What better way to welcome autumn and Halloween than to make a monster hat from my free Crochet Monster Hat Pattern? It’s the perfect crochet accessory for October.

    Finished crochet monster hat.

My kid, the coolest and sweetest around, has been wanting me to make him a crochet monster hat for a while. At first, he wanted me to create several different types of monsters, but we finally settled on a simple monster face with two mismatched eyes and some creepy sharp teeth.

Truth be told, I never make hats in the round. I prefer making them in a rectangle and cinching them, but I knew the best way to do the crochet monster hat pattern was by making it in the round.

The yarn is a very soft, flexible, fuzzy yarn, and I wasn’t sure how it would hold up to being pulled. However, by working in the round, I didn’t have to test the integrity of the fuzzy yarn, especially since it's vintage and discontinued.

My kid has worn this hat a few times now, and it still seems to be holding up! Another great Halloween hat is my Free Crochet Witch Hat Pattern which can be made for either kids or adults.

So, without further ado, let's start making a monster hat with my free Crochet Monster Hat Pattern!

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Type: The main yarn I used was Grape TLC Amore acrylic yarn from Red Heart, which is discontinued. You can substitute any type of size 4 yarn for this hat; chenille or velvet yarns will give a similar look.
    2. Skill Level: The base of the crochet monster hat pattern only requires single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc), making it super easy and perfect for beginners.
    3. Size Adjustments: The finished crochet monster hat pattern fits a child's size. Adjust as needed. I will post the adult size below, but please modify it as necessary.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • 1 skein of Grape, TLC Amore by Red Heart (I understand this yarn is discontinued so any soft slightly fuzzy yarns could replace it or another size 4 yarn of your choosing)
    • Small amounts of white yarn, black yarn and green yarn.
    • H hook (5mm)
    • Tapestry or darning needle for weaving in the ends.

💭 Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms)

    • Magic ring (mr)
    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Double crochet (dc)
    • Chains (ch)
    • Slip Stitch (sl st)

    🧋 Variations

Add more eyes, make fewer teeth or more teeth, add horns if you want, or change the color of the monster - the possibilities are endless!!

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Choose Soft Yarn: Use soft, flexible yarns like chenille or velvet for comfort and a similar look.
    • Practice the Magic Ring: Familiarize yourself with this technique for a neat center; alternatively, chain 3 and crochet into the third chain for an easier option.
    • Customize Your Hat: Add unique features like horns or extra eyes, and adjust size by adding extra rounds of increases.
    • Secure and Care: Ensure eyes and teeth are sewn on securely, and hand wash the hat, laying it flat to dry to maintain its shape.

    🧵 Pattern FAQs

I don't have yarn similar to the tlc amore yarn, what can I use instead?

You can use regular worsted weight yarn, or you can use velvet yarn for a similar effect.

What size does the hat fit?

Roughly a size child small/medium. If needed to go larger add one to two extra rows of increases.

How fast can the monster hat be completed?

I can complete one in about an hour and a half due to sewing on the face.
