Welcome to my latest crochet triangle scarf pattern! This simple yet stylish triangle crochet scarf free pattern is a fun and colorful project that’s perfect for using up your scrap yarn.

    Finished crochet triangle scarf pattern.

If you're familiar with the granny stitch, you'll find this pattern easy to follow, and best of all, you can make each scarf unique by using different yarn leftovers. You can even choose to stick with a specific color scheme or go for a monochromatic look. Just a quick tip: make sure to weave in the tails as you go—otherwise, you’ll end up with a lot of ends to deal with at the end! For my scarf, I chose bright, vibrant colors to give it a cheerful vibe.

If you love this fun and easy scarf, be sure to check out my other crochet patterns for scrap yarn, like the crochet moss stitch scarf pattern and crochet planet and solar system playmat, for even more creative ways to use up your crochet leftover yarn!

    Happy crocheting!

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Choices: This pattern works great with any type of scrap yarn you have lying around. You can mix and match different colors or stick with a single color for a more cohesive look. The choice is yours! JUst keep the yarn weight the same.
    2. Granny Stitch: If you're familiar with the granny stitch, you'll breeze through this pattern. It's a quick and easy stitch that gives your scarf texture and charm. The granny stitch is made by making 3 dc stitches in spaces made from the previous row.
    3. Perfect for Beginners: If you're new to crochet, this is an ideal pattern to practice your skills, especially if you’ve mastered basic stitches like the granny stitch.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Scrap yarn
    • 5.5mm crochet hook
    • Tapestry needle

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Chain (ch)
    • Double crochet (dc)
    • Slip stitch (sl st)

    🧋Variations

    • Play with Colors: The beauty of using scrap yarn is the endless color possibilities! You can make a: Rainbow Scarf: Use every color of the rainbow for a bold, colorful look. Ombre Effect: Gradually transition from one color to another for a subtle, yet stunning gradient. Monochromatic: Stick to shades of one color for a more elegant and cohesive design.
    • Add Fringe: For a little extra flair, add some fringe to the bottom of your triangle scarf. It’s an easy way to elevate the look and make it more bohemian. I add fringe to a lot of my scarves, like my crochet star stitch scarf pattern and my crochet houndstooth scarf pattern.
    • Bigger or Smaller Scarf: Adjust the size of your triangle by adding or removing rows to create a larger shawl or a smaller scarf depending on your preference. This also makes it more versatile for different seasons or occasions.
    • Stitch Variation: try the crochet granny spike stitch for a fun variant of the classic crochet granny cluster stitch.

🍵Instructions for Crochet Triangle Scarf Pattern

How to crochet the triangle scarf or shawl pattern.

Starting chain circle for the triangle scarf pattern.

Foundation: Ch x5, join with sl st to make a circle.

Finished first round of granny stitches.

Row 1: Ch x4 (counts as dc + ch)

Dc x3, ch x3, dc x3, ch x1, dc x1. Then ch x4 and turn.

I switch my colors every row by pulling up a new color when going through the last 2 loops on the hook from making a dc.

Second round of granny crochet stitches.

See instructions below for round 2.

Close up of multiple rows of the crochet granny stitch triangle scarf.

See instructions below for round 3 and beyond.

Row 2: Dc x3 into the ch x1 space from the row below (its between the dc and dc x3).

Then dc x3, ch x3, dc x3 into the ch x3 space from the row below.

Then dc x3, ch x1 then make another dc into the ch space from the row below.

You do not need to make ch x1 between the clusters of dc stitches unless you are at the ends of the triangle scarf. You can if you want as that is how some people make granny stitches, but it is not necessary.

Switch yarn colors, then ch x4 and turn.

Row 3: Dc x3 into the ch x1 space.

Then dc x3 into the gap between the last rows dc stitch clusters.

Then dc x3, ch x3, dc x3 into the ch x3 space from the row below.

Dc x3 in the next space.

Then dc x3, ch x1, and a dc in the last chain space from the row below.

Switch yarn colors, then ch x4 and turn.

Repeat Row 3 until the shawl is desired size.

Tie off, and weave in all loose ends.

I hope you’ve enjoyed making this fun and colorful crochet triangle scarf! It's the perfect way to use up your scrap yarn and create a unique accessory that’s as stylish as it is cozy.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Color Placement: If you're using scrap yarn and want a more deliberate color scheme, lay out your yarn choices before starting. Try arranging them in the order you want to use and take photos to reference while you crochet to maintain consistency throughout.
    • Consistent Tension: Keeping your tension even throughout the project is key to making your scarf look professional. If you find yourself tightening or loosening your stitches as you go, try taking breaks or using a stitch marker to maintain a steady rhythm.
    • Choose the Right Yarn Weight: For a lightweight and drapey scarf, go for a sport or DK weight yarn. If you prefer a cozier, more structured feel, opt for worsted weight yarn. Just remember to adjust your hook size accordingly to match your chosen yarn.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

Can I make this scarf larger or smaller?

Yes, you can! To make the scarf larger, simply add more rows to the triangle until it reaches your desired size. For a smaller scarf, reduce the number of rows or stitches you add.

Can I use this pattern for a shawl?

Absolutely! You can make a larger version by using thicker yarn or increasing the size of the triangle. This pattern can easily be adapted into a crochet triangle shawl pattern by adding more rows and adjusting the stitch count.

What’s the best way to weave in ends as I go?

To avoid a pile of tails at the end, I recommend weaving in the ends as you change colors or finish a yarn section. Simply use a yarn needle to sew the yarn tails into the back of your work, following the natural stitch pattern to make them less noticeable.
