If you're looking for a fun and easy project to work on, why not try making my Crochet Lemon Pattern? Whether you want to create a cute accessory or add some fruity decor to your home, this crochet lemon pattern is perfect for beginners and experienced crocheters alike.

3 finished crochet lemons on a table.

Making a crochet lemon plush is a great crochet idea for beginners. It's relatively easy to make and takes less than an hour. It’s also simpler to replicate familiar objects, like lemons, and transform them into amigurumi food since we have a general idea of how the outcome should look other amigurumi patterns I've made that are great for beginners are my crochet clam pattern, my crochet smore pattern and my crochet poptart pattern. Both use rows, or easy rounds to complete the simple shapes.

As with some complicated crochet projects, you just have to trust the process. Your project may not resemble anything until the final stretch—especially if there are many pieces that need to be sewn together, like my crochet croissant pattern.

    ✏️ Things to Note:

    1. Yarn Choice: I used acrylic yarn for this crochet lemon pattern You can also use cotton and even chunky yarn for the pattern if you want to make a giant lemon. I would stay away from wool unless you are okay with it shrinking after washing.
    2. Basic Stitches: The base of the pattern only calls for single crochet (sc). Nothing fancy as far as other stitches go, so if you can single crochet, you can make this crochet lemon pattern! If you want to make the leaf, there are a few extra stitches involved, such as chains, Half Double Crochet (hdc), Double Crochet (dc), and Treble Crochet (tr). Making amigurumi or crocheted stuffed toys is actually quite simple!
    3. Tight Stitches: If you have trouble keeping your stitches tight, try yarning under instead of yarning over during a single crochet. This creates a naturally tighter stitch. It might take some time to adjust to this method, but many amigurumi enthusiasts recommend yarning under.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • A small ball of lemon yellow yarn from Red Heart
    • A smidge of spring green yarn from Red Heart
    • Polyfill
    • H hook (5mm)
    • Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
    • Black yarn is optional (if you want to make a face for the lemon)

💭 Abbreviations to Remember (US Terms):

    • Magic ring (mr)
    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Increase (inc) - 2 stitches in the same stitch
    • Chains (ch)
    • Decrease (dec) - 1 stitch combining 2 stitches
    • Half Double Crochet (hdc)

    🧋 Variations

I like to add a sour face to the lemons for personality. To create a sour face, take black yarn and a tapestry needle to embroider eyes like this: > < on one side. Additionally, you can add a mouth in between the eyes like this: ^ to further express a sour, displeased face.

Now you have cute little lemons! Use these in a crochet food playset or make a bunch and fill a clear vase for display in your kitchen or living room.

🍵 Instructions for Crochet Lemon Pattern

For the crochet lemon pattern, we will mostly be working in rounds.

    Lemon Pattern:

Start of the crochet lemon amigurumi.

Round 1: Using yellow yarn, make a mr and sc x6 into the circle. If you find it difficult to make a mr you can ch x2 and then sc x6 into the second chain from the hook (6).

    Round 2: Sc x6 (6).

Round 3: Inc in every sc (12).

Round 4: Inc, sc. Then repeat until end of round (18).

Round 5: Inc, sc x2. Then repeat until end of round (24).

Round 6: Inc, sc x3. Then repeat until end of round (30).

    Round 7-17: Sc x30 (30).

Round 18: Dec, sc x3. Then repeat until the end of round (24). Start to stuff the lemon.

Round 19: Dec, sc x2. Then repeat until the end of round (18).

Round 20: Dec, sc. Then repeat until the end of round (12).

Round 21: Dec, and repeat until the end of round (6).

Round 22: Sc x6 (6). Fasten off and sew the lemon shut.

Turn sideways to admire your lemon.

    Leaf Pattern:

    Crochet lemon leaf on table.

With the green yarn, ch x6.

In the second chain from the hook make a sl st. Then sc, hdc, sc, sl st. Ch x1 and turn to the other side of the unworked chain. Sl st, sc, hdc, sc, sl st. Then fasten off the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.

You can make 1-2 of these and sew it to one end of the lemon.

And now you have a crochet lemon! I hope you enjoyed making the amigurumi lemon!

    Add a face, if desired.

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Invisible Decrease: If your stitches are not tight when doing the decrease and large holes appear, try an invisible decrease. To do this, insert your hook into the front loops of the first and second stitches you are decreasing. Then yarn over like a normal sc. Pull the yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook. Finally, yarn over once more and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.
    • Choosing Yarn Colors: Experiment with different shades of yellow and green to create variations of your lemon and leaf. This can give your plush a unique character!
    • Personalize Your Lemon: Don’t hesitate to add embellishments like a cute smile or rosy cheeks using embroidery or felt. Personal touches can make your crochet lemon even more charming!
    • Practice with Different Textures: If you’re feeling adventurous, try using textured yarn for a different look and feel. Boucle or chenille yarn can give your lemon a fun, fluffy appearance.

    🧵 Pattern FAQs

Do I need to know how to make a magic ring?

Nope! While I use a magic ring, I understand it can be tricky. Instead, you can create a slip knot, chain 2, and use the second chain from the hook as your "ring" to begin making your stitches inside.

    What is crochet?

Crochet is the process and result of using yarn and a hook to make a textile. The textile can then be turned into clothes, blankets, or toys!

    Is crocheting easier than knitting?

To each their own on this one! I prefer crocheting because it's only 1 needle versus 2, and it has a hook at one end which helps the stitches stay on and not fall off.
