This cute crochet bat bag pattern is perfect for trick-or-treating on Halloween! Plus, you can use this crochet Halloween tote bag all October long.

I love Halloween, and now that I have a child, I get to go trick-or-treating again! I enjoy dressing up and going door-to-door for candy, but I often forget to bring a bag for myself, leading me to encroach on my son's trick-or-treat bag. Not this year! I decided to make my own Crochet Bat Bag Pattern for my candy stash.
The crochet Halloween treat bag pattern is quite simple to make. You start with a chain and work in continuous rounds, so thereโs minimal sewing required. The only sewing outside of sewing the appliques onis for attaching the handle and appliques to the bag, similar to my Japanese knot bag crochet pattern!

โ๏ธ Things To Note:
- Yarn Choice. I used acrylic worsted weight yarn for the crochet bat bag pattern, but any yarn type can work.
- Adjusting Size. To make the crochet bat bag bigger, start with more beginning chains.
- Bag and Handle Dimensions. The finished croceht bat bag measures roughly 12 inches (excluding handles). You can extend the handles for a shoulder strap by adding more rows, similar to my crochet orange bag pattern.
๐ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)
- Chain - ch
- Single crochet - sc
- Increase - inc
- Magic ring - mr
- Double crochet - dc
- Triple crochet - tr
- Slip stitch - sl st
* The ch x1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch in the row, it is a turning chain.
* If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

Lay out your appliquรฉs as shown in the reference photo. Sew them onto the front of the tote bag.
Once the appliquรฉs are in place, attach the handles to the top of the bag. Make sure theyโre evenly spaced and securely sewn.
Weave in any remaining ends.
Optional: Add a Fabric Liner
If you'd like to line your tote:
- Lay the bag over two layers of fabric.
- Cut out a rectangle slightly larger than the bag (to allow for seam allowance).
- Sew the two fabric pieces together, either by hand or with a sewing machine.
- Sew the liner to the inside top edge of the crochet bag.
If you want, you can also add extra appliques like pumpkins by using my crochet pumpkin coaster pattern as an applique.
With any leftover purple yarn, try my crochet spider pattern for more Halloween decor or to use as part of your costume like with my crochet witch hat pattern. Alternatively, you can make a tiny crochet crow with leftover black yarn.
I hope you enjoyed making my crochet bat bag!

๐Expert Tips
- Secure Appliques Properly: When attaching appliques, ensure you only stitch through the front panel of the bag to avoid sewing it shut.
- Add Reinforcement: If you plan to carry heavier items, line the bag with fabric for added strength and durability.
- Adjust for Different Sizes: Increase the number of starting chains for a larger bag or reduce them for a smaller version. Adjust the length of the handles accordingly.
- Creative Applique Use: You can sew the bat and moon appliques onto other projects, like pillow covers, sweaters, or Halloween garlands.
- Use Multiple Yarn Types: Experiment with different textures by using cotton or wool yarn, which can give a sturdier or softer feel to the bag.
๐งตPattern FAQs
As long as you know how to crochet chains and single crochets, you can make the base of this crochet tote bag.
The answer is yes, the yarn will stretch if you put heavy things in it. If you want the bag to have little to no stretch, you want to create a fabric liner for it.
These crochet appliques are too small to use as coasters, but you can add them as appliques to other things like cup cozies, Halloween garlands, sweaters, and pillows!
