Make a crochet tulip using my Crochet Tulip Pattern to brighten up someone's day! Crochet flowers are so cute and perfect for gifting!

    Finished crochet tulips.

I love tulips, and where I live, we even have a spring festival for them! The Tulip Festival brings many people to my state, and for good reasonโ€”it looks like something straight out of the Netherlands, with fields and fields of tulips, minus a few windmills.

I have always associated tulips with spring, and since they are some of my favorite flowers, I decided to crochet one! My crochet tulip pattern can create beautiful crochet tulips that would be super cute for selling at markets or just handing out to people.

Imagine sneaking a crocheted tulip into a real tulip bouquet and saying, โ€œI love you until the last one dies.โ€ Insert sobbing here. It's so romantic, cheesy, and I just love that kind of stuff.

If you want to make a lot of tulips for people, I recommend my tiny crochet tulip keychain pattern.

Now that I have enticed you to make a tulip or two, let's get started making my crochet tulip pattern!

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Flower Size: My crochet tulip pattern has a fairly large flower top, but you can easily make it smaller by adjusting the width of the rows to your preference. This is a super easy customizable pattern.
    2. Yarn Type: I used worsted weight yarn for the crochet tulip pattern, but any type of yarn works! Just know that if you use size 5 yarn or larger, the flower will also increase in size.
    3. Bendy Stem Option: If you want the stem to be bendy, you can include wire, a bendable hair curler, or a pipe cleaner in the stem.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Light Raspberry pink yarn from Red Heart
    • Lemon yellow yarn from Red Heart
    • Medium thyme yarn - Red Heart
    • Tapestry needle
    • 4.5mm hook
    • Polyfill

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring - mr
    • Single crochet - sc
    • Increase - inc
    • Chain - ch
    • Decrease - dec
    • Half Double Crochet - hdc
    • Double Crochet - dc

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

Customizable Design: This pattern is highly customizable. You can adjust the width and height of the tulips.

Color Options: Choose different colors to match your style or occasion.

Stem Options: Decide whether to crochet the stem. For a thinner and simpler stem:

    • Wire Method: Insert wire through the tulip's middle and wrap and glue yarn around it.
    • Secure the Wire: Ensure the wire is secured from inside the tulip flower.

    ๐ŸตInstructions for Crochet Tulip Flower

The flower part of the crochet tulip pattern is made in rounds.

Start of tulip round for the petal bulb.

Round 1: Using the yarn you want the petals to be made out of, make a mr and then make sc x6 in the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x6 in the second chain from the hook. (6)

Round 2: Inc in every sc. (12)

Round 3: Inc, sc. Then repeat until end of round (18)

Round 4: Inc, sc x2, inc. Then repeat until end of round (24)

    Finished crochet tulip base.

Round 5: Inc, sc x3, inc. Then repeat until end of round (30).

If you are doing a wrapped stem vs crocheted stem I would stop increasing here and do 10 rounds of 30, then finish the flower as instructed.

Round 6: Inc, sc x4, inc. Then repeat until end of round (36).

Round 7: Inc, sc x5. Then repeat until end of round (42)

Round 8-20: Sc in every stitch. (42) At the end, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Showing how to close up the tulip/

You want to stuff the flower with polyfill, then with your needle and long yarn tail sew the top of the tulip shut by forming it into a square (for mental referencing) then insert your hook into a stitch on each top side of the square so you have a diamond formed from the sewing, then pulltight to close the tulip.

    Sewing the tulip closed.

    Sewn tulip top closed.

Then sew the top sections of the tulip closed so no polyfill can escape and you are done. I wanted my tulip to look a bit more closed, so I sewed  through the 4 ends of the tulip tips and pulled them closer together.

    Finished crochet tulip leaf.

    Crochet Leaves:

The leaves are made in rounds, but start off as a chain at first.

Round 1: Ch x31 and turn your work.

Round 2: In the second chain from the hook make a sc. Then in the following chains, make: sc x2, hdc x5, dc x14, hdc x5, sc x3. Proceed to ch x2 and then switch to the other side of the leaf and repeat the same stitch sequence. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

You will need to make 2 of these leaves.

    Crochet Stem:

The stem is made in rounds and is also optional, depending on if you want to crochet a stem, or wrap yarn around a wire.

    Start of crochet tulip stem.

Round 1: Make a mr and then sc x8 into the circle. Pull tight. (8)

Round 2-6: Make a sc in each stitch. (8) If you havenโ€™t done so yet, now is a good time to flip the stem the correct way, so the right side is on the outside because it gets more difficult as the stem gets longer.

    Finished crochet tulip stem.

    Round 7: Dec, sc x2, dec, sc x2 (6).

Round 8-38: Sc in every stitch (6). Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

    Finishing:

Stuff the stem, and sew the stem to the tulip petals. Then sew the leaves to the tulip stem near the bottom or bottom half of the stem at least.

And now you have a crocheted tulip flower made from my crochet tulip pattern!

    Finished crochet tulip.

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Avoiding Droop: If you stuff the stem with polyfill, the stem will be soft and the flower may droop. To prevent this, stuff the stem tightly or insert a supporting wire in the middle for added strength.
    • Customizing the Height: If you want a shorter tulip, simply reduce the number of increase rounds or use fewer stitches in the first few rounds.
    • Color Combinations: Experiment with different color combinations for the petals and leaves to create unique variations.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

Can I use chunky yarn for this project?

Of course! It will just be an extra large tulip then.

How can I change the width of the tulip?

If you want a skinnier tulip, you can go down a few increase rounds, so instead of going to 42, you stop increasing at 36 or 30.

Is the crochet tulip beginner friendly?

Absolutely! If you are having issues with the stem you can always just wire wrap it, and you can omit the leaves if that is too hard for you too. Very customizable to skill level.
