This cute crochet bat bag pattern is perfect for trick-or-treating on Halloween! Plus, you can use this crochet Halloween tote bag all October long.

I love Halloween, and now that I have a child, I get to go trick-or-treating again! I enjoy dressing up and going door-to-door for candy, but I often forget to bring a bag for myself, leading me to encroach on my son's trick-or-treat bag. Not this year! I decided to make my own Crochet Bat Bag Pattern for my candy stash.
The crochet Halloween treat bag pattern is quite simple to make. You start with a chain and work in continuous rounds, so there’s minimal sewing required. The only sewing needed is for attaching the handle and appliques to the bag, similar to my Japanese knot bag crochet pattern!
If you want a versatile fall crochet bag to use throughout the season, check out my sunflower crochet bag pattern after making this crochet bat bag pattern. It’s another low-sew project with great texture and autumn appeal.

✏️ Things To Note:
- Yarn Choice. I used acrylic worsted weight yarn for the bag, but any yarn type can work.
- Adjusting Size. To make the bag bigger, start with more beginning chains.
- Bag and Handle Dimensions. The finished bag measures roughly 12 inches (excluding handles). You can extend the handles for a shoulder strap by adding more rows, similar to my crochet orange bag pattern.

Assembly:
Lay out the appliques as seen in the photo and sew to the front of the crochet bat bag. After everything is sewn together where you would like it, you can sew on the tote bag handles to the top.
Weave in any ends and the crochet bat bag pattern is finished! Optionally you can add fabric liner by laying the bag over 2 layers of fabric, cutting out a slightly bigger rectangle (allow for seam allowance) and then either hand sew, or machine sew the fabric rectangles together. Then sew the liner to the top of the crochet trick or treat bag.

🐌Expert Tips
- Secure Appliques Properly: When attaching appliques, ensure you only stitch through the front panel of the bag to avoid sewing it shut.
- Add Reinforcement: If you plan to carry heavier items, line the bag with fabric for added strength and durability.
- Adjust for Different Sizes: Increase the number of starting chains for a larger bag or reduce them for a smaller version. Adjust the length of the handles accordingly.
- Creative Applique Use: You can sew the bat and moon appliques onto other projects, like pillow covers, sweaters, or Halloween garlands.
- Use Multiple Yarn Types: Experiment with different textures by using cotton or wool yarn, which can give a sturdier or softer feel to the bag.
🧵Pattern FAQs
As long as you know how to crochet chains and single crochets, you can make the base of this crochet tote bag.
The answer is yes, the yarn will stretch if you put heavy things in it. If you want the bag to have little to no stretch, you want to create a fabric liner for it.
These crochet appliques are too small to use as coasters, but you can add them as appliques to other things like cup cozies, Halloween garlands, sweaters, and pillows!
