candy appliques to ensure they fit nicely on a larger blanket.

🍵Instructions for Crochet Halloween Blanket Pattern
Crochet Double Crochet Blanket Base:
Row 1: In black, ch x127 and turn.
Row 2: In the 3rd ch from the hook make a dc. Then continue making a dc stitch in each ch stitch for the rest of the row. Then ch x2 and turn. (125)
Row 3-71: Skip the 2 ch stitches you made and make a dc in the last dc you made in the previous row. Then make dc stitches for the rest of the row. Then ch x2 and turn. (125)
After you are done with the last row, you want to go around your entire project with a round of sc stitches. This will help keep your bobble border (which you will make next) look uniform throughout the piece. In each corner of the blanket sc x3.
Fasten off the black yarn.
Crochet Bobble Border:
Join your green yarn anywhere on the sc border and ch x1. Make a *bobble stitch*
*A bobble stitch is made by yarning over, inserting the hook into the stitch, yarn over, draw loop back through stitch, yarn over pull through 2 loops then STOP. You will have a half completed dc hanging from your hook. Repeat the steps 4 more times until you have 5 half completed dc stitches hanging from your hook and 6 loops ON your hook. Then yarn over and pull through all 6 loops.*
After creating a bobble stitch, make a single crochet (sc) in the next stitch space. Then, work a single crochet in the following four stitches (5 sc total).
Next, add another bobble stitch. Continue alternating between bobble stitches and 5 single crochets to finish the border.
If your last few stitches don’t create an even set of 5 sc, feel free to adjust them slightly; it won’t be noticeable!
This is what the front side of the crochet blanket looks like. The bobbles puff to the correct side so make sure you add appliques to this side.
If you prefer a more textured look, you can add additional bobble stitches to the border.
Once you are at the end of the border, join to the beginning ch in the round and fasten off the yarn.
Crochet Ghost Applique Pattern:
If you would like a more detailed crochet tutorial with pictures and video for the plain ghost, visit my crochet ghost coaster pattern.
My pattern uses 10 crochet ghosts, 1 of each of the ghosts in costumes and the rest are plain ghosts.
Row 1: With white yarn, ch x7, then in the second ch from the hook make a sc. Then sc for the rest of the row (6). After, ch x1 and turn.
Row 2: Sc inc, sc x4, sc inc (8). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 3: Sc inc, sc x6, sc inc (10). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 4: Sc inc, sc x8, sc inc (12). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 5-13: Sc in every stitch (12). Then ch x1 and turn, except for the last row. For the last row, do not ch x1 - just turn.
Row 14: Skip the first stitch and make 5x dc in the second stitch. Then skip the next stitch and make a sc in the following stitch. You just made your first shell for the bottom of the ghost. Repeat the above process 2 more times to finish off the row.
After the 3 shell stitches are made, sc around the sides and top of the ghost. You want to make a sc for every row you made, as well as 1 sc for every stitch you did at the top. This will help your ghost have a cleaner edge. Then sl st to where the shell stitch row begins and fasten off. Do not crochet around the shell stitches.
Embroidery:
Now with the black yarn or black embroidery floss, embroider the eyes and mouth on the 7 and 8th rows of the ghost pattern. Alternatively, you can also use fabric paint if you don’t feel like doing embroidery work.
And now you have a completed crochet ghost pattern! See below for more additional ghost costumes.
Crochet Ghost with Witches Hat:
Follow the ghost pattern above. Then make the witches hat.
Witches Hat:
Row 1: With the purple yarn, ch x2 and then in the second ch from the hook make a sc inc. Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 2: Sc inc, sc. Then ch x1 and turn (3).
Row 3: Sc inc, sc x2. Then ch x1 and turn (4).
Row 4: Sc inc, sc x3. Then ch x1 and turn (5).
Row 5: Sc inc, sc x4. Then ch x1 and turn (6).
Row 6: Sc inc, sc x5. Switch the color to black yarn by pulling up black yarn for the last stitch. Then ch x1 and turn (7).
Row 7: With the black yarn sc x7, then switch the yarn color back to purple at the end of this row (7). In preparation for the next row, ch x2 in purple.
Row 8: Sc inc in the second chain from the hook. Then sc x7 and ch x2. Then instead of turning it and starting a new row, you are going to turn it the other way so you are working next to the black row (but still in the purple chains). Sc inc in the second ch and after that make a sl st in the corner where the black and purple yarn meet.
The reason we made the hat brim this way is so that the hat brim is even. Fasten off the purple yarn but leave a tail for sewing. Sew the witch hat to the top right or left side of the ghost.
Crochet Ghost with Pumpkin:
Follow the ghost pattern above. Then make the mini crochet pumpkin.
