    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Yarn Choice: For the snowflake granny square crochet pattern, opt for worsted acrylic weight for the yarn or any other worsted weight yarn.
    2. Hook Size: Use the recommended hook size for your yarn to achieve the right tension and gauge. This will help your coaster lay flat and maintain its shape.
    3. Stitch Tension: Keep your tension consistent throughout the snowflake granny square crochet pattern. If your stitches are too tight or too loose, it can affect the overall appearance of the snowflake granny square.
    4. Blocking: After finishing the snowflake granny square crochet pattern, consider blocking it to help it lay flat and enhance the final shape. This step is especially helpful for intricate designs like snowflakes.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • Red Heart Yarn - white
    • Red Heart Yarn - delft blue
    • Red Heart Yarn - light blue
    • 5mm hook
    • Tapestry needle

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Magic ring (mr)
    • Chains (ch)
    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Half double crochet (hdc)
    • Double crochet (dc)
    • Slip stitch (sl st)
    • Increase (inc) - mostly seen as dc inc (2 dc in 1 stitch)
    • Back loop only (blo)
    • Front loop only (flo)

    * The ch x2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Skip over it and sl st to the first dc you made.

    * If you see a stitch abbreviation with "x" after it, it means how many times you do that stitch in the following amount of stitches. For example: sc x6 would mean you make a single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Inc x2 means you make an inc in the next 2 stitches.

    ๐Ÿง‹Variations

Different Yarn Colors: Experiment with various color combinations to match your decor or holiday theme. You could use pastels for a soft winter look or bold colors for a vibrant pop.

๐ŸตInstructions for Snowflake Granny Square Crochet Pattern

For this snowflake granny square crochet pattern, we will be working in rounds.

Second round of the snowflake is done.

Round 1: With the white yarn make a mr and ch x2 in it (does not count as a stitch). Then dc x12 into the mr and sl st to the first dc in the round (12).

Round 2: Ch x2 and dc inc in every stitch. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (24).

Make sure you have exactly 24 stitches.

Going through the front loop only on the third round of the crochet snowflake.

Round 3: In flo, make a *Sc, hdc, and then in the next stitch (dc + ch x4 +dc). In the following stitch make a hdc*.

Finished 3rd round of the crochet snowflake.

Repeat this sequence for the rest of the round.

The last stitch you need to make for this round is a hdc, then sl st to the first sc in the round.

Starting the fourth round of the crochet snowflake.

Round 4: Sc in the first 2 stitches. *Then in the chain space from round 3, make a sc and ch x6. Next, make a sl st in the first ch that you made after the sc (like a picot stitch).

Now you are going to crochet back in the chain space from round 3, by making a hdc and than a dc.

Starting the fourth round of the crochet snowflake.
    Finished crochet snowflake.

Next ch x6 and in the 5th chain from the hook, make a sl st.

After, ch x5 and in the 5th chain from the hook, make a sl st. Do this last step 1 more time.

Finally, slip stitch into the first chain you made in the initial chain of 6 (after the dc). You should now have 3 loops at the top of the dc you made previously.

Make a dc and a hdc in the chain space from the last round. You are now working down the other side of the snowflake spike.

Then ch x6 and make a sl st in the 6th ch (the one made after the hdc.)

Next, make 1 more sc in the chain space, then sc in the next 5 stitches before you get to the next ch space from round 3.*

*Repeat for the rest of the round. After the last snowflake spike, sc in the next 3 stitches and then fasten off and weave in any ends.

    Granny Square:

Time to make the granny square for the snowflake granny square crochet pattern!

Reverse side of the crochet snowflake, pointing out the back loops from the 3rd round.

Round 1: Flip the snowflake over and using either the light blue or delft, join the yarn into the back loops of the 3rd round, preferably near the start and end of the third round.

Crocheting with blue yarn in the 3rd rounds back loop only.

Ch x2, dc inc, dc for the entire round (36). Then sl st to the 1st dc in the round.

Finished squaring out the crochet granny square.

Round 2: Ch x2, dc inc + ch + dc inc in the following stitch. This is the first corner.

Make a hdc in the next 2 stitches, then a sc in the next 4 stitches, follow that with hdc stitches in the next 2 stitches and then finally make the corner stitch again (dc inc, ch x1, dc inc).  The only place where you'll have multiple stitches is in the corner.

Now repeat the above 3 more times. After the last hdc in the round, sl st to the first dc of the round. (48 stitches with 4 chain spaces)

Backside of the finished crochet snowflake granny square.

Round 3: Ch x2, then dc in the next stitch. When you get to the chain space in the corner make a dc inc + ch x2 + dc inc. Then dc the side of the square (12 per side without the corners). Repeat 3 more times for the rest of the round.

Once you make the last dc in the round, sl st to the first dc.

Frontside of the finished crochet snowflake granny square.

Round 4-6: Repeat round 3 by creating a dc in every stitch and a dc inc + ch x2 + dc inc for the corners. When you get done with round 6, fasten off the yarn and weave in any ends.

After your snowflake and granny square are completed, tack down the ends of the snowflake to the granny square so it lays flat.

And there you have itโ€”the beautiful snowflake granny square crochet pattern is all finished!

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Block Your Squares: Blocking helps even out the edges and shapes of your squares, giving your blanket a polished finish. Use steam or wet blocking methods, depending on your yarn type.
    • Plan Your Layout: Before sewing or joining, lay out your squares to find a pleasing arrangement. You can mix and match colors or create patterns to suit your style.
    • Add Borders for Cohesion: A border around the entire blanket can tie everything together. Consider a simple single crochet or a decorative bobble stitch to finish it off.
    • Enjoy the Process: Remember to have fun! Crochet at your own pace and enjoy the rhythm of making each square. Your blanket will come together beautifully in time.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

How many granny squares do I need for a blanket?

The number of squares you need depends on the size of the blanket you want. The snowflake granny square is about 8 inches, so calculate the total area of your blanket and divide by the size of your squares.

How do I ensure my squares are uniform in size?

Keep your tension consistent and use the same crochet hook size throughout. If you notice variation, practice a bit more to get comfortable with your stitches.

What is the best way to join the squares?

You can use several methods to join squares, such as whip stitch, slip stitch, or the join-as-you-go method. Each has its advantages, so choose one that you find easiest.
