Hat Body
This part of the hat is made in the round.
Round 1: Turn the work horizontally, then join the white yarn to the top edge of the ribbing. Hdc in the top of the first row. Then continue making hdc stitches for the rest of the round. Make sure you do 1 hdc per row you made in the ribbing (80).
At the end of the round, sl st to the first hdc and switch the yarn color to red. You don't have to fasten off the white, just make sure you drop the yarn and don't carry it through the round. You can pick it back up when it comes to the start of the next round.
Round 2: Ch 1, hdc and repeat for the rest of the round, join with a slip stitch (80 sts). Then switch the yarn color to white.
Round 3-15: Repeat row 2 alternating colors every round between red and white (80)
Round 16: Make sc decreases for the entire round (40). Do not switch colors at the end. Then join with a sl st to the first dec.
Round 17: Make sc decreases for the entire round (20). Then join with a sl st to the first dec. Fasten off the yarn leaving a long tail. With the needle and yarn, weave in between the decreases in the last round and pull the top closed.

🐌Expert Tips
- Choose the Right Yarn: For a soft, cozy feel, choose a yarn that’s comfortable against the skin. A medium-weight yarn, such as worsted weight, works great for this pattern. If you want extra warmth, look for yarn with a blend of wool and acrylic.
- Fit and Size: If you're unsure about the size of your hat, it’s always a good idea to try it on as you go. Crochet is stretchy, so you can adjust the height of the hat or add an extra round of increases if needed to fit your head comfortably.
- Tension Matters: If you're new to crochet, be mindful of your tension. Make sure your stitches aren't too tight, as this can make the hat too small and stiff. On the other hand, overly loose stitches can make the hat too big or floppy. Find a happy medium that creates a smooth fabric.
🧵Pattern FAQs
To create a striped beanie, simply change colors between rounds. When you reach the end of a round, finish your stitch with the new color. You can use a standing stitch or join with a slip stitch to start a new color.
To make your color changes seamless, make sure you are joining the new color at the end of the round, pulling the yarn tightly to avoid gaps. You can also use the "slip stitch join" method to join the new color at the beginning of the next round, then continue crocheting as normal.
Stripes generally won’t affect the fit of your beanie unless the yarns you are using vary in thickness. If you use the same yarn type and thickness for each color, the fit will remain consistent. Just make sure your tension is even to ensure the beanie maintains its shape.
