If you're looking for a fun, fast, and adorably squishy sea creature to crochet, you're going to love this crochet squid pattern! This little guy is the perfect project whether you’re making a full ocean crew or just want a cute desk buddy.

    Finished crochet squid pattern.

My crochet squid pattern is beginner-friendly, works up super quickly, and—best of all—it’s almost completely no-sew! Just a quick stitch to close the top triangles of the squid’s head, and that's it! That’s right: no sewing required for the tentacles.

Once the body is finished, you simply attach your yarn to the bottom and crochet the tentacles directly on. It’s a satisfying pattern with minimal finishing work, which is one reason it’s become one of my favorites. I designed this amigurumi squid pattern using worsted weight yarn, but it’s super versatile. Want a jumbo squid plushie? Try it with bulky or blanket yarn! Looking for a tiny crochet squid keychain to clip on your bag? Go with DK yarn or even crochet thread to create the cutest little squid keychain you’ve ever seen.

This pattern is great on its own, or you can make it part of your sea-themed collection. If you enjoy this pattern, you might also love my crochet crab pattern and crochet turtle coaster pattern.

Ready to dive in? Grab your hook, pick your yarn, and let’s bring this charming little squid to life—no sewing needles required (almost)!

    ✏️ Things To Note:

    1. This is a low-sew pattern! The only sewing required for the crochet squid pattern is at the top of the squid’s head to close the triangle flaps. That’s it! The tentacles are crocheted directly onto the body—no sewing needed there.
    2. Skill Level: The crochet squid pattern is beginner-friendly, with some experience in amigurumi recommended. To make the crochet squid pattern you should know basic stitches like magic ring, single crochet, increases, and decreases. A simpler amigurumi to get started with is my crochet clam pattern.
    3. Yarn Weight: The crochet squid pattern is written using worsted weight yarn, but it’s super flexible. Use bulky yarn for a big cuddly squid, or fine yarn (like DK or crochet thread) for a tiny crochet squid keychain. Perfect as a keychain for my crochet orca bag pattern or crochet whale shark bag pattern.
    4. Hook Size: Adjust your hook size according to your yarn. The general rule: go smaller than the recommended size on the yarn label to get a tight, stuffed look.

    🪡 Materials Needed

    • Any worsted weight yarn, roughly a quarter skein or so.
    • 4.5mm hook
    • Polyfill
    • 12mm safety eyes
    • Tapestry needle

    💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Chains (ch)
    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Half double crochet (hdc)
    • Increase (inc)
    • Slip stitch (sl st)

    * If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

    🧋Variations

    • Color: For a more realistic look, try classic squid tones like light gray, soft pink, or beige. Want something more playful? For creative color ideas try pastels, neon shades, or even rainbow stripes. Or if you're going for a deep-sea aesthetic, dark blues, purples, or black yarn paired with glow-in-the-dark accents can give your amigurumi squid pattern a mysterious, otherworldly vibe.
    • Tentacles: You can also play with the length and style of the tentacles to add extra personality. Vary the lengths of the tentacles for a fun, quirky look, or, if you love adding detail, sew on tiny beads or felt suckers.

    🍵Instructions for Crochet Squid Pattern

For this crochet squid pattern, we will be working in the round.

Crocheting the top of the squid.
Finishing the triangle top of the squid.

Round 1: Make a mr and make sc x3 in the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x3 in the second chain from the hook. (3)

Round 2: Sc inc in every sc. (6)

Round 3: Inc, sc. Then repeat until the end of round (9).

Round 4: Inc, sc x2. Then repeat until the end of round (12).

Round 5: Inc, sc x3. Then repeat until the end of round (15).

Round 6: Inc, sc x4. Then repeat until the end of round (18).

Round 7: Inc, sc x5. Then repeat until the end of round (21).

Round 8: Inc, sc x6. Then repeat until the end of round (24).

Round 9: Inc, sc x7. Then repeat until the end of round (27).

Round 10: Inc, sc x8. Then repeat until the end of round (30).

Round 11: Skip 6 stitches and then sc x9. Repeat for the other side of the round (18).

    Adding eyes.
Finished head and body of the squid.

Round 12: Inc, sc x2. Then repeat until the end of round (24).

Round 13: Sc in every stitch (24).

Round 14: Inc, sc x3. Then repeat until the end of round (30).

Round 15: Sc in every stitch (30).

Round 16: Inc, sc x4. Then repeat until the end of round (36).

Round 17-19: Sc in every stitch (36). You want to add the safety eyes between rounds 17 and 18 about 5 stitches apart.

Round 20: Dec, sc x4. Then repeat for the rest of the round (30).

Round 21: Dec, sc x3. Then repeat for the rest of the round (24).

Round 22: Dec, sc x2. Then repeat for the rest of the round (18). Begin to stuff the squid if you haven't started already,

Round 23: Dec, sc. Then repeat for the rest of the round (12).

Round 24: Dec, then repeat for the rest of the round (6). Fasten off the yarn and sew the end closed.

    Bottom of the squid.
    Adding tentacles to the squid.

    Tentacles:

Flip your work over and work the tentacles into the last 2-3 rounds of the pattern. There are 2 types of tentacles - long straight ones in the middle and then 6 curly ones on the outside of the other 2.

    Longer Tentacles:

You will make 2 of these arms in round 1 or round 2 or the bottom of the squid (the center of the bottom of the squid)

Join your yarn into a stitch and ch x22. Make 4 hdc into the second ch from the hook. Sl st into the rest of the chain length. Then sl st back to the middle of the bottom of the squid, secure the yarn and fasten off. Weave in any ends.

The second long tentacle will be made across from this one between rounds 1 and 2.

    Smaller Tentacles:

These are made between rounds 2 and 3 and are equally dispersed around the round.

Join your yarn like you did previously, then ch x19. In the second ch from the hook make a hdc inc, then hdc in the next 2 stitches. Make a sc inc in the following stitch, and a sc in the next. Repeat making a sc inc, sc x1 for the rest of the chain length. It will curl. In the last ch make a sl st and then secure it to the base of the squid. Fasten off and weave in the tail.

    Repeat 5 more times.

    Finished crochet squid pattern.

Sew the little triangles of the squid closed if the stuffing is popping out, and now your squid is done!

    🐌Expert Tips

    • Tension is key! For a clean, plush look in your amigurumi squid pattern, aim for tight, even stitches so the stuffing doesn’t peek through. If your fabric feels too loose, go down a hook size.
    • Stuff with care. Use small amounts of stuffing and shape as you go, especially near the top of the squid’s head. Overstuffing can make the triangle flaps harder to sew closed neatly.
    • Use a stitch marker. Since the crochet squid pattern is worked in the round, marking the first stitch of each round helps you stay on track and avoid counting errors.
    • Tentacle tip: When attaching yarn to make the tentacles, pull through with a slip stitch and chain right from the base—it’s quick and keeps the tentacles well-anchored with no sewing required.

    🧵Pattern FAQs

Is the crochet squid pattern pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! This crochet squid pattern is great for advanced beginners and up. As long as you're comfortable with the magic ring, single crochet, increases, and decreases, you'll be good to go.

Is there any sewing involved in the crochet squid pattern?

Just a tiny bit! You'll only need to sew the triangle flaps at the top of the squid's head to close it up. The tentacles are crocheted directly onto the body—no sewing required for those!

What kind of yarn should I use for the crochet squid pattern?

The pattern is written with worsted weight yarn, but it's very flexible! Use bulky yarn for a large plushie, DK yarn or crochet thread for a tiny crochet squid keychain, or mix it up for fun effects.
