The half double crochet border is a simple border that any crocheter can do! As long as you know how to crochet a hdc, you can mindlessly whip up this border.

Basic crochet borders are perfect for finishing off your beautiful project - without them your project might look incomplete or less professional. Even if you don't like doing borders, the hdc border is quick, easy and mindless as long as you pay attention to the corners!
If you want to challenge yourself, you can always try making the Crochet Bobble Border Pattern or the Crochet Pom Pom Border, which is one of my personal favorites.
The Double Crochet Border for Beginners pattern and the Single Crochet Border Pattern are also easy borders to make if you want to keep to simple finishes.

🍵Instructions for Half Double Crochet Border Tutorial
The hdc border is made in the round.

Step 1: Join the yarn you want for the border in any stitch. Then ch x1 and make a hdc into the same stitch.
Step 2: Make a hdc stitch in every stitch around the border. Stop when you get to the corner and see step 3.

Step 3: When you get to the corners of a project there are 2 types of corners you can make for the hdc border:
- Adding a border to a granny square: Hdc x2, ch, hdc x2. (This similarly mimics the dc round below)

- Around a solid project (no hole to work in from the previous round - better for rows): Hdc x3.

Continue repeating steps 2 and 3 until the project is complete. Finish the round by making a sl st to the first hdc (not the chain).
Note: If you are making a border around a project with rows, for the raw side edges you will:
- Single crochet - Make a hdc for each row.
- Half double crochet - Make hdc x2 in one row, then hdc in the next. Then repeat.
- Double crochet - Make hdc x2 in each row.
Adjust as necessary for tension.

🐌Expert Tips
- The half double crochet is a perfect beginner stitch, if your project is wrinkling, use less hdc stitches.
- If your project is cupping upwards, especially in the corners, use more hdc stitches.
🧵Pattern FAQs
A half double crochet is a stitch that is in between a single and double crochet in height. You make it like how you are going to make a double crochet but go through all 3 loops to finish off the stitch.
You can add it to anything made in flat panels - blankets, coasters, potholders, the projects are endless! You can swap out the shell border on my Crochet Heart Blanket Pattern for a plain hdc border for a clean and simple finish!
It is to add height so you get the height of the hdc, if you want it to count as a stitch ch x2 and make the first hdc in the next stitch and at the end of the round sl st to the chains.
