✏️ Things To Note:
- Ribbing Texture: The single crochet back loop only (sc blo) ribbing creates a stretchy, textured band that fits snugly around your head. Make sure to keep your tension even when working in the back loop to maintain a uniform ribbed effect.
- Moss Stitch Variation: The moss stitch in this pattern alternates between chains and single crochets in the chain spaces (ch-1 sp). This gives the hat its beautiful texture. Pay close attention to the chain spaces and ensure you’re placing your single crochet in the correct spots to keep the pattern consistent.
- Working in the Round: The hat is worked in continuous rounds, so there’s no need to join at the end of each round. Just be mindful of your stitch count to avoid any gaps or extra stitches forming as you go.

🧋Variations
- Yarn Choice: This pattern works well with both solid and variegated yarns. Variegated yarn can create a fun, unique effect in the moss stitch, but keep in mind that some color transitions may not be as visible due to the nature of the stitch. Choose yarn that complements the texture you want to achieve.
- Custom Fit: If you'd like a looser or tighter fit, you can adjust the number of rows in the ribbing section or the body of the hat. Adding or removing a few rows of moss stitch can help achieve the perfect fit for your head size.
🍵Instructions for Crochet Moss Stitch Hat Pattern
This is for a medium sized adult hat. The ribbing measures 21 inches when slightly tugged.
Ribbing
This part of the hat is made in rows.
Row 1: WITH THE 5MM HOOK - Ch x9, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc for the rest of the row (8). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 2: Sc in the back loop of each st (8). Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 3-80: Repeat Row 2 until you have 80 rows in total.
Use more or less if your tension is too tight or loose. You want to have a 21-22 inch ribbed part when slightly tugged at.
Join the first and last rows with slip stitches to form a loop. Turn the piece right side out, leaving the slip stitches on the inside.
Hat Body
This part of the hat is made in a continuous round to avoid any noticeable joins.
Round 1: Turn the work horizontally, then WITH THE 5.5MM HOOK join the variegated yarn to the top edge of the ribbing.
Sc in the top of the first row, ch 1, skip the next row, sc in the 3rd row. Continue this moss stitch pattern across the entire ribbing section, join to the first ch gap with a sc. (80 stitch total - 40 sc/40ch).
Round 2-25: Ch 1, sc in the ch space repeat around to work a round of moss stitch (80 sts).
You want your stitches to be just as stretchy as the ribbing, if it feels tight, you need to loosen your tension or go up another crochet hook size.
If you want a slouchy beanie you will need more rows.
For the final row, sc in every 2nd ch-1 space instead of every ch-1 space. Do not chain in between the sc.
Finishing
Cinch the top closed using a needle or hook, and optionally attach a pompom.

🐌Expert Tips
- Keep Your Tension Consistent: Since the moss stitch involves both chain-1 spaces and single crochets, it's important to maintain an even tension throughout the project. If your stitches are too tight, your hat may be too small, and if they’re too loose, it could lead to gaps in the fabric. Aim for a firm yet flexible tension to achieve the best texture.
- Use Stitch Markers: As you’re working in the round, it can be easy to lose track of your starting point. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round, especially if you're not using a join at the end of each round. This will help you keep track of your stitch count and avoid any accidental twists in your hat.
- Check Your Stitch Count Regularly: It's a good habit to count your stitches every few rows, especially when you’re first starting the hat. Ensuring your stitch count is accurate throughout will keep your hat's shape consistent, and help you avoid having too many or too few stitches as you work.
🧵Pattern FAQs
This pattern is designed for an adult size medium. However, it’s easy to adjust the fit by modifying the number of rows in the ribbing or the body of the hat. You can also try adding or removing stitches to fit different head sizes.
The pattern works best with worsted weight yarn (medium weight, 4). You can use a solid color for a classic look or a variegated yarn to add some fun color variation, as shown in the pattern. Choose a yarn that has a good amount of stretch for a comfortable fit.
To check the fit, measure the circumference of the ribbing around your head (or the intended recipient’s head) to ensure it matches the desired size. If you need a looser or tighter fit, adjust the number of rows in the ribbing or the body of the hat to customize it.