Crochet Pumpkin:
With the orange yarn make a mr, then sl st, dc x2, tr x2, dc x2, sl st, dc x2, tr x2, dc x2 and then sl st to the circle. Pull the mr tight and fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Crochet Pumpkin Stem:
Join the brown yarn to the sl st you last made. Then ch x2 and sl st in the second ch from the hook. Make a sl st back to the pumpkin and fasten off. Weave in any ends.
Sew the pumpkin to the lower half of the crochet ghost.
Crochet Frankenstein Ghost:
Follow the ghost pattern above but in green.
Join the purple yarn to the sc on the outside of row 6. And sc x2 along the edge going down towards the bottom of the ghost. Then ch x1 and turn. Sc x2 and fasten off the yarn. Weave in any ends and do the same for the other side of the ghost.
Then using some more purple yarn or purple embroidery thread, embroider fake stitches and patches on the ghost. If you want you can also use fabric paint to do this if you have a steady hand and prefer not to embroider.
Crochet Pirate Ghost:
Follow the ghost pattern above but do the first 3 rounds of the ghost pattern in red. Then switch the color to white and finish the ghost.
When you are crocheting around the edge of the ghost, switch the white to red to crochet the outside of the red bandana. Then when you get to the other side of the bandana follow these instructions:
In the last stitch available for the red yarn make a sl st, and then ch x3. In the 2nd ch from the hook make a hdc, then sl st in the next ch and sl st back to the same stitch. Repeat for meth ch x3 onwards for the second bandana end. Then fasten off the red yarn and switch it back to white to finish crocheting the ghosts' side.
Crochet Eyepatch:
Make a mr and hdc x4 in it. Then pull it tight and fasten off. Sew the eyepatch over the left eye and add embroidery from the sides of the ghosts face to the eyepatch to complete it.
Crochet Vampire Ghost:
Follow the ghost pattern above but embroider teeth with the mouth.
If you have difficulty with the wings having large gaps between stitches, crochet these with a tighter tension, or if it's available a smaller hook.
Crochet Bat Wings:
With the purple yarn, ch x5 and then in the 3rd ch from the hook make a dc and then a picot stitch.
A picot stitch is where you ch x3 and then make a sl st in the 3rd ch.
Then make a dc in the same stitch where you made the first dc.
In the next stitch make a dc, picot, and dc.
In the last stitch make a dc, picot, and dc x3. Then fasten off the yarn with a tail for sewing.
Make another bat wing, then sew the bat wings on the ghost on rows 7 and 8.
Crochet Candy Applique Pattern:
This part of the pattern uses bright colorful scraps of yarn and is made in rounds and not rows. The blanket I made has 10 candy appliques on it.
Round 1: Make a mr and sc x6 inside of it. Then pull tight and join the circle together with a sl st (6).
Round 2: Sc inc for the entire round (12).
Round 3: Sc inc, then sc. Repeat for the entire round (18).
Round 4: Sc inc, then sc x2. Repeat for the entire round (24). After completing this round, fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Crochet Candy Wrapper Ends:
Join a different colored scrap yarn to anywhere on the edge of the crochet circle, then ch x3. In the same stitch you joined the yarn to, make a tr, dc x3, tr and ch x3. Make a sl st back into the same stitch. Then fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Skip 11 stitches and repeat the above process to the opposite side of the crochet candy applique.
Assembly:
After you’ve created all the crochet ghosts and candy appliqués, you can sew them onto the top of the crochet blanket however you like.
I arranged my ghosts in a 2-3-2-3 pattern, mixing regular ghosts with those dressed in costumes. For the candy pattern, I used a 3-2-3-2 pattern. I staggered the candy and ghosts to add a more dynamic look to the design.
Once all the sewing is complete, your Crochet Halloween Blanket is ready! This cozy crochet ghost blanket is perfect for snuggling up while enjoying your favorite spooky Halloween movies.

🐌Expert Tips
- Weaving in Ends: For a cleaner look, weave your yarn ends behind a few stitches at the back of the ghost, ensuring they aren’t visible from the front.
- Face Embroidery: When embroidering the ghost’s face, using a smaller needle can help with precision.
- Prevent Curling: If your crochet appliques tend to curl, it's likely due to uneven tension. Aim to maintain uniform stitch sizes for the best results.
- Hiding Ends: If the backside of the Crochet Halloween Blanket Pattern looks messy after sewing all the appliques on, feel free to sew a fleece lining to the back of the blanket. As a bonus this will not only secure and cover the backside of your blanket but will give the crochet blanket an additional layer of added warmth!
🧵Pattern FAQs
Crocheted appliqués are diminutive, flat adornments that can be affixed to broader crocheted works for decorative purposes like blankets and pillows.
Use yarn that matches the color of the appliqué to sew its edges to the blanket. Ensure that both the blanket and the appliqué are laid out flat during the sewing process.
Absolutely, double crochet stitches are ideal for blankets as they are significantly taller than single crochet stitches, allowing for a quicker work-up.
